  1. I'm sorry feel free to jump all over me for my typo  :glare:

Anyhow the UND athletic website noted that another candidates is being brought in for a interview.  Anyone know anything about him?

    thoughts?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Word at the Sioux scrimmage Saturday was that the committee gave Kupchella two names and he told them he wanted three.

If they bring in another candiadate, I would think it is the guy from West Point who is an assistant AD there. He is a West Point grad. He was in Columbus at the Frozen Four talking to some key people. Seemed like a nice guy.

Grand Forks folks were also saying Harmeson seems to be hurting Bollinger's chances. That is what I would expect from an administrative type. I would hope he is smart enough to know that the Alumni will remember that and when Kupchella moves on he will be moved out quickly. I would hope Harmeson and those close to him do not continue to say anything about Bollinger that isn't complimentary. Rob is a great guy and would be an excellent AD. If there is someone better they can should hire them. I have no problem if someone prefers another candidate but I would hope they would support their choice based on that person's merits rather than Rob not having AD experience. Being the faculty rep doesn't make Harmeson anymore of an expert than any of the rest of us. Being Kupchella's gopher doesn't make him an expert either. I would wonder if he was ever an athlete or coach. He is entitled to his opinion, but I hope he understands many people are disappointed by what is perceived as undermining Bollinger's chances. Bollinger has excellent experience in some of the key areas especially fundraising and team building. Maybe there is someone better, but Rob is an excellent candidate as well and I think thus far would be the best choice. My opinion is not anymore than that but I have nothing bad to say about the other candidates and Rob qualifies based on his record not what someone else did or didn't do.

  2. Mike Rohde quit he is a quiter, he quit....j franklin is sitting out due to the fact that he is still doing rehab on his surgically repaired shoulder. Mike Rohde QUIT. John bowenkamp has signed a deal with the vikings.. nothing big , undrafted freeagent so good luck to him. I was impressed with anthony long, he will help out the team in many ways. Mike Rohde quit. digger only had like 5 or 6 plays along with alot of other key starters on d-fence so you can really say it was the 1's vs 1's. I hate QB sneaks and QB keeps during a spring scrimage. First its dumb because you can't hit the QB ( Unless you are digger, like he did to belmore, that was funny) and second no one wants to see those plays anyways. To reply to who ever asked about mac schneider and how tall he was when he played....it doesn't matter because he squated over 500+ lbs. He was strong enough. The offensive line has already got its 6 or 7 players that will be the main core players so I think they will be fine next year. The new posters for next years football season is out now. The only problem is that, no where on the poster does it say "2005" the year the sioux will play in. Mike Rohde Quit! I like the group of receivers that we have for next year. congrats to all the d2 players selected in the draft.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

So let me get this straight. Are you saying Rohde quit or what? Is that on the new poster for for 2005?

Someone asked how many werre at the scrimmage. About 1200 fans maybe. Some stayed only for part of the scrimmage and some came late.

Defense looked pretty good. Greenwood had a good scrimmage and a nice pick and made some run stops. Longe had a nice pick on Belmore. Alexander is fast and also covered pretty well.

Belmore missed an open receiver for a TD and seemed a bit frustrated with his poor play in the second half of the scrimmage. Freund isn't ready yet and Carney was OK. Manke moved the team pretty well. Pick on the goal line that he tried to force a bit but other wise scrambled well and had a nice TD pass he laid right on the receivers hands. One of the guys who has been to all of the spring practices and scrimmages says he is playing better than Belmore but it is close. As long as Mussman is there he will need to grow 2 more inches before he gets a break from him. He should come out of spring ball ahead of Belmore. He did last spring and they moved him down to three when Bowencamp got hurt.

A number of receivers made nice catches (3 diving) but on two of the picks they need to knock those down so the DB can't get to the ball. Receivers also blocked well at times. O-line usually gets knocked around in the spring scrimmage but they did pretty well.

Teams looks quicker. RB's had a good day. Overall good depth. Save your frequent flyer miles for Florence if they stay healthy.

  3. A few questions that I had were answered yesterday. First, Jamaal Franklin is apparently still on the team. He was listed as one of the players who was not participating in the game, along with Glas, Trenbeath, Sundby, Hoffelt and Grossman. Second, Duane Wenzel is indeed the backup kicker. He's no Jeff Glas, but he looked like an adequate emergency kicker. Third, my point about Storhaug's lack of height is no longer an issue, since now he's listed in the program as being 6'0" instead of 5'11".  :D

Does anybody know whether Mike Rohde is still around? I didn't see that he got any carries yesterday, although the "other" running back recruit out of Wisconsin, Jordan Armentraut, looked good.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Franklin had surgery on his shoulder.

  4. This is just a question out of the blue, but has anybody seen Danny Freund play this spring?  I think that this guy is the future of the Sioux offense.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

He won't move ahead of either Belmore or Manke. Carney has had a good spring. If Freund continues to develop he will be the QB of the future, but he won't be for a couple of years yet. That is also why Groeschl moved back to wide-out.

