  1. Brandt didn't blow the final five game. It's been a bit since I watched the(packed away) but I can think of at least two goals that there wasn't much he could've done anything about. Most importantly the game winner.

Don't forget about the goal where Greene turned the puck over to Vanek deep in the Sioux defensive end. I don't exactly chalk that goal up to Brandt.

The Coyotes are expected to announce the signing of University of Minnesota junior defenseman Keith Ballard today, according to people within the organization.

Ballard, who could not be reached for comment, was one of 10 finalists for this past season's Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top Division I hockey player.

The Coyotes acquired Ballard's rights from the Colorado Avalanche on March 9 in the trade that also brought defenseman Derek Morris to Phoenix for center Chris Gratton, defenseman Ossi Vaananen and a second-round draft pick in 2005.

Ballard (5 feet 11, 200 pounds), from Baudette, Minn., notched 11 goals and 25 assists in 37 games in his junior season at Minnesota.

He recently helped the U.S. team earn a bronze medal at the IIHF World Championships.

  3. I was in Nebraska on business this week and I was able to attend the Tri-City playoff game last night and watch Spirko play. He is definitely a fast skater and a good playmaker. I think he's going to be a great addition if he comes next year.

I know that the correct pronunciation of his last name is supposed to be "Speer-o" with the K silent, but the announcer at their home arena pronounces it "Speer-ko".

  4. I'd love to see a Sioux sweep this weekend, but I really see a split coming. That wouldn't be the end of the world, as I think Wisconsin could easily take 2 points from Duluth at home the next weekend. Then with a Sioux sweep of Tech, we'd have the #1 spot, correct?

If we end up tied in the standings with Duluth, do we share the McNaughton, or would the tie-breakers decide the champion? I thought we won a share of the title with Minnesota a few years back.

  5. According to this guy who wrote to INCH, the national title will be decided in Madison on Feb. 6-7:

It's a good thing UND is playing well right now because from what I hear, there is nothing else to do in Grand Forks. However, there are plenty of things going on in Madison, but nothing hotter then our hockey team. As far as I am concerned the NCAA might as well bring the national championship trophy to Madison on Feb. 6th and 7th when UND comes to the Kohl center for perhaps the biggest matchup of the season. And believe me, with 17,000 people in attendance both of those nights, a power outage will be the last of their concerns because the student section is going to be have the place shaking by the end of the night. Go Badgers!

  6. How about a knockoff of that Minnesota "State of Hockey" logo. I was thinking about a sign that that replaces the outline of Minnesota with the outline of North Dakota. A phrase could read "North Dakota - The REAL State of Hockey". Then at the bottom it could say something like "UND - winning NCAA Championships since 1959".

  7. I watched Blake and the Islanders play Boston on Thursday night. The announcers said that Blake is the leading scorer on the team right now. Does anybody know if any former Sioux players have ever led their team in scoring for a season in the NHL?
