  1. I guess I still fail to see what President Kelley has done wrong in all of this. He was stepping into a crappy situation when he took the job in '08 and hasn't done anything about retiring the logo that hasn't been directed upon him. When you have orders from the SBoHE, and they are your bosses, you listen to them, and you do your job. He's not thrilled about these logo bills in the state legislature because they do more harm than good. This is nothing but political grandstanding on the part of Al Carlson. Would have loved to have seen this bill 3 years ago. The people that are all pissed off about never seeing Kelley at a Sioux hockey game with an indian head logo on crack me up too. So what? We have like 3 logos....wear whatever damn logo you want....if he's standing up singing the rouser when Minnesota is in town, then I'll want him fired.

    Appreciate your input Marcia. :0

  2. First we get this.....

Just had a few drinks at an estabishment and heard from a really good source some information about Danny but if you guys want me to post it I will but most will think that its jsut the rumor coming from someones mouse but im 99.9% sure this is the truth.

    Let's see......

    - had a "few" drinks at an establishment

    - heard from a very reliable source (while having a "few" drinks) at this establishment

    - 99.9% sure that what he heard over a "few" drinks is the truth

    The we get this.....

Just want to make sure and tell everyone that it may or may not be the whole story. Just what ive heard in a bar over a few drinks. Im going to be gone till tomorrow nite so wont get to any more PMs for a while. Later.

Now this is where it gets a little confusing for me when he comes back on his next post and says.......

    - this may or may not be the whole story (he's 99.9% sure it's the truth, but it may not be the whole story)

    - just what he heard over a "few" drinks

Well, I don't know about anybody else, but I believe we can pretty much run with this impeccable source. :silly:

  3. My error....I meant Oshie, but you can add Zajac, Stafford, Duncan, Chorney, Greene...and again ets...(and you could also go on to say how many McNaughton cups has Hakstol won...one is the answer, and Blaise won 5 and Gasparinni won 4)...

Easy mistake. Zach Parise and TJ Oshie are easily mistaken. Happens all the time. :silly:

But, I don't believe we ever had a "Blaise or Gasparinni" either. No Blaise or Gasparinni as coaches and no Zach Parise as a player for Hak.

If Hak was as good, accurate and competent as you are, wed be finishing 12th in the WCHA every year, right behind Tech. For someone who gets almost nothing right, you expect a lot out of other people. Maybe you should work on improving yourself before you worry about others. :silly:

  4. From a fan perespective, it's embarrasing to travel and watch your team get outplayed (did so In Denver, and Yale last year), and from a booster perspective, how much more talent does a coach need to get to the championship (Toews, Parise, etc..)

Are you talking about Zach Parise? What year did Hak have him as a player?

  5. Keep YaneA in your thoughts. She is on the injured reserve list after a fall last week. Sounds like she is going to be OK in a few weeks. Thanks to her neighbors who helped out.---Next time, she should just play against the Gophers :)

I can't believe she'd go on the IR list with the Gopher's series coming up in 12 days. Mike Prpich played the last half of the season with a severely dislocated shoulder and he couldn't even raise his arm to take off his own jersey after games. Matt Greene had an injury that was equally as bad and he wasn't even allowed to practice all week but then he'd go out there on Friday and Saturday night and bang people around without regard to his injury. Come on YaneA, be a true Fighting Sioux and lace them up and get back out on the ice. :D;)

  6. Its continuing because ndsu fans continue to come on here and try to talk down the Big Sky. You guys are now seeing that its going to pay off in recruiting and also seeing that UND fans and administration are truely happy being in the conference. All I heard about after the Montana St. game was how great the Bobcat fans where and how beautiful the stadium setting was. Thats probably the 4th or 5th best setting for a stadium in the confernce. Eastern Washington it was the Red turf and now another Big Sky team in the nat'l championship game. ndsu fans are now realizing what the conference has to offer and have actually backed up what UND fans have been saying since the Big Sky asked us to join. Thats why it won't die Danno is cause fans like you won't let it die. We are very happy to be in the BSC and thanks again for your interest in Fighting Sioux athletics.

Don't forget about Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo. I heard Dan Hammer and Scott Miller talking on KFGO one day and they were saying that it was the best setting for football that they'd been to.

