  1. I am traveling alone from Sydney Australia via LA, Denver, Minniapolis and then the Sioux Charter from Grand Forks (if i can get a spot on the charter) but I am very excited about watching my first Sioux game live. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This guy has a great story. He is from Sydney Australia and plays some hockey over there. He apparently is traveling from Sydney to watch the Sioux and has become a Sioux fan. If he can't get on the charter and someone knows of a ride see if we can help him out. We should also try and figure out a way for him to meet some of the players or coaches. Can't say most folks would ahave had the coconuts to do this. The newspaper should track him down.

Aussie fan, keep us updated on your plans if you can. I think most Sioux fans will do our best to help out. Go Sioux.

  2. NDSUFreak10, I am both looking foward to UND and USD joining the GWFC and the game this season against NDSU. Both UND and USD have outstanding programs and will be welcomed additions to the GWFC.

I understand why the state schools are leaving for the Gateway. I think that had they stayed, the GWFC would have been a better conference than the Gateway with the addition of UND and USD and possibly one or two other schools. Give the GWFC time and it will be right back to the top as the number one rated FCS conference.

Take this outside or to a different thread. There a number of conference threads or threads about other schools. This thread is supposed to be about the 2007 FB season. By the way, UND will be good again.

  3. Joe Schiller from Detroit Lakes, 78pts this year, 3rd in state in scoring, led section 8A in scoring, signed with Mankato. He will be a good one for them. He will also be there four years. I predict he will be one of their captains and make the WCHA all-star team at least as a senior. Needs a year in juniors to physically mature. Probably not a sure enough thing for the Sioux, Gophers or Badgers without the year in juniors.

  4. The ladies look spooked.

Good call by both Sioux MD and Walrus. After the first 5-6 min of the game the girls would bring the ball down, get a pass and their first look was to pass to someone else. They had the deer in the headlights look. Same look they had when St. Cloud beat them. They weren't looking to score. We were tentative and that caused us to turn it over. We needed someone who wanted to have the ball in their hands when the going got tough. We also didn't do a good job of getting the ball to Kimbrough. She sat out too much of the first part of the second half. Also in the second half, there were four or five times when Langen was either alone or poorly guarded and no one noticed. She left the open area 10 ft from the bucket to screen out near the 3 pt line. Langen is a force underneath but is a lot slower this year than the last two years. Her opponent blew right by her twice in the second half and she couldn;t get to the loose ball like she used to. I was impressed with the fact that they didn't quit and worked hard. The Bergan kid added spark and I think will be a great point guard. Kimbrough can be one of the best if not the best big kid we have had. Great season. Bad time to have a bad game. Great careers for Mafin and Jahner.

  5. One more reason why corporations and other entities organize in Delaware and Nevada. Org documents can kept from the prying eyes of idiot "reporters". That said, moving it to the foundation still allows contributions to be made w/o directly involving the school. I would still prefer a completely separate fund, organized outside of NoDak to pay the outside attorneys. :glare:

There is no HIPAA violation here. It is no different than if you discuss another person's health status. If you are a health care facility, provider, employee, or have access to that info as an employer etc. it could be viewed as a HIPAA violation. Neither the Forum nor UND have violated the HIPAA law.

  6. A warning concerning the Final Five Poster Scam was recently offered; the responses revealed considerable ignorance concerning its history, which must set straight, as follows:

    1. The scam has appeared more than once since 1996; I have the posters to prove so.

    2. The Gophers were not, in every case, in first place after the regular season; again, I have the posters to prove so.

    3. The Gophers always play in the night game for perfectly logical financial reasons; maximizing revenues is good buisiness practice.

    4. It is most likely that the WCHA has never had anything to do with the scam.

    5. It is also most likely that neither Red Baron nor Xcel management/staff has ever had anything to do with the scam.

    6. It is a fact that one or more of the printer's employees, as well as many of those folks that distributed the poster within the Xcel (on more than one occasion) were involved with the scam. We can only surmise that they were Gopher fans; though probably not Gopher alumni because the vast majority of college educated folks wouldn't be ignorant or thoughtless enough to think making fun of others is a "good or fun" thing to do.

    7. Special recognition to Ski-U-Mah for the comment to the original thread that revealed the most ignorance.

Lastly, it is extremely unlikely that the scam would repeat itself this year as it's history reveals about an every-fifth-year frequency. Sioux fans, however, should be aware that the "big city snobs" that instigated the scam in the past may be resourceful and invent varitions reflecting their need to belittle others. So be on the alert for such "put-downs" and respond accordingly (directly and with passion, but peacefully, without violence).

