  1. This happens at NDSU, UND, most schools that don't have the academic reputation of Notre Dame and the consequences would be much different.

Yes, this happens at Notre Dame, UND and other top universities. But the student athletes at these programs have to pay the consequences for an academic violation or for underage drinking. Only at the AC football program do athletes not have to pay any consequences for anything less than a rape charge.

  2. Here's the difference between premier universities and the AC:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/notre-dame-fighting-irish-qb-everett-golson-suspended-for-poor-academic-judgment-052713

While universities like Notre Dame and North Dakota will suspend and/or kick star players like Golson and Frattin off the team for violating academic rules or for drinking, the AC looks the other way when their football players steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from North Dakota tax payers. The AC administration was actually somewhat giddy that was "only" fraud against all of North Dakota and that it didn't involve rape.

Notre Dame has no problem kicking its starting QB off the football team and North Dakota has no problem kicking its top player off the hockey team but the AC won't consider any form of punishment for anything less than a rape charge. You have to sympathize with Bohl and Taylor though. If they were going to kick players off for crimes other than rape, they wouldn't have enough players to field a team.

  3. True, that would be like going from this: 72706396.UAbNONMq.jpg

    to this: Vermont_original_display_image.jpg

Oh wait, that happened? It's amazing what playing time will do to someone making a decision.

While the arena in the top picture looks very nice, there are no butts in the seats watching the game. At least people are filling up the arena in the bottom picture.;)

  4. Not sure why you quoted me. I'm just saying that academic scholarships will be included in that limit of 18. You can't get around NCAA limits by simply awarding academic scholarships.

I do know that at one time it was quite common at UND to get a "75%" scholarship broken down as follows: yr 1, 50%; yr 2, 50%; yr 3, 100%; yr 4, 100%

Yup...I'm pretty sure 75% is considered a full ride for UND Hockey. It was like that during the Gino era. It was like that during the Blaiser era and I doubt if it's changed under Hak. I believe Minnesota does it the same way...at least they did.

  5. It will need to be someone who can raise funds and interact with people from all walks of life. Strinden did that so well and Tim did a decent job of it.

Earl was a master at this. It didn't matter if you were Rick, Dagies or Iramurphy, when you walked into his office he greated you like you were Ralph Engelstad. When Earl would speak at an event, by the time he got done talking, he had pretty much picked out everyone in the audience and called them by name to recognize them. He was amazing. :)

  6. Wisconsin is kind of Defense U.

I'd say that Wisconsin "was" kind of Defense U. They had a guy named Mark Osiecki who is one of the best defensemen coaches in the country. He and Brad Berry are right at the top. I think we'll see Wisconsin's defensive unit slipping as Osiecki's recruits work their way out of the system and I think we'll see the Sioux defensive unit rising back to the top once Brad gets his recruits into the system.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Burnsville won a couple of state championships with Osiecki as a player, the Badgers won a National Championship when Osiecki was a captain, Green Bay won the USHL championship with him as a coach, the Fighting Sioux won the '97 National Championship with Osiecki as the defensemen coach and Wisconsin also won the '06 National Championship with him as the defensemen coach.

  7. Mitch Slattery of Hill Murray seems like the prototypical Fighting Sioux player, skill with a good bit of grit and edge to him. Would like to see how he develops. I know Luke Voltin played for Hill Murray, but who is the last Sioux player from Hill Murray anyway?

Todd Norman in the mid 80's. :)

  8. Great news from the Senate...now, ND House members....don't screw this up!

I think most of the legislator’s realize that there is presently a huge demand for rural doctors in North Dakota and the demand is going to be much worse 5 – 10 – 15 & 20 years from now. I believe all they want is some control on the cost of the project.

If I was going to build a house and someone was going to give me the money for my new home, that person would probably want some idea on what he/she is paying for. If I told that person that my new home is going to be in the $500K range so why don’t you just give me the $500K and I can get going on the project. That person might then say…..what if the bids come in a lot less than what you think and you end up getting everything you want for only $410K, then I’ve given you too much, what’s going to happen? I might then say……well, if something like that happens, I’ll put on a $90K “guest room” just in case a chancellor from Bismarck wants to come a visit me. That will only occur once or twice a year for a couple of hours but it will be nice to have if he does show up. So just give me the $500K and we’ll be good to go.

I suspect that if Ralph Engelstad had told the university that he was going to write them out a check for $104 million, and that they would have to manage the project, we'd be looking at a much different Ralph Engelstad Arena. It would probably be about half as nice and would have still cost $104 million.

  9. There's a reason they put so many defensemen in the NHL. Also the reason they don't seem to put many forwards in the NHL. The more talented scorers would rather go to a team where they can play offense

Actually, I believe that reason was called Mark Osiecki, but he's moved on to Ohio State. Success tends to follow Mark around.....from Wisconsin as a player to UND as Blaiser's assistant and back to Wisconsin. It will be interesting to see if he is as successful as a head coach. He's a good guy and he helped bring a national championship to the Sioux.

  10. Why is Darrell going off about Alerus Parking all of a sudden? Never heard anyone complain the lots were full.

In Darrell's world the glass is always half empty. He also expects everyone else to step up to the plate and fund a IPF, a new football stadium or parking ramps. Last year he couldn't wait for the football season and was telling everyone to get out and buy tickets and fill the Alerus because we were now in D1. Then, when it came time to step up to the plate and buy tickets to support the team, he purchased Montana and the Potato Bowl tickets. During the season he couldn't understand why there wasn't better attendence. I suspect the reason is that there were too many people like him who were only willing to support the team for a "big" game or two.

