Since you asked... The NCAA says UND can use its current name and logo. It just can't use them at NCAA-sponsored events and UND can't host any NCAA playoff games as long as it continues to use the nickname and logo. Officially, the NCAA recognizes that UND has no mascot. It has also acknowledged that the logo was designed by an American Indian artist. The Chippewa (Ojibwe) tribes -- enemies of Dakota, Lakota and Nakota tribes -- used the term "Sioux" to collectively describe the members of those three tribes. While it was probably intended to be a derogatory name, Siouan language scholars differ about the origins and meaning of the word. It's been an issue at UND for at least 30 years.

My guess is that you weren't in the intended target audience.
-
Doreen didn't quite get around to mentoning that even though the University of Minnesota has two and a half times the enrollment of UND, it has about 100 fewer American Indian students. You'd think that Gopher logo would really pull them in.

From today's Forum editorial: These two sentences amaze me. I agree with the editorial's basic premise that it's not Jahnke's responsibility to decide when and how the media covers the lawsuit. However, brazenly admitting a vested interest in the outcome of the case and nickname issue is like hanging a huge banner in on the front of the Forum building that says: WE'RE BIASED! The Forum then proceeds to prove Jahnke's point about the media's attempted manipulation of events by running a front-page hit piece on him! Folks, it doesn't get any nuttier than this.

Thanks for posting the correct information. I should learn to read USCHO more carefully before posting.

Or maybe they just have a different agreement.

You can never have too many "The webpage cannot be found" links.

I should mention that Russell has a career record of 2-12 against UND. His record during Hakstol's tenure is 2-4. All four of UND's victories against the Huskies under Hakstol were at Houghton.

I know MTU is better than they've been in recent years, but what have they done this season? They lost to Northern Michigan, a CCHA team picked to finish near the bottom of its conference, and had difficulty beating Lake Superior State, another CCHA team expected to finish near the bottom of the league. They swept MS-Mankato at home, a team the WCHA coaches picked to finish 9th in the league. So while I don't think the Sioux should take the Huskies for granted, I don't think we should be in great fear of them, either.

Does anyone know how owning a large stadium on campus compares to renting the Alerus? I assume that depending on how a new stadium is financed, the cost of ownership could be considerable. And even if the money is raised to fund the construction costs, there are still expenses involved in operating and maintaining such a facility. That makes me wonder whether there would be bankable revenue from ownership.

From the Mining Gazette: Much bigger test awaits with No. 1 N. Dakota

The box scores under "Schedules & Results" at CollegeHocketStats.net provide line charts for both teams. Here's the UND-Northeastern box score. Here's a link to UND's 2007-08 schedule and results page.

I've given the Bison credit -- twice now. Where did I ever say or even imply that I didn't like it? You just repeated what I said Hanson said. Thanks for backing me up. Seriously. Lighten up.

According to Phil Hanson when I listened WDAY, nobody on the Gopher sidelines except the freshman seemed to be into the game. He mentioned how the coaches weren't even talking to the offense when it came off the field. His comments gave the strong impression that neither the coaches nor most of the players were very motivated. That's not to downplay NDSU's impressive accomplishment, but others at the game appear to disagree with your characterization of the Gophers giving it 100 percent.

That's what Finley calls him.

Great job by the women! Now let's keep it going!

Mark the Northeastern game down as one Phil stole for us.
-
Three stars of the game: 3. Brad Miller 2. Chay Genoway 1. Jean-Philippe Lamoureux

Dave Hakstol: Northeastern worked very hard. We dodged a bullet with all the penalties we took. We allowed a hard-working team to gain momentum. We did a good job in the third period. We made some plays and didn't give up a whole lot. We had some good opportunities on the power play. Penalty kill starts in goal and Lamoureux did a good job. We expended a lot of engery last night and coming here and having to kill a lot of penalties took a lot out of us. We had to generate more off the rush and we did that in the third period. Kozek gets it and snaps it home. That's what he can do. It's a skill and ability he has. He didn't get a ton of ice time because of all the power plays and penalty kills. Phil earned the shoutout tonight. Made saves through traffic. Made some saves point-blank. His rebound control is excellent. He did a good job overall and that's the backbone. Northeastern is a solid, hardworking team. Readiness tonight wasn't there. That's the No. 1 thing we need to work on. They had a shot to knock off the No. 1 team in the country. We have to set the bar higher. There will be a heck of a welcome for us in Houghton next weekend. J.P. Lamoureux: This was a hostile environment. Reminds me of playing Bemidji where fans are right in your face. There was a guy with a horn yelling at me the whole night. He said some pretty nasty stuff. I thrive on that. It's about backing each other up. When guys aren't playing well, you back them up. The two goals in the third took the pressure off me. We're fortunate that we only needed one goal. There will be times when we're going to need to battle back. Leaned on my first half of the Michigan game. I battled back and helped the team win. I leaned on my experience from that game. It's all about winning games, no matter how you have to do it. No question that everyone will give us their best shot. Need to show the younger guys what it takes to play for UND. We have to expect teams to try to beat the best team in the country. Michigan Tech is going to be hungry to knock us off in their own barn. We need to get back to practice and refocus.

There's a certain governor.
-
I'll give it a shot.
-
Nice to see some other guys step up when our top scorers are stuggling.
-
Lamoureux is my player of the game.

Being a graduate of Moo U south of the border, I can tell you that they do. I have pictures.

It was nice of you to come back and put some life into the Sioux.
