  1. I saw via the twitter feed that both Rod Carey AND George Love are gone now?

Anybody have any info on these? Where did they go? Who is replacing them? Anything?

p.s. can't wait for football to start!

  2. I think we are finally starting to "look" like a D1 team. Our starting o-line is 6' 8", 4", 4", 5", 4". and we average 302 lbs.

This could possibly be the biggest line we've had in a LONG time if not ever.

  3. Heard through the grapevine that Danny Freund will be returning to UND to coach. Not sure if it's a GA position or an actual position.

Great news, Freund was a great QB for the sioux and will be great for developing our young QB's

  4. Little known fact....the bubble screen is an audible called at the line by the qb based on the alignment of the defense. Have we gotten away from it...YES! did it work before? Yes. Do we have the playmakers to work it again? Yes, look at hardin/mcgill. Not the coaches call, but the QB reading the defense and putting the offense in the best stuation to win.

While the coaches put us in difficult situations many times this year you can't put ALL the blame ont he coaches. The QB's know they have this option ANY time they want it, they just don't use it enough.

This simple bubble screen spreads the defense out which in turn opens up our run game for Murray/Sutton/Miller....

As for qb's who can't complete passes downfield, these are simple passes that will prevent defense from putting 7 or 8 people in the box to stop the run.

  5. Your right UNDershirt. Welcome to the Board.

But I wouldn't expect them to run the bubble screen four times in a row. I was tired of watching it back then, but found myself wishing they used it a lot more this year especially with our seemingly inaccurate passers.

For what its worth, one of the plays was the "long run of the day." He gets a little more leeway. ;)

As much as I may be unhappy with Mussman, I wouldn't fire him this year. He is learning and had a lot of things going against him.

  6. I think we have a lot of young talent. It started to show around the end of the year with some of the younger players getting more involved. After taking a look at the season statistics here are my thoughts on next years positions.

QB: Need to find a suitable replacement for Jake Landry. Is it Goska? I don't think so, running QB's are a nice substitue to have but not full time starters. Hendrickson? Maybe. has a strong arm and appears to be very athletic. Needs to work on accuracy. A freshman? No clue. We will find out after spring ball. May need to look at bringing in a juco QB, sooner than later. Combined Goska and Hendrickson had a completion percentage of around 44%.

RB: In my opinion our strongest position. Murray, Sutton, and Miller. All three averaged over 5 yards per carry.

WR: Hardin is a major threat. Very difficult for him this year with the lack of another suitable option, whether it's a possesion receiver or another big play threat. RJ McGill started to get more involved near the end of the season, good to see him have more success at that point. Only 1 other returning WR had a catch, Anderson. I would expect Townsend and Heimler to add some depth. I'm actually not to worried abou tthis position if we can get a QB to deliver them the ball.

TE: who knows. It appears we don't use TE much anymore. It will be interesting to see how the young guys fit into our offense.

OL: PLeasently surprised by how this group played all year long. Other than the first game of the year I thought they provided our QB's with an ample amount of time in the pass game and opened holes for our RB, as evident by the 5+ yards per carry average.

DL: It's going to hurt loosing boyle but I think we will have replacements to step in. Benjamin will have to fill his role, he saw a lot of playing time this year however. Brenneman is a stud. Who is our other D end going to be?

LB: Inside it looks like we have a couple players in goertz and that kid from cali(can't remember his name right now). Hendrickson is a beast and will be our STUD on defense. Outside we've lost a couple players in kasowski and cochran but I think we have a couple really athletic players in bennet and andrews. I've also heard good things about that cordero finley.

CB: LIked what I saw in the athletic ability of our young corners. We need them to step up and make more plays for this defense. Not sure what happened to Kenny Watkins, haven't heard much about him. Is he still on the team?

Safety: Big loss with ankenbauer and schwenzfier leaving. Belotti got a lot of playing time hopefully he is able to step into one of those roles, probably strong safety, but who is going to play the free position? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that stands out. Merserou(spelling)?

Special teams: Surprisingly this was our concern going into this season. But ended up being one of our strongest teams, and kept is close in some games. The punter is excellent and our kicker impressed me for a freshman(almost hitting a 58 yard field goal!)

I'm excited for spring ball already after this season.

    Go Sioux

  7. Final game of the season. Based on previous years I would love to pick the sioux so I'm going to in a tight game.

Gotta get the run game going, and establish some sort of passing game to keep the D honest.

    27-24 SIOUX

    GO SIOUX!

  8. Sioux Football Insider Jacks Preview

    UND's key on offense....

I agree that we need to get Hardin involved as much as possible. I also agree that McGill seems to be finally understanding the offense more and is getting more involved, wish we would have saved him this year but thats neither here or now.

One thing that I totally agree with in the preview is that we need to throw some wrinkles, or "trick" plays in this game. I know they aren't the most statistically safe play but they are game changers when they happen.

If I were an OC or head coach I would run at least 1 trick play per game, and I would have about 7 or 8 in my play book and rotate them. This forces an opposing defense to spend time working on these "trick" plays and away from stopping our bread and butter during the week leading up to the game.

  9. I would anticipate the Jacks' staff will be smart enough to figure out what everyone here seems to have done: stack the box and make the QB flavor of the day beat you with his arm.

The question for the Sioux staff this week: how do you get an efficient passing game? We know they are capable of hitting the deep ball, but I don't think that is what will win this game. Let's say they do get 7-10 points off hitting on a couple deep passes. I think it will be the ability to convert on the many 3rd and 6+ situations which are likely to be there on Saturday, with an efficient passing game that will be the difference between winning a tight game, and losing by 3 or more scores.

With inefficient or incapable QB's you need to utilize the screen game. The stable of the sioux back in the day used to be the swipe action FB screen. For the last couple of years we've gotten away from that with tibesar at FB, however when it was used it was effective. I specifically remember him catching that and turning up the sidelines multiple times for 15/20 yards. Now that we have a former RB, in solum at FB why not use it again?

Another screen option that has DISAPPEARED was the WR bubble screen. Again the past couple of years, with Trenbeth, Bamba and Konrath we didn't have the "weston" type of player to utilize this play. Now, in my opinion we have two of those types in Hardin and RJ.

Quick, simple passes that stretch the field and keep the defense somewhat honest.

Now I'm not a FB genius, I've coached at many levels however and this is a given technique with QB's who aren't able to accurately and effectively pass the ball down the field. That will allow a little more room for our two best players in Murray and Sutton.

  10. you thing that irks me about the "attitude" of this team.

All their shirts are untucked. it makes us look like a bunch of scrubs and leads me to believe this team is undisciplined.

Would this have gone by when lennon was here? I can tell you for a fact since I played for lennon that it WOULD NOT have. We were required to have our shirts tucked in.

it's not always about looking "cool"