  11. hope the POS is a flop in the show.

Hope he's very successful. If he wouldn't have been called up this year you could argue that he made a mistake but when you get called up as a 19 year old he obviously has some talent. I don't know why you should be so bitter. Right now he's making a lot of money.

  12. Wow, that was brilliant work by Schlossman.

And I love Hammy's response...talking about how he's "heard" from other people about other issues, not the ones that the Herald has reported on. What a piece of work that guy is. He's always been good as a source of amusement. :D

I don’t keep up much anymore on the message boards but when I heard that Brad Schlossman had called him out I had to go and take a look. It’s great that Brad did that because Hammy slithers around like a slimy snake and his half dozen followers actually believe some of the things he says. He's had these voices in his head for years and then he likes to report that he's "heard from other people".

I have hate emails that he sent me going back as far as May 12, 2000 when his address was Hammy5150@aol.com

I don’t know if he still does this, but one of the things he used to do back in the early 2000’s was to go to the Model Camps at Mariucci and wait until he saw coaches sit down and then he’d slowly slither over the chairs until he could get close enough to hear parts of their conversations. Then he would come on the message boards and say that he “talked with a WCHA coach” and proceed to give an evaluation of a player. I'm quite sure the longest conversation he ever had with a WCHA coach was when he’d wait for them to come up the steps as they were exiting the arena and he’d say hi. Of course they would say hi back so in his mind he had a conversation with them.

I suspect it’s the same thing he does now when he “talks with a scout” or he’s had a “conversation with a parent” or he’s been “talking with league officials”. It would be pretty easy to go to a high school hockey game and get yourself situated right behind the parent of one of the players so you can pick up some information.

Anyway, great job Mr. Schlossman for revealing the phony for what he is.

  13. Oh by the way the drive through pays well , I have had season tickets since 1984 and have been to 8 frozen fours so kind of a casual fan.

Is attending Frozen Fours the measuring stick for knowing who's a good coach? If so, you still have a ways to go:

    '87 Detroit, '89 St. Paul, '97 Milwaukee, '99 Anaheim, '00 Providence, '01 Albany, '04 Boston, '05 Columbus, '07 St. Louis, '08 Denver, '11 St. Paul

11 > 8 so I say the coaches know what they're doing and you don't. If you knew coaching better than Hakstol, UND would be paying you close to $300K to lead the team to a National Championship this year. Send your phone # to Kelley on Monday and I'm sure he'll set up an interview.

  14. If tonight wasn't the last straw boy I don't know what will. One of Hakstol's trade mark is flat teams when something is on the line( see all the ff he has coached in, NH and Yale etc). I believe Hakstol is a great recruiter and asst. coach but he sure doesn't fire up the players for games. It goes back to the day he took over that we wouldn't even notice the difference in coaching styles well most of us have noticed. He relieved Eades of his duties because he wanted to improve the D well thar sure hasn't worked, we are way worse defensively then last year. I know Goon or Mafia Man will criticize this post but oh well I have had season tickets since 84 and tonight was a game that caused Gino to be replaced. Maybe Hakstol is two nice to the young men and need to be more of a disciplinarian and not their friend but the coach. We all pay good money for our tickets and should expect a better product then what we had tonight. All the talent that has come through ND and no titles for Hakstol, maybe time to move on.

When people pay money for something there's an expectation, right SIOUXELEVENS?

Just like yesterday at the drive-through. I paid for a burger, fries and coke and you didn't put the fries in there.

  15. How'd that work out for ZP? Oh yeah, with UMN winning its second national title in a row and UND hanging no banners while he was there.

It worked out great for Zach. He has a $100M contract added to the millions he made in New Jersey. So it was good that he listened when Herb Brooks said.....go where they have the best program, best coaching, best facility and best tradition.

  16. Credit where credit is due....these intermission spot features are very well done for the most part.

Still I'd prefer to not have to stare at the wiggling neck ; babbling "koober" all night

Picture is fine in Alexandria. Maybe it's your eyes. Is there anything that's ok in your life or are you just a chronic complainer? Picture is bad, play-by-play is bad, wiggling neck, babbling koober......you must be a blast to be around. You should hook up with Rosie O'Donnell.

  17. I don't understand the urgency to throw Hammer under the bus after one game. For those of you complaining, I'm wondering if you also feel your boss should have evaluated you based on your first day on the job? Sweeney was just fine but if you went back and looked at his early years I don't remember him being a "Gary Thorne" behind the microphone. So, unless Gary is waiting in the wings to take the Sioux Hockey gig, I think we should all give it a rest for a year or two.

One request I would have Jason is.....once you get the beer prices lowered and senior discount in place, could you also do something about gas prices? In addition to that, it's been getting a little too cold in central Minnesota also. I realize that I might have to go to a higher authority than you for the weather issue, but some of us like to have things to complain about. :tinfoilhat:

  18. The behavior is also consistent with a young dumb kid who still has a developing brain. His being sober or drunk cannot be confirmed nor denied. BAC half full or half empty?

So, are you saying when you don't know for sure or you can't confirm it, and he says he wasn't drunk, you should just assume that he was? Should we use that logic with everything or just this case? Do you think the police should have gone over there and wrote him a ticket for minor consumption?

  19. Premier educational institutions aren't afraid to hold their student athletes accountable. Lower end institutions that have athletes that aren’t smart enough, grown up enough or sophisticated enough to understand, try to pass off the criminals they recruit as victims.
