He was a borderline NHL Draft prospect along with guys like Farley and Caggiula that didn't get drafted, and Nanne and Toninato, who did get drafted. If he plays a full year the way he played in the playoffs last sesaon, I bet he gets his name called as a second-year eligible.
The draft has a lot of politics involved too, I might add. No way is Nanne a better player than Murphy or will be a better player in the future because he was drafted.

...I think UND has better everything all around, obviously The Ralph. I think coaching staff now with Berry helping the D out, is better than Portland's too. What won this kids selection is the brainwashing and the NHL grind schedule comparison with the WHL's schedule. We'll see how he develops throughout the WHL. I feel, no question he'll have a huge impact at the World Juniors this year. We shall see...

Nothing to really do with the topic, but Brad posted a list of UND's first rounders the past ten years. Two names stuck out to me. Joe Finley going to the caps at 27, and Brian Lee going to Ottawa at 9.....Not sure those were the greatest first round picks in the history of those organizations. Still can't believe that lee went 9th.....wow.
I know the injury hurt big Joe quite a bit, but hopefully he can get up with the Sabres for a longer stretch next season.
Lee had a lot of hype on him leading up to his draft. While he hasn't lived up to a 9th overall pick so far, he recent play, getting a new opportunity with Tampa Bay, was impressive. He doesn't have a high ceiling on improving too much anymore, however he's def. played in a lot of games in the NHL so far. We'll see how he does with Tampa Bay this year. He had a tough card dealt to him with the Sens, but to the Sens credit, Lee didn't show too much on the table. He's your rarest form of a puck moving D-man, nothing flashy whatsoever, with a less than stellar shot on the blue line. His only role really, is to be a shut down D-men.

Who he is scared of really doesn't matter, either way he will lose playing time (mentioned before). On another note, I get this Saunders is supposed to be good and I hope he is, however, I don't see how Saunders is the "go to" goalie. He may be at some point, but going into the season...no way. He was a non recruited goalie (hence he ended up at UAH), who did play on a (very) crappy team, but I simply don't see how he automatically starts over Dell or Gothberg. Yes, I believe he will get some playing time, but I would think (if Dell does come back) it would be a Dell/Gothberg combo with Saunders getting some PT if Dell or Gothberg struggles. If Dell leaves I see a Gothberg/Saunders combo until Gothberg pulls away. Hak will give Gothberg every chance to succeed.
Sorry, son, they brought in Saunders for a reason. He's a big goalie and he had solid numbers playing on crappy team. The kid can play! If he didn't they wouldn't have told him to come to Nodak. He will be the starter until Gotherberg gains some experience and confidence. Dell is in fact intimated and scared of limited ice, you can't blame him.

Dell is more scared of Sanders than he is of Gothberg. Sanders is the go to goalie next year, until the second half of the season when Gothberg get some experience and proves that he is better and ready for the role.

Agree with most everything you said, but I think Kristo and Knight will both have 50+ seasons, Grimaldi could lead this team in scoring as well. We could see a Nelson/Knight type jump from Parks' and MacMillan in their sophomore seasons as well. I really don't see O'Donnell coming anywhere close to 20 goals, I think he will get around 10 and be around 20-30 points.
Only 10 goals for O'Donnell? He had 5 goals last year in hardly any games, are you serious? Remember, other than Rocco last year, he was our best incoming freshman recruit. He was labeled to play heavy minutes right away. Had more expectations and was given more responsibilities right off the start of the season.
His injuries limited his year and obviously Macmillian and Parks made great strides and took advantage of their opportunities during the year.

Yeah, what are you talking about? I've lived in Minneapolis for over 2 years now, 5 mins from Uptown. Uptown is harmless, with hipsters and a young crowd that enjoys the bar scene. I have yet to be approached by a cocaine dealer in Uptown. Keep in mind, there's some pretty decent (somewhat classy) restaurants now in the area.
I really don't know what you're talking about... In my mind Uptown is safer than downtown Minneapolis, less problems during late night or bar close

Considering UND has had players like Parise, Toews, Oshie, etc. pass on MJ, I think we can hold our own.
Don't leave out Travis Zacjac ever in this list! He is one of the best two-way forwards in the NHL and a huge leveraging name to UND too.

The Target Center has some pretty sweet bars around the venue too. Not as good as the Xcel Energy Center and the bars on Kellogg Street, but still good overall. If you've been to a Twins game at the new stadium, you know what bars, I'm talking about.