Getting into the Big Sky was a grand slam for UND. When a university is making the transition to D1, obtaining membership into the BSC would be at the top of the list but they'd think it could only be a dream. But, for UND, that dream came true.

There are so many advantages in being in the BSC and most of them are mentioned in previous posts. I see that UND has offered a scholarship to a kid from Concord, CA. The chances of getting a good recruit from Concord to come to North Dakota aren't very high, but when you consider Concord is only about 50 miles from UC-Davis, 60 miles from Sacramento State and 3 1/2 hours from Cal Poly, I bet the chances go up significantly. I have no idea if this kid is a great recruit or not but if UND was competing with NDSU, SDSU or USD for him I bet I know where he'd end up. :)

  7. I wish I was in a position to place a 10M offer on hold.

Remember, the U of Minnesota also ended up turning down the Sanford money for their football stadium. I believe that was $30 or $40 million. When Sanford donates money it apparently comes with plenty of strings attached. I don't think that's unusual. Certainly Ralph wanted some things done certain ways so he put up all the money needed to complete the arena he wanted for the hockey program and he also personally managed the project. He really didn't ask for much in return.

I think the Sanford money comes with some requirements that UND is uncomfortable with similar to what Minnesota was. UND and Minnesota see quite a few donation similar to the ones that Scheel's and Sanford are giving so they don't need to sell their soul for the money. NDSU isn't in a position to turn anything down no matter what they're required to do. The Ag College never see's donations like this so they'll bend over and do whatever is required and they'll do it with a smile. I give Minnesota a lot of credit for sticking to their principles and turning the money down and to UND for putting it on hold until certain things can be worked out that will not compromise their principles.

  8. What is Hakstol thinking starting the first half the year like this?? The Sioux are never supposed to be in first place at this point. Is he nuts?? He needs to go NOW!!

GeauxSioux -- You make a very valid point there. Whatever happened to the successful "rope-a-dope" philosophy of Hak's first 6 years? ;)

I realize that other teams are catching on to this tactic so he probably feels it's time to start something new, but I've been kind of enjoying these second half surges. Most of them aren't able to duplicate it anyway. Just look at the Gophers. For the last 3-4 years The Don has been trying to implement a variant of the "rope-a-dope", but his players keep forgetting that they have to abandon the "dope" systems before the end of March rolls around.

  9. Not to ever defend Lakes, but I think he was referring to the local franchise owner. Sally Smith would have nothing to do with this decision to by 2200 tickets.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sally Smith made the call on the tickets. Along with Phil Jackson, John Barry and 32 other UND alum's, she is helping lead the $300 million campaign and is a very good friend of the UND Alumni Foundation. UND alum's are always trying to help our neighbors to the south because they can't seem to get their own alumni to help build the downtown campus, the presidents house and other needed projects.

  10. Ahhhh...the "Rick" is back.

We missed your wit...or attempt at it.

Well, if you know Genoway at all, you know that statements like this are idiotic:

"The Genoway hype here does remind me of Farve, it is all about them"

"Maybe he thinks he need to bag skate because he wants to work on increasing the length of his shifts"

Only "Andy" could make statements like that and I'm surprised that he could find someone else to agree with him.

  11. Does everyone think for one moment that Genoway is the only player working hard to improve his game? The Genoway hype here does remind me of Farve, it is all about them. Most of the players put in extra time in the weight room after games, voluntary on and off ice workouts in the morning or after practice. Maybe he thinks he need to bag skate because he wants to work on increasing the length of his shifts which most are over a minutes long and several were well over 2 minutes. Get off and let a fresh TEAMMATE on the ice to play defense. A minus 5 with all his ice time is quite clear. When this Genoway show ends and team Fighting Sioux is allowed to play, they should go a long way this year.

Cowboychuck's real name is Andy and he lives in Seattle. Apparently Oxbow helps out with the rent occasionally, but you can listen to Cowboychuck here.....

  12. i will eat my crow. ndsu did draw the most today on which is traditionally a bad day attendance wise for fcs playoffs. thanksgiving weekend hurts a lot

Very good point. With the students home for the Thanksgiving holiday it makes it very difficult to sellout a game. I noticed Sioux Hockey had the same issue up in Grand Forks. :silly:

  13. Wanted to start a different thread to focus more on how UND's athletics will be different, now that it is separate from other Dakota schools.

