  1. As I've said before, the race is not always to the swift.

This should be viewed as "good news". There won't be the mad rush to change the name to satisfy the Summit in hopes that they ask UND to join.

The landscape is changing. Options will be available.

    Agreed

  2. I'm sorry, but I just don't see how the hockey team playing Minnesota makes the chemistry department more prestigious. I don't know if you're an alumni or not, but the university itself has many other legs to stand on beside who the hockey team plays. If it didn't, maybe it would be time to shut the whole school down, much less the hockey program. Is UND anymore of a prestigious school this year compared to last for having played Texas Tech? Of course not. You think the law school's applications are going increase 5% if we schedule a game against Michigan in the Big House?

UND hockey has reached the point where it doesn't need anyone else, including Gophers in the regular season, to make it successful. The boys in green make their own destiny every year. We are a Division 1 hockey powerhouse! You seem to have the opinion that we are on the same scale in hockey with Minnesota as NDSU, for example, is in football. The Minnesota games are not, nor should they be UND hockey's Super Bowl. If the team plays Fighting Sioux hockey and brings home a national title, are we going to be bouncing our grandkids on our laps lamenting how the title and our degrees mean a little bit less since we only beat the Gophers in the tourney and not in October? When we only play the Gophers twice instead of 4 times, does that somehow diminish the team's accomplishments?

As much as college sports shouldn't be about money and empty suits, it also isn't about the fans. It's about the players and the coaches. The ones that actually put in the hard work, not the ones who go get drunk and swear at little kids during the games. Playing Minnesota and Wisconsin means much more to the fans, myself included, than it does to the players themselves. If you go ask every single player on the team whether they'd rather win a national title or beat the Gophers this weekend, I sure as hell hope they all take the title or else we might as well forfeit the rest of the games. A Big 10 hockey conference would be a bad thing for fans of the rest of the WCHA teams, but it wouldn't impact the Sioux's ability to compete for a national title one bit. As myself and other people have said, it would probably enhance it under the current system.

    Good post.

  3. Wow. That's two now.

Expanding too. Miller is from Georgia (now he graduated) and soon we'll have players from the Southwest US to the NE Canadian provinces.

    Pretty expansive.

UND has to expand with Dean in our back yard at UNO.

  4. Maybe the WCHA should court LSSU and adopt BSU.

    The Natural Rivals could be:

UND-UMD (I like the road trip myself)

    UM-UW

    SCSU-MSU-M

MTU-LSSU (A new rival is born in the UP)

    DU-CC

UAA-BSU (sorry new team draws the short straw)

  5. If the Commish can't find a way to make it work the member schools should hire someone that will or can.

If you need a second for this motion.

    Count me as an aye!

I would rather go to a Sioux vs BSU game over UAA or MTU any day.

IMHO, MTU should join the CCHA!!

Also what will this do to the W/WCHA?? Would BSU drop womens hockey?

  6. I think the one thing missing in this whole equation is what can/will the NCAA do about situations like this. If they cared at all, you would think they would be stepping in to offer suggestions or solutions. It certainly would help Bemidji and other teams plights if the NCAA would extend the # of games each teams can play if they help save a program, as per their allowance for traveling to Alaska. To allow WCHA teams to add games so they don't have to lose traditional rivals would help, but I think the silence speaks volumes of what the NCAA thinks about hockey. On the positive side, there should be an additional spot in the NCAA next year for an at-large team because that league will be gone.

Does the NCAA allow extra games for any team that travels to play teams in Alaska? IMHO, this seems like a no brainer to help

    college hockey grow.

  7. The WCHA committee is in town on Friday for the BREC groundbreaking, meeting and a rally on campus. I would expect a great turnout and obviously, BSU is joyful with the timing and FF.

Hopefully team 12 steps forward and makes it easier. Who knows what conversations are actually occurring between potential schools and the WCHA.

Let's hope they see that letting BSU in the WCHA is a good thing.

  8. I'm not saying this is set in stone, but I have good sources (both from GF and Fargo) that believe that the state tournament will eventually rotate between the REA and UP Center. I'm not sure how many more years the REA has the contract for this, so it still will be a few years off...and I'm sure things could change in that time. Also, not sure if it would be an every other year thing or not. Just reporting what I've been able to find on this subject.

Didn't "Why not Minot" try to have the state tourney moved out west? And an uproar went up about

a 110 million dollar arena in Grand Forks which trumped any idea of moving the state tourney?

IMHO, Blais is good at getting things his way but to have a tourney played at the Plains Center would be crazy.

  9. Something is wrong down there in regards to development. It is odd that a team starts off so well year after year, but tanks as the season goes on.

Long time coach Mike Guentzel leaves and Garth Snow made "off the wall comments".... Just doesn't seem to be all smiles and kittens in

    Maroon and Gold land. :D

  10. I thought I heard the UND AD Faison talking to TH between periods and if I am not mistaken were they talking about the league office and the leadership and the direction the league wants to go. Can the WCHA AD's vote to get rid of the Commish and the head of officials?

Hmmm.. Gino and Jeff Sauer still seem to be hanging around the WCHA... :D

  11. Saccetti gone.....CFB. WOW, I think there needs to be even stiffer penalties for these CFB calls. Getting booted the rest of the game is one thing, maybe they need to be out for the following game as well.

Stoa gone now too....CFB. WOW, what the hell is going on with these guys. :D

  12. FHG26 I think most of us will agree that the refs sucks and they are the cause of a lot of the games getting out of control.

Also, I couldn't believe all of the obstruction that goes on now, it is getting worse by the game. I think the WCHA coaches may have to take issue with the officials in this league. Fans need to email the WCHA and the NCAA as well.

    Agree 100%

  13. As long as everyone who rips Shack was ripping your guy Radke for pounding on that DU guy with his helmet off it's all good.

Bottom line is that a Gopher finally stood up for himself and a teammate. Now if they could just figure out that defense is a six man effort and things will get better.

Radke dropped his gloves at the same time!! I am sure it is on Youtube. Plus the guy was a foot taller!!

No problem with defending your teammate. However the fight was over!! Schack needs to think about his actions

the next level is not going to put up with his crap! Ask Eric Westrum......
