  1. The "capital planning" portion of his Stanford bio is what catches my eye.

Pop "Ray Purpur" into your favorite search engine and you'll find out what he's been working on.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I believe Purpur is the favorite of Harmeson (thus Kuppy). They seem to want someone who has AD experience. I believe Bollinger is the favorite among many of the former athletes. Bollinger would do a great job. he has been the driving force behind the Fighting Sioux Club which has raised Millions of $$$ for UND Athletics. He is a historian and has done a great job with the Alumni from the pre 70's era. He is very well respected and well liked by those who know him and work with him. He will not be an "admin puke". He is the type of guy that will go sit in the student section to make sure the students are having fun. He will be a coaches and althletes Director. He will encourage Kuppy to figure out that you shouldn't go to Europe etc. when the FB, BB or hockey teams are making National Championship runs. They will encourage Kuppy and Harmeson to get to know the Alumni who are capable of making donations similar to what Ralph has done. He will support the Fighting Sioux name. (he grew up on a reservation). Purpur looks good on paper and may be the best choice, but he would have to be awfully good to be better than Bollinger. Bollinger has the contacts and Purpur doesn't. Purpur will need to start fresh. Ozzie (Dave Ozborn) hasn't been around Sioux sports much lately but was a heck of an athlete for UND and the Mn. Vikings. He is a successful businessman in the citites and out of respect for tradition should at least be granted an interview.

  2. The Koenig rumor regarding his transfer out of UW-Green Bay appears to be more than a rumor this year.  He will likely get his release within the next few days.

Both UND and NDSU are interested in him.  Obviously, he could play right away and play for "something" for the next two years at UND as opposed to sitting out a year at SU.  I have no idea but I would guess that he will end up at one of the ND schools.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

He could also play football and might get an extra year.

  3. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've always been under the impression that there are some people who don't like what the students are doing/saying no matter what.  Whether it is the 50's, 60's, 90's and whether sucks, FU or anything else is being said, some people don't like what the students are doing.  It used to be almost unthinkable that someone said sucks, but students said it in unison. It was thought that saying sucks is completely classless and ignorant.  Now saying sucks isn't that big of a deal.  Am I wrong?  If I'm right, then why is it such a big deal now?  Because the NC$$ taking action on it?  Because media coverage is so much higher than it used to be?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You are right. There are always those who don't understand and maybe can't remember being a student. Sucks maybe isn't the classiest cheer, but I would say it's OK. With a bit of thought and creativity our students have and can do better. I don't like the "Who's he? He sucks s&!t" cheer but that's maybe just me. If the students are not a big part of our cheering section, the games are not as much fun. I once had the chief of campus security sit next to me an entire regional basketball tourney. We had a pretty good time because he had a sense of humor. We hadn't used anything very profane and certainly not vulgar or racist. We just drove some fat bald coach from UNO ( We either called him snackbar or bread truck) nuts and he requested that we be better chaparoned. They also roped off the student section behind the visitors bench and soon after the the NCC prohibited us from sitting behind the opposition.

Now, I need to work on my pass to get me out of the nursing home and up to the Sioux game. I will watch for you signs and have fun. Go Sioux and remember the Bison still suck where ever they are hiding.

  4. I agree that kids will be kids and that the sister thing was way over board.  But let them have some fun.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Thanks to Diggler for correcting my Duke Maryland mistake. You gotta understand that here at the nursing home they put salt peter in the mashed potatoes and we get confused easily. (They started doing that after 4 of us got excited and tipped the trays off of our laps watching reruns of Golden Girls. That Bea Arthur is hot!). I have secured a pass for tonight and Nurse Ratchet and I will attend the game and watch for your sign. I got a chuckle out of it.

Jack, these are not kids. Saying someone sucks is OK. Screaming F--- You at the opposition is ignorant and shows no class. Our fans are smart enough to come up with more clever taunts that that . The Sioux fans have been great over the years and the students have been fun to listen to. If I sat next to someone who made a sexual remark about an opponents 12 year old sister I would wrap my walker around their neck.

  5. Who cares if we are labeled rude fans? Just keep on doing what we are doing. We can't help that we have great fan support and Sioux spirit.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I hate to disagree, but that type of fan support only shows ignorance. The Duke fans were great in the past but that crosses the line. Especially about the guy's sister. The real Duke fans should have tossed the guy out on his butt. I would hope Sioux fans are smart enough to be more creative than to simply yell "F-you JJ or JJ" or (whomever) at either a team or a player. You don't need to be crude and rude you can be insulting and creative. Part of the atmosphere at college athletic events should be the fans.

