  1. The greatest marketeer in the world could not market the image on this canvas.

    Technology-is-a-canvas.jpg

That's what UND is trying to market right now.

Not true, the University of North Dakota is on the canvas.  It isn't blank.

  2. If we don't pick something, something will happen and someone (probably without UND's best interests in mind) will find a less than completely complimentary tag to stick on us. (See: the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers)

I'm sure our wonderfully helpful neighbors to the south are working feverishly to fill the void that'd be open in a "no nickname" world.

New nickname or no nickname, this will happen.

  3. In other places committee members have said that the vote will be made by UND stakeholders rather than the general public.  They just haven't figured out exactly how that is going to happen.  It will probably be the stakeholder groups that were identified by the other committee, so UND staff would probably be added to your list.

I seem to remember the same thing you are saying.  Stakeholders would be the ones that vote on the name but this has me a little worried.

    Clarification from President Kelley

I appreciate the Committee’s question about what is meant—as stated in the Committee’s charter—by a “public” vote on the nickname. I want to clarify that “public” means anyone who wishes to vote on the selection of a new nickname. So, both the public vote and the preceding suggestion period are intended to be open to anyone who wishes to respond.

  4. Saturdays are generally reserved for football. It's the same thing the Big Ten teams are dealing with.

UND didn't have a choice of having all games on FCS.

Every home game will be televised and four road games will be televised.

Maybe more if Fox Rocky Mountain and NESN pick up some games

  5. You're comparing Fox Sports, a broadcasting company that has affiliates throughout the country to a regional sports network? You clearly don't realize the budget differences between the two companies for both equipment and talent. UND hockey is great in our minds but for someone outside of Grand Forks, how appealing is doing UND games? Face it, Grand Forks is a big step down compared to Minneapolis when it comes to sports broadcasting. You're comparing 3 full time employees to a company with dozens.

You say Midco should use Fox Sports North as an example of how to do a production, but who is giving them the time to get anywhere close to that level. Most people here are very quick to just say pull the plug but I guarantee that the production quality has increased since that first game this year. The crew is only going to get better.

Plus, people will get their chance to see Midco's HD feed during the first round of the WCHA playoffs.

Is this still going to happen?

  6. I strongly disagree with your assesment of how this went down. Two teams MN and UW, had ZERO choice in the matter. They were FORCED to leave the WCHA which left the conference with ten teams which is a perfect number. Then teams who DID have a choice like UND and DU decided to bolt from the WCHA to start a new and completely unnecessary conference.

No Big 10 hockey conference, NCHC does not form and the WCHA stays as is. The first "new and completely unnecessary conference" was the Big 10, not the NCHC

  7. Perhaps that's where "player safety" comes into play and the "checked from behind" player should be required to sit for 10 minutes game time to ensure he (or she in the case of certain rodent players) is physically and mentally ok to play. The 10 minute sitdown would only apply to players who laid/thrashed around on the ice for an extended period of time/until the whistle blew.

    10 minute sitdown = standing 8 count

  8. For those of you wanting Hennessy on television: Who would do radio?

Personally, I end up listening to about 40% of all the games on radio*. Hennessy is the best (and I'm talking all levels) and I would have trouble listening to anyone else.

I put Sweeney and Hammer as about equal. Both have strong points and glaring weaknesses. If I want rambling non sequiturs about regional athletes from 30 years ago, sure, Sweeney's the guy. But many seem to forget those problems.

*I'm at about 50% of games and the other 10% is someone else's TV crew.

I watch all the games on TV but listen to Hennessy on iheartradio. I sync up the TV with the radio broadcast by using my DVR. Works great except when I want to replay something.

  10. I didn't notice any color issues, but it was hard to tell with the very poor resolution. It was literally like an average webcam, and I say average because I've seen some pretty high-quality webcams that are costing less than what it costs to get FCS on DirecTV.

The only time in the past that I had a problem reading the numbers on the uniforms was on a webcast. I had trouble reading them saturday on FCS. Overall production was a plus, video quality sucked.

  11. Dave Hakstol - University of North Dakota- "Don is very well respected throughout college hockey. Over the years his officiating style has constantly evolved as changes have come to the way the game is played and he is very well equipped to build a quality staff of officials for the NCHC."

I'm sure Hak was thinking this while he flipped the bird at Adam in 2008. Sure seems like the bar has been set pretty low as far as officiating goes.

  12. You apparently dont understand the difference between home ice advantage and home crowd advantage.

Saying there is a difference between home ice and home crowd is like saying there is a difference between a tax and a fee.

If there is no advantage to playing in the X for minny then why do they bid for the regionals all the time?

  13. Right now I pay $13 a month to get the sports package on Direct TV so I can watch the games on FCS. As I understand it UND gets none of that $13 plus they incur a cost to broadcast the games. I guess I don't have a problem paying only $6 a month to get the webcast and then UND getting all of the $6 as long as they invest the money they save on satellite transmissions to upgrade the web equipment and cameras to hi def. Like Goon said, this is the wave of the future.

  14. Really? A picture of a person in a public place posted on a public forum shouldn't be allowed without their permission? Didn't know it was his family until you said it. Maybe we shouldn't be allowed to talk about someone without their permission either.
