The New Ralph kids are just reaching "maturity".

Coincidence back to back different gf teams win state titles going undefeated?

Also the number of GGF kids on UND's roster in recent years.  Almost all of them have taken advantage of The Hockey Academy.

A ND school joining a Minnesota league is pretty unlikely.  I still wouldn't be surprised to see a AAA midget team with a big time sponsor or a number of big time sponsors get created.

I recall Karl Goehring and The Hockey Academy at REA floating out the idea of a AAA Midget team in Grand Forks a few years ago and it got a very cold reception.

I think the bigger question is why is the AD budget at NDSU about the same as UND's when UND has 2 very expensive sports in hockey?  NDSU has always been about 3-4 million less in prior years.

You can't compare budgets without including REA.  A lot of athletic department revenue and expense is run through that entity.

How many Grand Forks girls play on boys teams?  Since the twins played on boys teams at youth, there has been a spike in GF girls playing on youth teams.

I think there are a couple playing squirts but I don't believe there are any playing peewees or bantams.

  5. Women's hockey at UND was supposed to be a stimulus for girls youth hockey in Grand Forks.  It hasn't happened.

Grand Forks has a single 10U girls team (there are 6 boys squirt teams), a single 12U team (7 boys peewee teams), and a single 14U team (6 boys bantam).  There is a combined girls high school team in the city with no JV, compared to 2 varsity, 2 JV and a junior gold team for the boys. (FWIW, I think participation on the East side is much better.)

I would like to keep women's hockey.  There are only 3 sports at UND that have a shot at a national title and women's hockey is one of them.  Plus, it produces Olympians.  But it is expensive and times are extremely tough.  It definitely needs to be on the table.

From what I was told, I think that number is high for UM's allotment by a fair amount. Looking at the map early in the process, there appeared to be two or three small sections carved out with pretty much the rest available. My guess is there will be a very limited amount left for the public sale.

You are right.  Minnesota stated over the weekend they received no tickets.  So my info is way off and I deleted my posts.

What happened to SMU in the 80's is why

I think this is way overblown, and I say that as an SMU alum who went there in the 80s.

An institution that is committed to recovering from the death penalty will do so.  SMU was not.  They got a 1 year ban, then gave themselves a 2nd.  When they came back, the administration had put so many restrictions on the program that there was no hope of being competitive.  Many of those restrictions have only recently been lifted.  SMU killed itself.

Sadly, the NCAA keeps its best weapon in mothballs because it's afraid to kill a program.  And the member schools know this.

Our law school sucks. I wouldn't brag about it. They aren't doing so hot on the exams.

On the ND bar exam, UND grads have a pass rate roughly equal to grads of other schools.  The ND bar exam isn't the hardest in the country, but it isn't the easiest either (cough! SD).

  9. A perennial contender in a multi-bid league does not lose its coach to a program like Ohio or Wright State.  When schools in the Summit start competing with schools like Ohio or Wright State for coaching talent, then it can think about becoming a multi-bid league.

Obviously, the same applies to the Big Sky.

Well, I prefer results over philosophical arguments. If NDSU beats UND 9 out of 10 times, then I agree; unfortunately, UND hasn't been able to play NDSU consistently for such DI comparisons to occur. That will now change with this great move. Conversely, if UND consistently beats NDSU in basketball or football, I don't see how your flagship statement can hold any water.

Agreed.  Results trump anything else and I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong.

After all, UND is the flagship university of North Dakota.

I believe that with this move UND has just signaled that when it comes to athletics, NDSU is the flagship.  That's how I see it.

We now have a lot of time to heal, but also get rusty.  Volleyball is all about timing so this long stretch isn't a good thing.  In looking at box scores, one year the Big Sky winner then played a match a week later that was a nonconference match.  Maybe it was a typo.

Denver has a game against Long Beach St next weekend. I bet that is something Pryor looks into next year.

It be kind of neat to contemplate UND attendance with a rated team.  Wichita St, Northern Iowa and even Creighton have had highly rated teams and drew several thousand.  Think UND would max out at 2000 average.

To date, UND is 43rd in average attendance in 2016 at 1,108.  They lead all Big Sky and Summit schools.  But it would be nice to approach 2K and be in the top 25 like the schools you mention.  Would possibly be a big recruiting tool as well.

  14. Recruiting Class signings announced:

Paige Brueggeman 5'10" OH from Eden Prairie, MN

Lydia Rutten 6'1" MH from New York Mills, MN

Ellie Veldman 6'1" S from Prior Lake, MN

Kelly Wahl 6'1" MH from Centerville, MN

With Moser the only senior, I can't imagine there was much scholarship money available for these girls.