FOR THOSE OF YOU UNFAMILIAR WITH THE ORIGINAL THREAD, IT IS REPEATED BELOW:

In the past a free poster has been handed out at the entrances to the Xcel Energy Center featuring the WCHA teams participating in the Final Five. The most recent poster scams have exhibited the following flaws:

    1. The University of Minnesota team is shown on the top center of the poster as if it held a "most favorable" standing among the five teams.

    2. The background colors on the poster are predominately the University of Minnesota school colors.

    3. Our team is mis-identified as representing "North Dakota State University".

    4. Upon receiving the poster, many UND fans were also told by the people distributing the posters that they could get the poster autographed at a fictitious room location.

In short, the poster scam reflects a need by the "big city snobs" to demonstrate their intellectual superiority by ridiculing those of us from North Dakota that have come to the Final Five to support our team, our state, and the high quality of hockey to be found in the WCHA.

May I offer the following suggestion concerning the possibility of the scam resurrecting itself once again at one or more locations prior to or following one of the five hockey games at the Xcel:

    1. First, look carefully at the poster to check to see if one or more of the above flaws are evident.

    2. Then, if so, immediately crumple the poster in your hands and drop it onto the floor of the Xcel!

    3. Even if the poster is unbiased, you may wish to consider past transgressions and simply crumple and drop it for good measure!

    4. Perhaps carpeting the interior of the Xcel with crumpled posters will send a message that the snobs can understand...

I will not be responding to any hits on this thread; I've said all that needs to be said; now its up to all of us to respond appropriately when we are ridiculed.

Fighting Sioux Hockey - a tradition of good sportsmanship!

Don't give the custodians the extra work. It isn't their fault.

  7. I think he could use a couple years of jrs and come in 09.

Another kid that has stayed under the radar is Section A leading scorer Joe Schiller. He had 83 points playing for a Detroit Lakes team that had a lot of heart, a decent goalie, a couple of good defensemen. They still tied TRF in the season and took them into overtime in the playoffs. (Schiller had a goal and 4 assists in that game) Their five ft nothing foward who is one of the toughest kids I have ever seen play went from about 10pts his jr yr to over 40 this year playing on his line and , a slightly overweight golfer went form 13 points last year to 50+ points this year playing on Schillers line.

The kid is 6"0" 175 lbs and is just now maturing. He has been on the same elite teams as Marvin, Forney etc and has done well in the fall elite league. He has decent but not great speed but he has great quickness, great hands, and gets you the puck on your stick. He is also very smart. He will need a year of juniors but I think he can play in theWCHA. Mankato has him in this week for a visit but I think UND could get him for a partial and I think he can play in the league. Anyone know if they have looked at him?

  8. I had a meeting this AM with one of Senator Coleman's staff concerning education and the NCLB Act. After other discussion about NCLB, I suggested they consider my idea of changing the drinking age to either age 21 or a person with a HS diploma plus 3 mos. whichever comes first. I suggested it should improve graduation rates without cost to taxpayers. I reminded her we have more problems in this country with binge drinking than those countries which have lower drinking ages and that we are willing to send young men and women age 18 to war. She took notes on other ideas but I noted she didn't write anything down about my idea on changing the age. I think she is a Gopher fan.

  9. I'm not sure why he owned the bar - he did not really impress me a "local bar owner" type of guy. He owned and operated the ice cream store mainly as a place for his kids to work during the summer - at least that is what he was telling me.

This explains everything. The guys just stopped by for an Ice Cream Cone and the spot next door was closed. They heard the same thing you did, that both places had the same owner. They naturally thought that in the winter, you had to go to Judys to get ice cream. That is why they are only charged with minors on the premises. They weren't there for beer, they stopped by for Ice Cream.

So you are trying to tell me now that you can't even get an Ice Cream cone in GF without getting hassled. What is the world coming to?:)?

  10. I don't understand this. Why would one bar be allowed to serve minors, while all others cannot? Some kind of special GF politics?

Judys is the political hub of Grand Forks and the University. They treat it like the UN in New York You get immunity from prosecution as long as you don't do anything egregious.

  11. I'm sure that you are probably joking about calling. But just so those don't know ... no tampering with recruits by boosters.

