  1. I could be wrong, but it appears to me that the Sioux have gone from having limited offensive skill on the blue line the past few season to having a wealth of it this season, especially if Kyle Radke plays up to his potential. That's what really excites me about this team.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree with all of you's. The first half of the season will be "interesting" with the young D meshing. I think a 4th or 5th WCHA finish is pretty realistic with some fun shootouts. Hopefully they'll make a final run like last year - and then some!

  2. The legendary Johnny Aasand. Skip of the World. Ice stories are mostly of the curling variety, but they are special. Man of many talents. A line of b.s. that can stretch from Grafton to China. A heart the size of North Dakota.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I swear I can hear John from the Extra End all the way to Mpls if the wind is right. When was Tallackson in Grafton - I don't remember him (I graduated in '89).

  3. Gilbert, AZ.

Yes, Chicago is dirty and nasty, however there are some perks.  As I am heading over to sit in the bleachers for a Cubs-Giants game this evening, eagerly awaiting Greg Maddux's 3000th strikeout.

I will hold out on pheasant season until I come back to ND over Christmas.  Just South of New Salem is where I hunt and it is what I consider the best pheasant hunting land in the world.  (although everyone considers their own to be)

Wrigley and possibly Soldier's Field are the two redeeming Chi Town qualities. Went to Wrigley a few years ago vs the Twins and Denny Hocking hit a lead off HR. My buddy out reached me for it in the bleachers . . . and threw it back. We made Sportscenter that night.

Parshall (SW of Minot) for pheasants for our family.

My grandparents are in Mesa. Went to a great steakhouse in Gilbert a couple of years ago . . . but that's another story

September 10, 2005  ESPNInsider moves to Phoenix

September 12, 2005  ESPNInsider bitches about the extreme heat in Phoenix and wishes he could move back to dirty, stinky Chicago

My condolences, ESPN for living in Chicago.

    Pheasant-tober, October 8 :D for ND and MN residents . . .

  5. Yee hah! Gopher bashing! Being a Sioux fan stuck in Mpls, there are four things I dislike about the local college hockey program:

    1) Dubay (although he does bring college hockey to light)

    2) Wooger and Mozzsucko

    3) Final 5 always in St. Paul with "no home ice advantage" and the 2pm screw over the play-in winner

    4) Arrogance to the other small WCHA schools

    Yada yada yada

I think Denver and CC should be considered "elite" schools. I think UND is still somewhat of an underdog, fighting location, smaller community and the lack of major TV braodcasts such as FSN.

Things in ND - pheasants, ducks, walleyes, Badlands/Medora, richest farming land in the world, minimal traffic jams (except Fargo . . .), great & true people and that girl (I think her name was Melissa) I met at the Rock in GF back in '94 . . . ahhh yes.

  6. Do you think the NBA has always had high tv ratings? I don't think so.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Matter of fact, the 1980 NBA Finals (Lakers vs 76ers) were on tape delay, airing after the 10pm news - in the U. S. of A.

  7. I was thinking the same thing...failure?? The NBA is actually doing quite well for itself. Not sure why a die hard hockey fan would be out calling one of the top sports in the country/world a failure.

The NHL has been outdrawn in attendance by the Arena Football League since, I believe, 2000. The league is no longer playing, and who knows when/if it will come back. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement is up this summer and I for one hope, and think, they will sort it out. The NBA is heads and shoulders above the NHL for fan base.

Another thing, I remember someone posting earlier about how the NBA has it so screwed up with players leaving from high school. Think of how many hockey players are giving up HIGH SCHOOL years to play juniors. I know this is a bit different, but is along the same lines. If you have a better opportunity you should take it. I hope the NBA incorporates the 20+ rule because I hate how teams have to draft these young guys based solely on their potential. These gm's don't want to be the guy that passed up on the next star, so they have to draft these unproven 18 year olds out of high school.

    Just my opinion...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

By failure I meant the stories you routinely hear about the 17 yr old kid passing up a scholarship to be Kobe II, not getting drafted in the first round, not making a team and so on. Yes the NBA is failry healthy, but they need to implement an age rule like the NFL. And yes, of course the NHL is on a severe downturn and obviously much needs to be fixed there as well.

I remember when NBA games were on tape delay and the NHL was far superior . . .

  8. Early departures happen everywhere, but obviously moreso with top programs.  Kessel and Wheeler will likely be one year players. But the one thing that's most troubling for me is that Minnesota's path to the Frozen Four may well be through the Ralph! God Help Us All if we have to witness that in person.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Besides those two, MN doesn't have the talent for any early departures . . .

  9. I enjoyed watching most of these guys "Tony Hrkac, Bob Joyce, Doug Smail, Russ Romaniuk, Ed Belfour, Travis Roche, Mike Commodore, Zach Parise, Brandon Bochenski, Troy Murray, Dave Tippett, James Patrick, Howard Walker, Garry Valk, Landon Wilson, etc" play, but it's not to say that I wouldn't have enjoyed watching them a year or two more in a Sioux sweater.

I just think it's a sad sign of the times when you expect great players to play a college sport a year or two at best. Granted, hockey players are older when they are freshman, but I'd think they'd still benefit by staying three or four years and fulfilling their commitment. That's not reality though, and I wish 'em well.

  10. I agree DAR. It's very disapointing to see him go, but, as we all know, money talks. Hopefully, our favorite sport doesn't go the way of the high school-college basektball-NBA food chain has by disinegrating three or four years in college. I hope the NHL (or whatever it ends up being) sees the light and doesn't let it become another NBA-like failure. I wish him well in his quest, but it would have been nice to see in green and white. Lets pass the hat to keep Greene . . .

  11. What year did you guys graduate?

    1979

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Wow, I suddenly feel so young ;) I remember watching Brouder at the old arena (wearing Cooper-All's I believe). I used to pretend to be him shooting tennis balls at our garage door . . .

  12. Another ex-Spoiler that played for the Sioux was Lee Brodeur.

I hope Supertrex doesn't mind me fielding the question on whether or not he was a Spoiler. Supertrex played hockey until he hit it big as lead singer of the rock group Silver Swan...I believe it was his freshman or sophomore year in high school... therefore he had to put hockey on the backburner. He probably would have been bigger than Freddie Mercury of Queen, but decided to go to UND for an education instead.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

What year did you guys graduate? I'm from '89 (ol timer, I know). Troy Mears was our class' star player. He played Goalie in Gretna for a while.

  13. Yes, Canadians do call it a "box" of beer.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Wow, I feel so out of touch. A box it is. There is a wealth of information on this board . . . I will inform the Rainy Riverans in a few weeks about the "box" so they can catch up with the rest of their country's verbage.

  14. As of September 2004, a 2-4 = case in Rainy River, ON. The last time I was in Winnepeg was about 10 years ago, so the verbage may have changed in that region but has not yet transended into the Rainy River Region. I haven't heard "box" before, but I may be out of touch, eh? ;)

  15. I have to admit I'm not a beer connoisseur, I drink MGD, but $500 even Canadian seems like a lot for beer :D .

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Ok, $500 is a little off ;) A 2-4 of Canadian beer is only a few bucks more than a case of Bud bottles.

  16. Make sure you bring extra cash. What is a case of Blue in Canada? $50?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I think a "2-4" (a case) is about $500 Canadian, but with the exchange rate, it's not much more than a 2-4 of US brewskis.

There is a definite taste difference between the stuff shipped to the states and the domestic, eh, with my preference for the Canadian version.