The signs in the past (by the penalty box) were creative and funny. Where have they been this year? I didn't see any that crossed the proverbial line of decency. Did Kuppy outlaw them or didn't those guys get their seats back? Don't tell me some of you guys are graduating in less than 6 years these days. A lot of us were able to cram our 4 years into at least 7. Sorry I have to cut this short but they feed us at 6 here at the Nursing home.

  6. It's almost not worth it anymore to try to sneak in a flask or something. While 25 years ago, they would've taken it from you and kicked you out of the game, now they'll take it, arrest you, kick you out of the game and invalidate your ID.

That's another thing I'll do when I'm made AD. I'll hand out flasks to the students when they come to games. No flask, no getting into the game.???

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

In the mid 70s if you weren't a jerk, the campus cops would let you sit up in the old Englestad and drink beer as long as you didn't leave a mess and as long as you didn't cause them any trouble. You also had to be discreet but most of us didn't know what that meant. You could cheer and yell insults as long as you didn't swear more than hell, damn, bull$%!# etc. and you had to use a bit of your brainpower so we had to come more innovative cheers than those such as "who's he? He sucks s&!t". We were still able to incite Michigan to attack the crowd once at the old barn and could usually get the attention of the refs and the Minn rodents and their coaches. Bruce Tellman (the ton of gamblers), who owned the Red Pepper, usually could distract the opposition by himself from behind their bench. We didn't worry about arena personel bothering us because we would have tossed them out onto the ice. When Clifford was president UND didn't waste money on the Pol Correct Police but we were smart enough not to cross the line. (most of the time). The AD then was Carl Miller and he was too short to see what was going on on the ice much less in the stands.

  7. I've seen him play. Let's put it in plain comparison: If you don't like Smaby's style, you won't like Dowzak. They are comparable in size. It didn't look like, when I saw him, he moved his feet all that effectively. However, he was (I think) a sophomore at SSM when I saw him play. A LOT can change in time. He sounds like a quality defenseman, but in the NCAA, height can be a blessing and a curse.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The kid can skate and has a wicked shot from the point. He is an excellent athlete and until he concentrated on hockey, was also an outstanding football player. I think either his dad or uncle may have played football for the gophers for awhile. Both his parents are big.

  8. I have every Sioux/Bison game dating back to 1982. Before that there is nothing available in terms of television broadcasts that I'm aware of. I talked to Coach Lennon about that very topic a couple of months ago. I asked him specifically about the 1980 Sioux/Bison game. He doesn't have it and doesn't know of any of his old teammates who have it either. He suggested I contact WDAZ, which I had already tried with no luck. He informed me that the athletic dept. does have old game film, but I believe it was shot with a single camera from the press box. I think it would also most likely be black & white footage if you're going all the way back to the '70s. I also would imagine there is no audio.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

There is an online srevice that offers films including games on the 70's. I checked it about four years ago and they did have a number of UND games from the 70's. I am not sure I still have the card with the info, but I will look for it. If I find it I will post the info.

  9. A letter to football lettermen on the day of a National Semifinal in football, maybe? (A lot of football fans picked that paper up for the UND @ PSU preview.) Because the letter really had nothing new in it, like most of the other stories that week? Because Kupchella had just left on vacation? Because UND had the banner headline the preceding two days and the Forum was going for a trifecta?

What are you thinking as to why? That story was less impactful than the preceding ones in my opinion. That's probably why "Saturday".

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The letter was sent out quite a few days before the day of the semifinal game. It wasn't a bad letter. UND officials and concerned Alumni have been meeting and working on this issue even before the Bisonies made the move. Kupcake does bring out a very valid point and that is the step from DII to DIAA is not such a big step as some wish to believe. It is more expensive and would be a good move for football. The step from DII to the real DI is much bigger and that is why you see our friends from Fargo SDSU and N. Colorado lost when it comes to soccer, VB, BB etc. That is also why the other coaches don't want to make the move. If we can get the NCAA to agree to let DII FB teams move in FB alone it will solve the problem and UND will go. Other wise we need to get out the checkbooks and make it happen.