  5. Frankly, I think people who are worried about team names/logos and their presumed "effects" on American Indians are missing the point.  Given the rampant poverty, addiction, suicide rates, crime and health problems found on most reservations, and in the inner cities, I really doubt that changing any school's name just to appease a few hypersensitive, hand wringing bed-wetters is going to have any discernible impact on the lives of most Indians.  It would make the academics happy for a few seconds, as well as those whites whose only contact with Indians comes from trips to the casino or reruns of "The Lone Ranger", but I doubt it would impact the crisis facing Indians today.

There was an excellent article in the NY Times yesterday about the unraveling of traditional family units among Indians, and how the tribes and the feds are ill-equipped to deal with the effects of this breakdown.  Perhaps if the name change crowd directed its "intellect" towards more basic issues they might gain a shred of credibility.  However, that would take some thought and serious soul searching, both of which seem to elude these people.  Hell, I'm surprised some "scholar" hasn't blamed the Red Lake shootings on the UND name/logo, yet.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You are right. A couple of observations. This group, however small, really needs to "win one". I think they see this as winable because there are enough politically correct Admin types, politicians, and campus liberals who will feel more comfortable with their evening bong if they jump on this issue. It is easier than getting to the real problems of poverty, education, violence, unemployment etc.

It is near impossible to try to help as an outsider. We often are looked at as the ones who caused the poverty and destruction of culture and Native ways. Maybe you and I didn't but we must understand how many feel. I still think the use of the Fighting Sioux name can be used to help Native Americans. It could be used to bridge cultures. There are many Native Americans who agree and like the idea that the Sioux name is published across the country in a positive manner associated with UND athletics. There are also many narrow minded enough who refuse to see the possibilities because some opposing fan yelled "Sioux suck" or some drunk, rednecked peckerwood showed their ignorance by making racially insensitive remarks. Those people who can't get past their anger seem to be unwilling to have any discussion on how our culture felt this was an honor. They do not see interseted in diversity and I have expressed that point ad nauseum on earlier comments. They have a double standard when it comes to cultures. Ours is not important and they have no respect for what our elders tried to do even though their own elders were wise enough to understand and see the potential for collaboration.

There are also many who have enough self confidence and cultural pride to share their culture with us and see how we can work together to make things better for us and Native Americans. UND should continue to work with them and expand what we can do around the state and region to make a positive difference in the lives of the kids on the reservation, so 50 years from now UND would face litigation if we dared drop the name.

  6. Because of this great forum and site, I think the Sioux fans that encounter you should buy you a beer - I know I will if I see you.

btw, are there really SiouxSports.com sweatshirts? If so, very cool!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am in. I will buy you beer. Will be at the Crowne Plaza and taking my UND daughter. I told her I expect a sign:

    UND Tuition and costs $9000.

    Charter to Columbus $975.

Taking my old Dad to watch the Sioux thrash the Gophers on our way to #8. Priceless.

  7. I'm not sure that I do.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It's what all of us old guys at the nursing home are stuck with. Ourselves. I don't wish to get in trouble with the administrator so enough said.

I am bringing my sign to the Frozen 4.

Nursing home cost per month. $4250.

    MediVan trip to Columbus $1250.

2 extra large boxes of depends for the weekend $17.50.

Watching the Fighting Sioux bring home #8, Priceless.

  8. I stated that I might ban myself if State of Hockey was not banned.  As of now, he has not been.  The self-imposed ban until next year would be in protest of the troll.  I don't appreciate someone twisting the Fighting Sioux name or mocking what PCM does for the Sioux hockey community.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Geez buddy hang in there. Don't do that. Pretty soon you wil be doing other things "by yourself" if you know what I mean.

  9. I'm hitting two threads at once with this.

First off, I support the name.  Secondly I've been waiting since my college days to hear why it should be changed.  Nothing has ever been convincing.  Plus, I've always heard it from white people (why are we the only ones labeled by color?).

I became a teacher.  Go check out that building.  Rotting ceiling tile, asbestos, and crappy desks and chairs.  It'll never get repaired due to teachers not making any money and being able to donate.  Maybe I'll win the lotto one day.

While in school I was forced to take a diversity class.  I learned a lot.  I didn't much care for one political view being forced on me, but it was informative.

Now I'm teaching in California.  Last year in a very poor part of San Bernardino full of illegal immigrants from Mexico.  Very poor.  I had students that literally lived in boxes or their cars.  I was one of only a hand full of white people.

This year I'm in Palmdale teaching high school.  Again a poor area and out of 175 students I have maybe five white kids, a handful of african americans, and the rest are of hispanic origins be it Mexico or not.

