Just think if Ralph was still alive I’m pretty sure McKenna would be in Grand Forks
I’m not so sure. McKenna allegedly is getting $700,000 this year.
Ralph was not a fool. What would he then be asked to give other guys on the team? What would that do to team chemistry if other guys don’t get even 1/2 that. A $10,000,000 endowment generates an annual income. Depending on how it’s invested let’s say $500,000 to $700,000 per year. Where does the money come from for everyone else? How long will he stay? Will someone else give more to go somewhere else next year or will he be in NHL next year? It’s the “Wild West” corrupted by greedy agents, an ineffective NCAA, and teenagers who are conflicted by big money, loyalty to teammates, and sometimes family giving poor advice. I would have to believe Ralph would want better odds for his ROI to make it worth while

He played well for us. If he had no academic or legal issues you figure out if he makes us a better FB team. If he does, welcome home, let’s get to work.
As long as the NCAA allows players to have agents, the agents are going to try to convince players to enter the portal.
Is it the scaled down version of free agency?-

Shame they didn’t acknowledge your note. T&P
No big deal. (He is the first DL FB only kid to sign with a conference rival in 34 yrs). As GF hockey said, UND must not have been interested.

You are probably correct.

I hate losing kids to the xDSU’s but it’s even more of a gut punch seeing a kid choose Verm. We gotta start beating these teams on the field.
I sent Duckett an email when he entered the portal with a short summary and a suggestion they take a close look at him. (This first time in over 30yrs that I have been sending a heads up to coaches that someone didn’t acknowledge my note).
He is a close friend of Cariveau and was very interested in UND. I would guess USD gave a scholarship and we didn’t. If UND lost him to USD as a PWO, they either didn’t want him or didn’t try very hard. I know where we could have found NIL dollars that matched or exceeded what USD did.
I would surprised if he doesn’t play for USD this fall, but time will tell. -

I don't think anyone was really expecting him to leave, but good to see it confirmed that Kaminski will be back. We saw in the first half of the season what he can do. Just need to carry it through to January.
Had a big offer. Schmidt did a hell of job to keep him.

But can we get better when the HC endorses what has happened this year by not making any changes. Pretty disappointed in Schmidt - Isaac is gonna Isaac all day long. he learned nothing during the season and seems incapable of making adjustments. The games we piss away next year are on Schmidt.
Of course we can get better, we must.
I’m not sure I have read or heard that Schmidt has “endorsed” anything. I have no idea what Isaac will do, nor what he learned, nor what he will learn between now and next year if he is here.
All results are the ultimate responsibility of the HC. -

Grant Noland and Isaac Cariveau were named to the FCS freshmen All-American team. Didn’t see much on it from UND Football sites.

Yep, but that’s just the coach-to-player communication device. OC (with technically the help of a group of players/back up QB) can signal in a change at anytime, as long as you have enough time to actuate it. Ultimately, the QB should be given full autonomy, but the coaches can have full control also if they want, meaning it’s only partially on the kids. The coaches need to shoulder their fair share of responsibility in the offensive failures. They have the ability to audible into the right call, and as such, UND should be able to score more than what they did.
Many components here: execution, player talent, communication, play-calling, and syncing it all together.
Yup. As many have said, we need to get better.

Maybe, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We did that with the Jerry FB nonsense.
I think there is a good chance they play as true freshman but they will be playing against a lot of men who are bigger and have 2-3 yrs of experience. My hope is for them to develop into guys who get a chance to play Sundays but we need them to excel on Saturday’s first. I think they will. Then we need to keep them here for 4 yrs.-

Unfortunately this also lends itself to the argument that we need a new direction offensively since Fruechte has connected himself to that position.
I know it may sound like these things are not mutually exclusive (in other words we could keep Fruechte as OC and just hire a QB coach) but I believe they are in fact mutually exclusive.
Another issue is that in this day and age audibles out of calls is entirely on the OC/play caller and not on the QB/QB coach. UND’s OC has the ability to run a check with me at the line, seeing what the front and coverage alignment (2 high vs 1 high) will be and then adjust from there. If that is not happening, then it’s on the OC, not the QB. Not to mention the OC is controversially on the field and not in the box where many play callers are located for strategic purposes.
Just my 2 cents. We will see …
OC can change call up to 15sec left on play clock or ball is snapped. After that it’s up to the QB. They need to be quick and they need to be right. I prefer a QB willing to audible out of a bad call.
We also need staff who can recognize when a player shouldn’t be playing.