  10. The interesting thing is that once in awhile, Lennon throws caution to the wind and does something totally against his conservative nature. The primary example was going for 2 and the win at SDSU in 2003. I believe he's also on record as saying he would have done the same thing in the 2003 title game had UND managed to put one in the endzone at the end of the game. I wouldn't have gone for it in this situation against a team like Grand Valley who everybody knew had an outstanding defense, but against Pitt St., I felt that the UND o-line had a distinct advantage over their d-line.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You are exactly right. I usually agree with Lennon and would not trade him for any other head coach. But....This was the time to go for it and try to take control, on the road, offense moving the ball but needing pts, blockers doing a great job, they had not stopped a straight ahead run for no gain. If you were at the game you saw and felt the difference after the punt. I know there are "fans" that would complain if we didn't get the first down, I don't think they were there. Show our offense, especially the line and Rbs in this case, the same confidence we show the defense. Don't try to tell me they don't deserve it.

Maybe someone brought this up and I missed it. In the third quarter we had the ball 2nd and 4 around the Pit 25 yard line with the clock running. We were going into the wind, I think we could have let the clock run out and gotten the wind for the next two plays and the punt, if needed. We passed incomplete twice and then had to punt with .9 sec left in the quarter. Why run even one play into the wind when you don't have to?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    [/quote

I thought I was finished for the year and probably should be but I am at work waiting for others so here it goes.

Couple of thoughts. Turning point may have been in the first half when we were up 7-0 and stopped them on third down. They flagged our dback for phantom headshot (or whatever) and they get the first down and then go in to score. (I am not bitching about the call as much as I think it was a turning point). If they punt there I think it is a very different game. I have not been a Belmore fan but he was OK. Fumble on 25 hurt and missing the wide open TD pass then settling for a field goal hurt but other than that he was OK.

Dale's call wasn't wrong because it is what he usually does and he seems to know what he is doing. I do agree with the Rook though in that I think we need to have an offensive philosophy that we believe no one can stop us for a yard when we need one and we run it right up the old "poop shoot" for a first down. Our linemen are big and talented enough. Wistoff is a hell of a fullback. Someone should have called timeout and told Dale they wanted to go for it. Players used to say give me the ball or run it up my butt and we will open a hole and then make it happen. If I am the Off. Coordinator I would make that my mission to convince Dale and the rest of the staff that we can do that then put the kids in a position to make it happen.

UND92, 96 did a nice summary of who is coming back. I hope they start the three QB's even this spring and let the best kid work his way to the top. I still think Manke is the guy who will win. I also hope they bite the bullet and offer the Mertens kid a full ride. It may be too late though. He is the real deal according to former UND and present area high school coaches. The Gophers should also be on him.

Lastly, if you have good kids in your communities make sure you send their names and info to Dale and for that matter the coaches in other sports.. They likely know about them but you never know. Offer to take the coaches out to lunch when they are on the recruiting trails or have them over for a homecooked meal if they get stuck overnight in your town. I think you would have fun and many of the coaches enjoy meeting Sioux fans. Merry Chritmas.

  11. Kupchella better dust of his resume......The Chancellor will have his head.....

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am not so sure the Chancellor shouldn't be the one to dust off his resume. This was a poor way of handling this whether he was right or not. NDSU officials have a past history of submarining programs from other state institutions uncluding UND. They have a long history of duplicating programs already in place at UND such as the Business, Accounting or Nursing programs (the last time I looked they still didn't have an accredited College of Business). They have duplicate Engineering programs at the two schools some of which are better at UND and some of which are better at NDSU.

Having said that the Chancell0r should be concerned when one of his PhD types at NDSU can't spell Bismarck.

I am concerned that Kuppy got his lunch handed to him on this. Clifford would have eaten Chapmann's barn and crapped the hay. (I am sorry about being vulgar but I wanted our AC cousins to understand).

I would caution all of the folks wearing the cass county jump suits, bib overalls and living in the double wides. Don't piss off the sleeping giant otherwise known as the UND Alumni. The Chancellor would loose his job over that one.

  12. I can't speak for Scott, but I'm guessing that he was putting Chapman and Kupchella in the same boat.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Quick, anyone have a torpedo that can range that boat???

  13. Hey! What is up with this Iramurphy character. He is always taking cheap shots at the solid programs at the cow college. It is quite obvious to me that his lobotomy was a dismal failure and he must be bitter about it. I think that I know who he is, and if it is who I think it is he is about ready for the bone pile. He had better be careful, or as they wheel him off to the old receivers home, it might be in a strait jacket. Go Sioux

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am a resident of the old receivers home already. That is why I have nothing better to do than play with my computer. The only thing solid at the cow college is under the back end of the cow when it is 30 below zero! Go Sioux. Who do the Bisonies play this week? Don't you have some tests to grade?

