You know what I find disappointing about the direction the debate here has taken? For years, people on this board have been saying that American Indians have much greater issues to deal with than nicknames and logos. They bring up unemployment, drug abuse, alcoholism, infant mortality, diabetes, teen pregnancy, teen suicide, lack of education, etc. So the minute that UND's nickname and logo are in danger of going away, what do we do? We threaten to take away the very programs put in place at UND that are intended to help American Indians deal with the big problems. So what's that make us?

What the Sioux need right now is a playmaker such as Tony Hrkac or Jeff Panzer.

Spin it any way you desire, but to say that this is something that must suddenly be done at a time when the nickname is in jeopardy smacks of petty vindictiveness, vengeful behavior and an effort to intimidate the tribes into giving UND something it wants. And that's my opinion.

What is this "NA college"? I've worked for UND for more than 15 years and never heard of it until now.

So it's merely a coincidence that the subject is brought up every time someone mentions changing the Fighting Sioux nickname? As I've said before, if the only way UND can keep the nickname is by threatening to take away programs intended to help American Indians, then we don't deserve to have it because it means we're using intimidation to get our way. Maybe that works for some people, but it doesn't work for me.

That's probably true, but I think the reasons for starting the programs were closer to what Sioux-cia stated.

I don't think anyone here is making statements that they believe to be racist. However, threatening to harm a large group of people based on their race simply because their elected leaders are denying us something we want isn't exactly taking the high road, is it? The American Indian programs at UND were created in good faith to serve a worthy purpose. Linking those programs to the Fighting Sioux nickname issue and threatening to remove them if the nickname goes away is like hunting rabbits with ICBMs.