I wasn't kidding. Friends and guys who were on their team can call or email the kids Dad. Don't call the kid.

  12. Since this is a 2007 Schedule post, does anybody know if there is a game on Sept 1st? I have to get married and my woman is making me do it that weekend. Has anybody heard anything?

That loud noise was the door slamming on your freedom!

  13. Mark and Steve were the two Veldmans who played at UND. Didn't a third play at Moorhead State? If this kid is Mark or Steve's kid, and anyone played on those teams with them in the early 1980's, call those guys and make sure we don't lose this kid to the AC. Tell them if they let their son or nephew go to the AC Gene Murphy will come back and run over them with his scooter and make them do power conditioning until they puke. This kid could make this one of the best recruiting classes in school history.

  14. The Sioux still have good chances I am told on the following...

    Tavorrius Jackson- DB / SS

    Vermillion C.C.

    6' 4" 210# Runs 4.5 Forty

Brother of Brady Jackson Atalanta Falcons

    Others interested Illinois, Wisconsin,Minnesota, UNI

(This young man would be a difference maker)

    Matt Veldman- TE / WR

    Becker County

    6' 7" 220#

His dad Mike Veldman played with Dale Lennon in the 80's , He was one of the best TE / Receivers ever at play at UND.

His son Matt has a boat load of potential and Huge upside...

Others interested Minnesota, NDSU and ??

Lets hope the Sioux can top this class off with these two...

  15. When I got to UND I was told (by my brother) that underage drinking at Judy's was immune from prosecution. My brother, (who is an attorney) just verified that the immunity is still in place. As long as you don't drink and drive, get in fights, or break the long pool cues (when you should be using the short one by the north wall) these charges won't hold up in court.

I have trouble believing a lot of this. PCM is correct, wait until you get the facts. Does anyone really think you could fit 3 hockey players, the first year med students, the three Sigma Chis who still drink beer, Richie, Shorty, Maynard (and his Ulkele), Wes H., the snitch who called the cops, and some wide bottomed cop in Judys at the same time???

I would expect Ryan Bakken to do some investigative reporting and get the truth out. Chuck Haga might come back from the Star Tribune if he hears Judys is under attack by GF's finest. Don't they have anything beter to do? These are college aged kids. Tell them to dump their beer and get the hell out of there. That is how they used to handle it. If they get DUI's prosecute them. If they are UND students they are supposed to go to Judys until you get better ID's or are 21.

On a related topic, when are the politicians going to change the laws so any kid 3 mos beyond receiving his HS diploma can drink beer? Hell, they can die for our freedom. Why not let them drink legally. Maybe somewhere along the line we will admit that even with our higher drinking age we have a bigger problem with binge drinking than virtually any developed country in the world. Change the law to age 21 or 3mo past your HS graduation whichever comes first. Give that idea some thought. It will improve our HS graduation rates at no increased cost to the taxpayers. Also, our hockey players wouldn't be in trouble.

  16. Nothing.

NDSU isn't gaining anything in this.

UND is losing CE, ME, and CE and gaining AE and BE.

They would be taking UND's ME, CE, and EE in order to decrease duplication. That would be a huge gain for them even thought they wouldn't be adding any new programs. What I was expected you to say was NDSU would close their Accounting program, Nursing program, some of their business programs etc. in order to accomplish your goal of decreasing duplication. If you really want to decrease duplication you will need to bring something to the table. Otherwise you are wasting your time.

If you think UND is simply going to close those Engineering programs, and get nothing in return, I think you are losing me. If your idea is that UND should close any programs and send them to NDSU in exchange for an opportunity to develop new fields of study it will not happen. UND already is reviewing a number of new programs and, at times in the past, if not present, have discussed Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering as well as Genetic mapping, Biomedical Engineering etc. I believe most of those programs are expensive, complicated and very dependent on grant dollars and coorporate sponsorship.

The days of Clifford and Loftsgard working together disappeared behind big Joe's ears and ego. We will see how things might change with UND behind someone like Dr. Bruce Smith. He has the charisma and moxy to lead UND and sway the politicians similar to Clifford. There was no one better. Joe Chapman is the best at it since Clifford.

  17. http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=80343

Cal Poly is ranked above UNI in every single I-AA poll, I guess you can keep on touting those alway questionable computer rankings but I'll take the word of a real person over them any day. Also if you truely think UND's schedule was on an equal level with NDSU's :silly::D:lol: they aren't even close.