Seth handled this decison with class and did it the right way, I will look forward to watching him play in the world juniors next year and as he continues his career I wish him good luck and will probably be a fan of his. The same can not be said of guys like JT Miller, Stefan Matteau, and Miles Koules.
Not to throw Koules under the bus, but I highly doubt you'll ever hear much of him moving forward. He'll get drafted late in the draft this year more than likely. However, he has a huge mountain to climb to ever reaching the NHL. You don't just get demoted on the US team, bolt on your college commitment due to ice time and players coming in and all of sudden make significant strides in CHL and become a likely everyday NHL player. I wish him well.

Bring in Brad Berry as the new assistant coach and lure in Seth Jones, with Brad's ability to development D-man. How can a young kid pass that up?

No disrespect to Eric Fabian, but you don't throw Cary Eades with a tremendous amount of experience and have Eric Fabian be the replacement. You can toss out that suggestion as a replacement out the window. Not going to happen.

Local kid, (Grand Forks Red River) Jacob Benson was drafted in the USHL Futures draft. He had some solid stats on a deep Red River team as a sophomore.

I think that if those 2 would've honored their commitments, the chances of Jones coming here would've been very high than compared to now.
We'll see... think it's time for the coaching staff to not focus too much on recruiting players from the US Development team. Don't get me wrong, they're some great players that go there and develop to become top notch recruits, but over the last few years you've seen way too many of these players de-commit from college thinking the grass is greener on the other side in the WHL. In reality, I've been following recruits for years, tons of players choose the WHL and years later are nowhere near the NHL let alone, making an impact in the NHL.
I think the college student-athelte part gets to these kids too. Now, granted they can take super easy classes at college, but one needs to realize these kids at the development team get things served to them on a silver platter, they all each think they're superstars in their own world when they get the invite to attend and play on the US team. I truly think it comes down to a maturity issue and the character these kids choose to represent at their time there and after, whether it's going and staying true to your word with a college or going to the WHL.
Non Development team related, but there's only been a handful of young kids I've seen growing up that you knew would be superstars.
Toews, Oshie, Zach Parise, Patrick Kane, Cam Fowler too - When I watched him when he was younger I knew he'd be on the fast track to the NHL.

Good luck to him. He really didn't seem to progress much but maybe the USA team didn't use him properly.
I highly doubt the USA team misused him during his time there. He's just not that good and didn't develop. It happens to a lot of younger talented hockey players when they're 15-18.

Maybe Koules saw the writing on the wall that he would probably not have a lot of playing time, either way I'm not gonna wish him a lot of luck when a kid backs out on his commitiment. Maybe UND told him to wait another year to come in or wasn't happy with his progress who knows, either way I don't think we're gonna miss a whole lot on not getting him.
I agree. The Sioux team next year will be totally fine still with talent. More opportunity for Drake and Bryn to come in as freshie's and prove themselves. To their credit, they're both better players than Miles anyways.

My thoughts:
Dan Hammer was pretty boring to listen to on "Midco Sports Network." I had the webcast on and coming back from commercial breaks he and Kober along with production were off every time when the game would resume. As a broadcast, they have to do a better job overall. I hope Dan Hammer, Kober, and Katie O' Keefe(sp) (she was fine) took some notes and regroup for next week. The production of the broadcast needs to get much better! One positive, obviously the power-play and penalty kill game clock (a nice change, we knew midco sports network was going to provide that).
On the Sioux, I mean UND team:
Drake looked good on the top line. He looks like a great skater and has flashes of being a really good player. I was impressed by his play. The RPM (Rowney, Parks, and McMillian) is a force of a line and should be dominate this year. Let's hope Parks injury isn't that bad and he makes a healthy quick return.
Kristo was one of the best player on the ice. No surprise there.
Rocco, is very dynamic with the puck as advertised. I was very impressed by him.
O'Donnell and Rodwell looked rusty, that's expected being out so long with injuries last year. I really wish Derek would have scored, he had a few chances. A goal would have been nice for his confidence.
Our d-corps was god awful tonight. Too many turnovers, sloppy play in the defensive end and not physical enough. It showed that we really need Mac in the lineup for D with his physicality that he brings to the table.
Goalies - Saunders looks real good! I like him. I liked what I saw in Zane, he has a lot of potential, but clearly made some mistakes. I say start with Saunders when the games count at the start of the season.
Bottom line. First game of the year, rusty play was expected, but boy, does Brad Berry have some work to do in the next few weeks with a suppose to be "veteran" d-corps.
