  1. I never said it couldn't happen. I said it wasn't the only thing that could happen.
  2. Someone just made Mafia Man's day. (Please note that this article comes from a website called TheSpoof.com.) University of North Dakota Changes Team Name
  3. And yet, the president of the University of Minnesota was today quoted in the campus newspaper saying, "We schedule our athletic events years in advance and I know we'll play the University of North Dakota sometime in the next few years in some sports, I'm sure of that. We'll get this issue resolved." Are you sure you know everything you think you do?

Interesting comment in the Minnesota Daily by the University of Minnesota's president:
  5. What I find interesting about MplsBison's argument is that he essentially gives the tribes no credit whatsoever for being able to come to an agreement with the state or UND and then abide by it. He simply assumes that no matter what deal is made, tribal leaders will reverse it at some point and that the tribal courts will allow the tribes to break any contract they sign. He apparently doesn't believe that the tribal governments or justice system are capable of good faith or fair dealing. And UND is supposedly stereotyping American Indians?
  6. If they don't start discussing off-ice sleeping arrangements, I'm going to stop listening to this show.
  7. Florida State should change its nickname right now before the Florida Seminole tribe changes its mind.
  8. No, that's your entire argument, not mine. I'm allowing for the possibility that other things could happen. You're not.
  9. Then why don't you respond to the points I just made rather than the one you think is absurd?
  10. From the Green Mill, Tim Hennessy and Scott Swygman are the hosts with Sioux hockey coach Dave Hakstol. TH: North Dakota is at the Kohl Center this weekend against Wisconsin. The Sioux are coming off a home split with Colorado College last weekend. Wisconsin was dangerously close to being swept at home by Michigan Tech. It
  11. Plus, right now, UND is in better shape than Florida State, Utah, Central Michigan, Catawba or Mississippi College. If any of the tribes that gave those schools approval suddenly rescind it, they'd immediately go back under the NCAA policy. UND has three years, no matter what. I think it's more ridiculous to simply give up without trying to come to an agreement with the tribes than it is to assume that nothing will ever change. It's certainly possible that the current tribal leadership will maintain its entrenched position and that nothing will change. On the other hand, there are indications that the majority of residents on the reservations feel differently than their leaders. What if they exert their influence and force the tribal councils to give approval to UND? What if some sort of long-term contract can be drawn up that gives the tribes a share of profits made from the sale of Fighting Sioux merchandise? There are probably other possibilities that nobody has thought about or considered at this point. Am I saying that there's a good chance any of this will happen? No, I'm not, because I have no idea. But until all the options and possibilities have been discussed and explored, it makes more sense to move ahead and see what develops than it does to assume that there's no possibility of UND and the tribes reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.
  12. I'm shocked.
  13. Implode the Ralph.
  14. Now USD's student newspaper is questioning whether the Coyotes should play UND. The level of disrespect shown toward the logo designed by Bennett Brien, an American Indian and UND graduate, is astounding. In the comments section, be sure to read the well-written response by David Whitesock, a Grand Forks native. Editorial: Coyotes should chastise UND's offensive logo
  15. It must've been for the Spartans' backup goalie, Open Net, because he didn't get too many minutes last season.
  16. I don't know if he started every game, but according to these stats, Jeff Lerg played in every one of Michigan State's 42 games last season.

    Grieco Gone?

Let's face it. The REA is the only arena/stadium/sports venue at which the crowd gets taken out of of the game every single game! It never happens anywhere else but the REA. At every other place in the world, the crowds are always at a constant, deafening roar, no matter what the home team does or doesn't do. Heck, at Michigan Tech when the Huskies are behind 12-0, MacInnes Student Ice Arena is an absolute zoo! At UAA, the worse the Seaswolves play, the louder the fans get. Only at the Ralph are students too busy socializing, chatting on their cell phones or brooding about not being able to swear and stand up to get into the game. Only at the Ralph do old ladies hit people with their purses and old men tell fans to shut up for having the audacity to cheer. Only at the Ralph do the PA announcer, the pep band, the Daktronics scoreboard, bad music played too loudly at the wrong time, security personnel using gestapo tactics, national anthem singers, fans leaving early, fans who know nothing about hockey, beer, Greg Shepherd, Bruce McLeod, Don Adam, Doug Woog, Troy Jutting, Geoff Paukovich, Tom Buning, Pat Sweeney, the Cow Bell Guy, the 2001 Hobey Baker Committee, the locals, the good old boys network and corporate fat-cats in suits and suites conspire to create an impenetrable, morgue-like atmosphere. There's not a thing anyone can do about it. I say tear the place down. It cost way too much. It's too nice. It offends people. Myles Brand doesn't like it. Bison fans don't care about it. Gopher fans call it Mariucci West. Holy Cross will never come back. The Sioux almost aways lose there and haven't won a national championship since they moved in. Ralph should have known it was way too good for us. So, please, regardless of whether the nickname changes, just implode the place. I can't take it anymore.

    Grieco Gone?

I figured that DaveK would've chimed in by now. It's just unnatural that he hasn't. In college, I covered a Black Oak Arkansas concert for the school paper. Interviewing Jim "Dandy" Mangrum and Ruby Star ("Go Jim Dandy! Go Jim Dandy!") was a hoot. My favorite concert incident occurred when I shot photos at Olivia Newton-John's first concert in the U.S. "Let Me Be There" had just begun to climb the charts. She was wearing jeans and a rather billowy blouse. I was kneeling at the edge of the stage shooting pictures when she came right up to where I was while singing. I was focused on her face through the viewfinder when I heard the crowd laugh and cheer. Then I saw her wagging her finger at me. She winked and smiled as she backed away. I had no idea what happened. Later, a friend told me that when Olivia came up to the edge of the stage, her blouse billowed out, and from the audience, it looked as if I was shooting right up her shirt. I had no idea.

Now you're talking an area where I actually have some experience. When I was a professional media jackal, I covered a Styx concert (Paradise Theater tour) and an REO Speedwagon concert. I did a phone interview with Dennis DeYoung and I was supposed to do an after-concert interview with REO Speedwagon, but they they blew it off. So based on that, I'd have to say that Styx is better.