I would argue Ira asking for my donation dollar figure, just because i expressed an opinion, was the "callous" comment here. If he's going to inquire into my personal donations, I think all should be able to handle my truthful response.
Your second paragraph mirrors what i originally said; that unregulated dollars being thrown around to individuals is a net negative for college sports in general.
Help me out here.
Where did I ask for your donation figure? I don’t care what it is cuz it’s none of my business. What was callous about my comment to what I understood was a question as to the difference in a donation to either UND or one of the NIL initiatives? I responded “The number of zeros in your donation?”. Maybe I’m wrong but I was thinking because NFL players are paid so much more a donation would need to be much larger (more zeros) than a check for our program.
That is only one sentence not a paragraph, much less 2.
What am I missing? -

Should i give the Wilfs donations to help pay Vikings player salaries? Could someone tell me what the difference is?

Throw in a top tier QB too… although I think we’re more likely to get better at QB via HS quarterbacks and development then what we could get from the overpriced transfer portal at QB
We desperately need a QB coach who can develop talent. Jerry regressed as the season went along and finished with 11 interceptions and < 60% completion rate both of which were worse than last year. I would excuse his dismal play against Tarlton cuz he probably shouldn’t have been playing much less kept in the game after it was clear he was struggling.
He has the physical tools as does Sulik. Whichever of the 2 can learn to get through their reads quicker and develop the confidence and leadership skills needed to audible out of poor play calls should be an upgrade over this past year. A QB coach is essential in their development.-

One of the reasons this is getting worse is agents are contacting these players to “represent” them. They are telling kids and players families that they have contacts with coaches and teams at all college levels and can help guide them through the portal and get them money.
I have no faith in the NCAA, but if they wanted to regain some control, they would require players leaving or the schools accepting portal transfers, to reimburse the schools whose players transfer through the portal the cost of that players scholarship (not additional funds or NIL funds unless required by legal contract). Others on this forum have stated same or similar. It can be almost intoxicating for a kid and their families to here how their son/daughter needs an agent and that agent will find them a school that will give them NIL money and better position them to get to the NFL. $50,000- $100,000 is a lot of money but usually not “life changing”. The college degree should be more life changing and few agents discuss it unless the player or parents bring it up
I’m afraid we have more than Rucker and Seidel to be concerned about. Hang on, this ride can get rocky

McNeal: one of the best leaders we’ve had in a long time; bleeds green and is an outstanding young man
Anderson: extremely reliable; played a ton of football for UND and was one of the best graded fcs tackles all season
Lewis: my personal favorite. A home run portal guy who was everywhere on the field and seemed to be the best tackler on the field.
Wiltshire: another absolute home run. He’s the definition of JYD. Will be very hard to replace a guy like him
Martin: really good addition a couple years ago, clearly was playing through pain and gutted it out
Scott: really wish his career didn’t end with an injury
Nate D : really improved this offseason, a leader, and a really good blocker as well
Z: another guy who bleeds green and should have gotten twice as many carries in every game he played this year. Averaged over 7 YPC this year only to get 5 carries in his last game
a lot of other guys not mentioned, but left a mark as hopefully the first building block team for the start of something very special!
Samuels-Parker, Keneth, Terry, Simon and Grant Romfo, Walker, and Neuberger all seniors. I think I also missed a few but all of these guys you listed, and these seniors were part of making us a better team. Some played quite a bit, others pushed the starters to get better. Neuberger, the long snapper should get some NFL tryouts. He had an outstanding career here (which is why most fans don’t know who he is).

The Sather Conundrum

Met him briefly at the gathering in the conference room at Hyslop after he made the announcement about the REA and Eddie brought the Stanley Cup. I don’t believe I could say I knew him.
People I know with that level of wealth don’t tend to make foolish decisions. Most of them have foundations that manage large donations. They prefer to choose recipients of their donations based on preset guidelines. Most don’t like to be approached with specific requests. Engelstad’s relationship with UND was personal and that tends to make difference. You knew him, I didn’t. I’ll defer to you.