The reason I bring all this up is because when my kids first saw my University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux pennant, they asked, "what's a Sigh-Ox?"  What a learning tool for me.  I got to teach the knowledge (though limited) that I have about Native Americans and especially the North Dakota tribes.  Now my students can pronounce the name and even ask about things that come up like Red Lake.

Without the name attatched to the University, no one in this country would care/hear about the Sioux/Lakota/Dakota/or whatever else.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Nice summary and a good example of how the name can benefit Native Americans.

I have been wondering what the heck happened to Graham Cracker. I was hoping to get an answer and some dialogue on this issue. Whenever I have seen someone raise what I think are legitimate questions and thoughts, those who oppose the name somehow either disappear or refuse to address the specific issues raised.

I believe Native Americans have a choice to accept a gift from another culture and make it work for them. Isn't that part of diversity? There are so many things this could lead to such as outreach for kids on the reservations for math, science, fine arts and athletic camps and clinics. If I were in a leadership position at the tribal council level I would bring these thoughts back to the reservation and consider the opportunites. That is what leadership is all about.

Graham are you still at your senate meeting? Some one wake him up or he will miss finals. Help me out here.

  10. Futhermore, none of them had a temper tantrum in front of a live audience. Very unprofessional behaviour from a hockey player. Glad it was a Gopher.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The hockey goal and damage to the boards. $750.

Forgetting your hockey stick at center ice. $197

A rink side seat to watch the Sioux pound the Gophers. Priceless.

If I wanted to be an ass, I would have inserted Psychiatric consultation. $250. (Don't fool yourselves.)

  11. While there are no current recruits on this team, there are some possibilities - Section 8 won the Great 8 tourny last weekend.  For those that don't know what that is - each section puts together an all-star team and they play an 8 team tourny.

The Moorhead players on the team were - Johnson, Deutz, Loos, Becker, Ammerman and I think Barta.

Johnson, Ammerman and Deutz were also picked for the Chicago Showcase team.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Isn't that an All-star team made up of seniors who have either not commited to a college or signed with a Junior team? Check todays Fargo Forum because I am pretty sure that is correct.

  12. HIRSCH:

    WE CRASH THE NETS,

    SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!

    GO SIOUX !!!!

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I am one of the ones who thinks we should let Hirsch suffer in peace but I thought this was pretty funny. Good thinking. Not in poor taste.

  13. Ah my personal favorite. The reliable source who gets it right from the rodent's mouth. ;)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Of course, why would anyone want to take the high road. If you are smart enough to read a newspaper, you should be smart enough to see the kid has some health problems. The kid I got the info from is not a UND kid and they would have no reason to mislead him. On the other hand, you might have another shot of Captains and Coke or a Killians and keep insulting the poor guy. I hope he plays so they can't use that as an excuse. I wouldn't expect the Gophers to make crude remarks about Robbie Bina. Why would anyone feel better making dumb-ass remarks about this kid. I always thought that was what made UND fans better. Class. Show some. See you in Columbus. Go Sioux.

  14. I remember that a bunch of the Goofy fans were giving us a hard time over how the Matt Greene incident was handled and we all pointed out that unlike their team the Sioux didn't try to hide or cover things up.  Of course they all denied that this was the case to which I say the Proof is in the Pudding.  We will likely never know the whole story behind the Hirsch incident so instead there will always be the speculation.  So rodent fans, if the rumours and signs you see are considered unwelcome or seem cruel, too bad because it is your own program's fault.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

For what it is worth. According to a kid playing Juniors this year (who was a teamate of some of the Gophers who played with him last year at Lincoln), this is indeed a health issue and it would be inappropriate for the Rodents to comment much more than they have. I think the interviews with his teamates make it clear they want him to get well. I think I would error on the side of compassion for this kid. My source is pretty reliable and he gets his info from Gopher players.

  15. All of the big  boys have been going after Purpur hard, but I feel Rob brings as much to the table as what purpur does. Rob has been with UND for a long time and knows are program and what it needs to get better.I wish Rob all the luck and if he gets the job he will be a great person to work with.GOOD LUCK ROB :0

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Purpur withdrew his application. Bollinger should be the front runner but the academic types tend to want someone who has been an AD. Bollingers experience is similar. The other five finalists (including Bollinger) had or will have phone interviews.

  16. This board and the ones re Robbie are all talking, wondering what happened to both of these players as well as the ones re Prpich and Murray--medically. People are asking if anyone knows anything, etc. Everyone is speculating, repeating what someone told them or someone they know heard from some one they heard said to the man on the moon, etc. While at the Xcel, I also heard from several persons that Tyler was admitted to the hospital. Just as I heard all about Robbie's progress from several sources through out the weekend. Now all of a sudden it's an invasion of privacy. You can't have it both ways! And the HIPPA law only applies if it was a hospital employee that gave out the information.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

HIPPA also applies to UND medical staff and officials as well as Emergency Medical staff. UND would not be authorized to release information they are privy to without the family's permission.