Who cares, the season is over. Lets just agree NDSU had a tougher schedule.

The AC should consider resuming the rivalry this year because with the graduation of Reed Manke UND will have an unproven QB and doesn't have the dominating defense it had in the past. They would be the prohibitive favorite to win the game and get the nickel back. UND is having one of its better recruiting years according to reports and will have an equal number of scholarships after this year. The game would be in Fargo if they resume the rotation and with all of that in their favor I think Taylor will agree unless they get a great deal from a D1AA or D1 team.

  18. There isn't a post on this thread that you can point to showing me saying that UND engineering is good or bad or that NDSU engineering is good or bad.

I've not made those judgements and will not.

Removing duplicity was the only goal.

I consider starting Aerospace E and Biomedical E programs at the level that the U of MN has to be a fair trade for giving up EE, CE, and ME.

Those are programs UND would consider adding anyway but they need to be programs that are viable. Your posts have been fine I am just commenting that many people do not know that UND has excellent and respected engineering programs. If they were going to move programs to NDSU what would NDSU move to UND in exchange. NDSU also has excellent Engineering and it is a waste of time to start listing all of the fine things the two schools have done in Engineering. You brought up a valid point and I am just interested to know what NDSU would give to UND in order to get what they would love to have in Engineering.

  19. The Human Performance and Fitness major at NDSU increases the performance of human biology. It obviously has nothing to do with Biology, Chemistry, or Medicine.

I was not trying to hurt UND. UND is not known as an engineering school and it would not hurt them to lose the EE, CE, and ME programs. I was only trying to help the NDUS system remove unneeded duplicity.

UND is known as much more than an Engineering School. To the industry leaders, companies and organizations who hire engineers, UND has an excellent reputation. NDSU is not known as an Engineering school anymore than UND is. It is known primarily as an Agricultural College thus the long standing name "the AC" which was used by everyone including the AC grads and students. It wasn't a derogatory term until someone who went to school there decided to be offended.

It has an excellent pharmacy program and because there are not many pharmacy programs in this region it is one of the conerstone programs to your school. I dont' think oyou would want to give that up but if UND was going to give up three strong Engr programs like ME, CE and EE, it would take a trade of that magnitude. Others have outlined the history of the School of Engr and Mines and I think that should put to rest any idea that all Engr should be only at the Land Grant School.

If duplication is really an issue then the first thing to do will be to close the smaller colleges such as Mayville State and Valley City State. You will likely save enough $$ to leave the Engineering programs at both schools intact. If that works well, you can move west to decide which other colleges to close. Unfortunately, it will come down to who has the stongest lobby and political power to influence the legislature.

I think those not familiar with UND's Engineering are under the mistaken impression it isn't very good because you don't know much about it. They should be marketing the programs and publicizing the programs and success of the grads but closing them or moving them is not an option.

  20. Business is a program every college needs to survive.

Engineering is not. Plenty of big time schools without engineering. U Oregon, U Georgia, U Indiana, etc.

How many UND athletes would be without majors if the CE, ME, and EE programs went to NDSU?

    Chem/Geo should stay at UND.

3 of the four Engineering majors in FB, none in hockey according to the media guides. I would guess an additional handful in the other sports (total 10-20 of the 400-500 athletes) but Engineering has been strong at UND so why would they want to move it? There would need to be some give and take.

IF UND is going to have Aerospace or Aeronautical Engineering then keeping Mechanical at UND would make sense. Sending EE and CE to NDSU as the trade for ME and Aerospace might be fair. NDSU doesn't have Chem Engr so it would stay at UND and is not part of the equation.

Business is not a program everyone needs to survive. Once a school has it, I don't think anyone will want to give it up though. Many colleges don't have it. The Accounting program is one that doesn't need to be replicated and UND has been so strong for years it would make no sense to move it away from UND. On the otherhand, the cost of moving it would be minimal which ever way you moved.

I was a CE major at UND and was advised to go there by the head of the states Federal Highway Administration because he felt UND had the better program. It was based on the interaction he had with the professors from the two schools and the interns they had working for the Federal Highway Administration in the summers. I am sure you can find someone who will tell you they prefer NDSU. The point is UND does have an excellent school of engineering. The quality of ME's from UND is excellent and they are highly recruited. I believe the EE program at UND is also very good but I don't have recent info to back that up. I have been told it is excellent at NDSU.
