  1. The X is a great place for the final five.  There is obviously much more to do in the Twin Cities than any other WCHA city (except possibly Denver).  It is a destination city.  Does this benefit the Goofs?  Well, yes it does.  Does it make it lopsided in favor of them?  No, it doesn't.  The guys still have to do it on the ice.  Last year at the Final Five Championship the seats were probably 65-35 Gopher-Sioux, and in one of the best games I've seen in a while MN toppled a more skilled UND team.  The fans didn't stop Parise, Murray, Bochenski and Stafford from winning the game, Koalska, Riddle, Ballard, Waibel and Briggs did.  Just like in the Goofs first championship in 2002 when they made an improbable comeback against Maine.  The point of this is that although the fans help, MN had some pretty good teams those years and couldn't have beaten the competition they played if they weren't talented.  The home ice factor is there, but it isn't that significant.

Oh come one Yzerman, that makes a little to much sense . . . All-in-all there will always be an advantage for the gopher hockey program and that is the size/draw of their market. The WCHA is out to make money and that means putting the Gophs in the prime time game regardless of other teams' fate or fairness.

  2. Good grief, Virg.  What's next, comparing Jordan Parise to the Great Wall of China?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Would anyone pay to see the "Ultimate Homer-thon Bout" - Sid and Virg in a boxing match? Or maybe have the Ultimate Homer deadpool?

  3. from all this whinning, you'd think the Gophers win the Broadmoor EVERY year if it is SOOO biased in our favor....

You have to admit that nealry every year the stars align for the Gophs - look at your recent titles. Whether it's hosting the Final 5 and/or the NCAA's, your team gets the late game and has home ice. The disadvantage for the play in teams should only be the extra game and they shouln't be penalized with a second game 14 hours later.

  4. Honestly, I thought Masucko did the color and Woog did the play by play?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Mazsucko does the play-by and Woog is color. I don't mind Woog as I couldn't stand Tom Reid. Now there was a "dynamic duo" . . . I wish the Wooger was still coaching the Gophs . . .

  5. I would like to clear the air on my statement.

Sure it is great having a goalie who is good with the stick to help get the offense moving or perhaps catch opposing team on a "bad" line change.  I have in my 30 years of being in and around hockey seen too many times a goalie get burned trying to attack the puck.  Leave it to the "D" unless you are truly clear to the puck and clearly not being challenged (too closely) by the other squads forwards.

I like the way JPar is playing, as I am sure most on this board do, all I am saying is just don't get burned trying to overextend your position.  That one goal could end the season.

ABTG, do you remember the way Casey would come out? I swear he thought the blue line was the start of his crease . . . I saw him get burned a few times. What a goalie though.

  6. I've been a Sioux/college hockey fan for quite a few years. I haven't followed recruiting much except for the last few years, starting with the ZP saga.

Does anyone have any insight on what attracts mid-to-top level players to their chosen program? Is it the market - which give UM and UW an edge? Is it the facilities - which gives UND, UM and UW an edge? TV contracts? Does it differ between a high school and a USHL player? Thanks.

  7. Hopefully, the Sioux climb out of the spot they're in with the INCH 4X4 NCAA projections. Yikes.

  8. I'm hearing that there is a large group of UMD fans gathering at Senser's in Bloomington all weekend.  Sioux Fans need to show up and take ownership of the joint.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Have you ever been to a UMD game where that Bluto-looking guy is there with the hard hat and the siren? I've seen him at the DECC and the Final 5 a few times. I imagine he's 1) still at UMD going on his 6th (undergraduate) year, 2) still in Duluth asking if you'd like fries with that, 3) is still in St Paul after last year's Final 5 and plans on wearing his siren hat this weekend at Sensors (if he can get a ride there).

  9. My information in previous post comes from the undalumni.org. The servers have been at the REA for the last two years. The person responsible last year left the athletic department and Rudoph was given the responsibility last fall, after UND considered dropping the streamed audio entirely. The alumni people are speculating that someone is not checking/forgetting to start one of the servers.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I sent Mike Rudolph an email asking about the broadcast problem. He promptly replied saying they know of the problem (on their end) and they're trying to fix it. Anyone want to pass the hat for them to upgrade from the Commodore 64 and add a new work study rube?

  10. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that the Thursday winner is going to have to play Friday afternoon.  No wonder why no team has ever won who has to play in the play in game.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree. However, it's all about the $. The Gophs, by far, have the largest market, the home venue and FSN all on their side. Heck, if the Gophs didn't make the Final Five :-) FSN would probably air a "Gopher Classic" Friday night instead of showing another team play.

  11. I'm confident one of you guys will do a better job of turning on that "server" than the one for streaming audo in the REA. :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Too funny. I'll be at Sensors Bloomington on Saturday. Looking forward to finally seeing some green & black instead of that !#%$ maroon and gold.

So I take that it's a 50/50 shot to listen to the broadcasts over the internet? I should consider myself lucky in listening to last year's Friday Final 5 game (on a Mac even) . . .

  12. "I go to Senser's occasionally. From what I've seen it can be spotty to packed with Sioux fans depending on the game. I expect a pretty good crowd for the playoffs with Duluth. And a deciding game will be pretty full, especially if it's a 3rd game on Sunday. I went to the 3rd game against Denver a couple years ago and it was PACKED and LOUD. Really fun atmosphere."

COOL. Besides an annual trip to the Ralph, I haven't seen a Sioux game all year (thanks FSN). I'll have to try at get to Sensors this weekend. Any location better than the other (nearest to Bloomington)?

  13. I'm a recent Sioux transplant in Mpls. I tried to get the braodcast from 96.1 - it started the Windows Media Player but all it did was "buffering" - and I didn't get the broadcast. I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser. Am I missing something?

Also, do many Sioux fans show up for the games at Sensors?