  14. I seriously doubt that Charles is a guy who "is better than that guy from USD".  Charles has decent speed but I don't think they have high hopes for him as a big  contributor at RB in the future.

I suppose it could be that UND has a commitment from a talented RB transfer who will be here next year.  A current player may have known of the commitment.  I really would have thought we would have heard about a great RB and talented receiver who had transferred in last fall!

Yes, Lueck had to sit out his first year due to issues with the number of transferable credits.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It isn't Charles. I was told the guy transfered from Illinois but I wasn't sure so I didnt' share that. It would be the kid from St. Paul who came as a Dback and was switched to RB. The players comment was that he made them look pretty foolish at times trying to catch him when he played scout team. I don't know about the receiver but this kid who is a plays alot said the receiver was pretty good.

  15. hey poncho here, dont buy into that bogus extended forcast stuff, me and the wife planned a trip to Graceland over that.  It was supposed to be 72 and sunny all week.  We get down there and sirens are going off and we experienced torrential rain fall and hail damage on the winnebago.  Hopefully the weather stays well for this game, we field turf is slipprier then 8 baby pigs flappin in the mud.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That sounds like a date with the NDSU cheerleaders!

  16. Another local kid has gotten some recognition. Kenley Wahlin from Crookston was named all-state as a safety by www.minnesotapreps.com.  I would think UND would be recruiting him as a wide receiver.  He's 6'3" and about 180 pounds with decent speed. Mertens was named all-state at quarterback, not surprisingly.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

One of the Sioux players said there is a transfer running back "better that the guy from USD" who is sitting out this year and a transfer receiver who is about 6'2'' with very good speed who is sitting out this year. The RB is listed in the program as a DB. Can't remember the name but you heard it here first. Hopefully who ever he is, he has his own credit card and isn't sitting out for academic reasons.

  17. Well, its not that we dont have the players on offense, its just that we dont have an experienced coach running the show. We have pretty much the same skill players as last season, only with a year more experience. The one thing that has hurt a lot has been key injuries. The line has lost 3 starters to season ending injuries and Tennessee is playing on one leg. Finnerty has lost most of his confidence and therefore the coach who was conservative to begin with, is now even more conservative. There is a prevailing thought that anytime the offense could emerge and light up the scoreboard, but I dont think Martin's playcalling will even make it possible. Plus, against an awesome defense like UND's, it will be tough. GV's defense has been incredible lately, but how long will they carry the team while the offense looks to find its way?

I have been predicting the Lakers to go down the past 3 weeks so I better keep with the tradition and pray that they keep proving me wrong.

    Sioux 10

    Lakers 3

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

If Belmore plays like he did against USD or Mich Tech, or Bowencamp plays, UND 20, Grand Valley Dairy 10. If Belmore plays like he did against St. Cloud either time or Augie, Grand Valley 17 Sioux 6.

  18. I included this in my post about the weekend hockey series in Madison.  What do you think of the Wisconsin students chanting "Racist Mascot" several times during Saturday's game?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I don't think there is anything racist about calling a team the badgers.

Otherwise it was good thinking. Wisconsin fans have always been the most original. When they won the National title in Grand Forks in 1983, they were drinking our of puddles in the parking lot "like badgers" and announced to the entire section they were stitting in that one of their buddies had passed out and peed himself during the semifinal game. They were also brutal on "Hawvawd". One of the most enjoyable hockey games I have attended with respect to fans was sitting with the Wisconsin fans and listening to their coordinated cheers and jeers.

  19. Isn't it true that Tech's QB is out for the season?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Don't forget that we are also without our QB (unless Bowencamp recovers in time). I assume Dale will continue to play our third best guy (#15) as long as we win. He seems to have trouble playing outside. (poor games against Augie, and St. Cloud twice). Belmore struggled yesterday and our receivers had to make some great plays. Dale mentioned on the post game interview that we had some dropped passes. What game was he watching? We missed a number of open receivers and threw the ball to St. Cloud at least four times but maybe he meant the three drops the St. Cloud Dbacks had against us. They only caught one for an Int.

He has to stick with Belmore for now, but Belmore has got to start hitting the receivers in stride especially on our "bubbles". The one thing he has done well up to now was run when he had a lane. He threw the ball away twice yesterday when he could have run for a first down on third down plays. Our receivers shouldn't have to make great catches on those little flare passes. When they aren't thrown well, it turns a potential 10-15yd gain into a 1-5yd game. Then again maybe I didn't see the game well and I missed the dropped passes Dale refers to.
