  1. When Stenehjem said that UND might win the battle but lose the war with the NCAA, I'm sure he was getting some good input about how likely it was that the NCAA would do what it said it was going to do. UND believed all along that the lawsuit was winnable. Stenehjem said yesterday that it was winnable. The NCAA must also have thought there was a good chance we'd win, otherwise I can't see us getting any concessions at all from them. So it became a question of what we would win if we won and what it would mean to the future. Stenehjem believed that we wouldn't be any further ahead than we were before the lawsuit. I think he's right. So I think the emphasis changed to settling the nickname issue once and for all in a reasonable time period without interference from the NCAA. We got that, and it's something that no other school got. And if any of the tribes with resolutions currently supporting Florida State, Central Michigan, Utah, Mississippi College or Catawba change their minds, it's something that they won't get.

  3. Hakstol said on the coaches' show that slow starts were an issue that needed to be corrected. It didn't sound like the Sioux really started playing until the third period.
  4. Remember, Archie Fools Bear said that six of eight districts on the Standing Rock reservation approved of UND's use of the Fighting Sioux nickname. When Fools Bear tried to get the tribal council to support the nickname, His Horse is Thunder wouldn't even allow a vote. That might be a clue. I also believe that there's more support for UND on the Spirit Lake reservation than we've been led to believe. That's one way to look at Myra Pearson's wet-noodle leadership on the issue.
  5. Fortunately, we've been a third period team when we've been allowed to play it.

  7. He should use a baseball bat. Penalty on Duncan, the goon.
  8. Where's Oshie and Duncan this year?
  9. We need to get some rubber on the net. And just after I post that, Kozek scores. 1-1.
  10. Elbowing on Jones.
  11. We can keep the name right now. We just can't display it at any NCAA-sponsored events or host any NCAA tournaments.
  12. Wow. I guess I've been reading real history books rather than watching the Kevin Costner version on the silver screen.
  13. Agreed. Let's wait to see it all before going off the deep end.
  14. My thoughts exactly. His Horse is Thunder and Pearson should welcome this settlement with open arms if what's being reported is true. But he is strangely negative about it. There must be a reason for that. I've said all along that if the only way we can retain the name is through threats and intimidation, then we should change it. Sadly, that is lost on some members of this board.
  15. At least he's consistent.

  17. Yes, because you seem to have no idea how big UND hockey is in the region. Do you think sports fans in South Dakota follow NDSU football more closely than they follow USD and SDSU football? The vast majority don't. In contrast, there are many UND hockey fans in South Dakota who watch the Sioux play over Midcontinent cable simply because it's the only big-time Division I sport in either state. And hockey is growing in popularity in South Dakota. The long-standing hockey rivalry between the Gophers and the Sioux and the competition for players between the programs means that UND hockey has high visibility in Minnesota, a hockey crazy state. Does Bison football have as much visibility in Minnesota year in and year out? I sincerely doubt it. While I agree that hockey is not as great in overall popularity as football, that's actually a disadvantage for football because football fans have so many choices and there's so much competition for their attention. The same is not true of UND hockey.
  18. Those would be some pretty nice lines.
  19. The Gopher-Bison game got lots of attention because it doesn't happen often and it may not happen again for a long, long time. In contrast, UND plays several big-name schools in hockey every single year. People expect it with the Sioux. They don't expect it with the Bison.

I'll second that. It's a fact, not an opinion.

  25. One of the most common reasons for changing the name that I hear on campus is: "We're tired of talking about it." The Forum has a new variation on the theme: "We're tired of reporting on it."