First off, it is clear that we will be dependent on Montana schools for rivalries and fan interest. If they leave, that creates a major conference issue. We need the Montana schools to stay in the Big Sky.

But, if the move to DI is all about marketing and placing UND's name out there in the college sports world, isn't separating ourselves from the rest of the Dakota schools a positive statement that we are different? Not joining a psuedo-NCC creates anxiety, that is understandable. With UND in the Big Sky, the coverage that UND will receive will vastly increase compared to other Dakota schools in the western US. UND will be perceived as the bold institution, the one that takes risks, the one that is innovative, while the other Dakota schools would be more likely viewed as stodgy Midwestern schools. If NDSU had had an opportunity to jump to the Big Sky by itself in 2005, it would have taken it, no questions asked. With UND actually having that opportunity, we doubt ourselves and our institution.

What's the effect on the potential success of each sport?

    Football

    - UND now becomes the only Dakota school that plays regularly in the west. UND should be able to out recruit any of the other Dakota schools in Arizona, Colorado, or California.

    - UND now offers MN and WI recruits the chance for meaningful travel. May be a negative for certain recruits that want relatives to travel to all games. But now, NDSU, SDSU, USD, UNI, WIU will all be going after the same recruits in the same locations. UND will offer something different.

    - UND would have annual games vs Montana and Montana State. Huge impact in western ND.

    - If the indoor practice facility is built, UND facilities will exceed most FCS schools.

    Overall very positive for football.

    Basketball

    - Again, UND will offer a vastly different travel experience for Minnesota and Wisconsin mid-major recruits that NDSU, SDSU, and USD can't.

    - Jones and Roebuck have to start gaining mid-major Minnesota and Wisconsin recruits. That hasn't been happening yet.

    - Travel issue will likely be used very effectively against UND in recruiting.

    - Facilities are excellent. Games against Montana and Montana State could be "Ralph" games.

    - Pre-conference scheduling would be very regional

    Overall neutral to even negative

    Volleyball

    - Again, UND would offer a vastly different experience than the other Dakota schools.

    - Volleyball talent is very good in the west.

    - Travel isn't in the winter.

    - Pre-conference scheduling would be very regional

    Overall positive

    T&F and CC

    - Dependent on practice facility more than conference

    Swimming

    - Tremendously positive as it would be affiliated with a higher league than the Summit

    Tennis

With new Grand Forks Wellness Center, the facilities will be top of the line.

    Huge new recruiting area.

    - Very positive

    Golf

    - Drop men's golf. Not worth it with no conference.

    Softball

The recruits come from the West.

They have to travel early anyway.

A practice facility would help immensely.

    Big Sky will start softball

    - Very positive.

    Soccer

    Expanded recruiting area.

A practice facility would help with winter conditioning.

    - Positive

    Baseball

    No meaningful conference.

These would be my major goals for the UND athletic department:

    1. Establish and continue rivalries with Montana and Montana State, even if it means FBS eventually.

    2. When Minnesota and Wisconsin leave the WCHA, ensure that a hockey conference relationship with Notre Dame is established.

    3. Drop baseball. Start men's lacrosse and begin a conference with Denver, Air Force, USC and Stanford.

We don't live in the NCC world anymore.

    Excellent post Star.

I see absolutely no negatives with UND being in the Big Sky. I really think if UND markets this right it will be a huge boost for the university. As I've stated in other posts, the Sioux should have a huge recruiting advantage when we go up against the other regional schools. We're talking about 17 and 18 year old kids here so it shouldn't be too hard of a sell for all the sports mentioned above.

When we're going up against the XDSU's for a recruit in football, the coaches will be telling them:

    - Our home conference schedule includes the likes of Montana, Montana State, Idaho State, Portland State, Sacramento State, Cal Poly, UC Davis, etc.

    - Our home non-conference game is SDSU, USD or NDSU.

    - Our FBS away game is Texas Tech in front of 60,000 people (example)

    - Our away non-conference game is at SDSU, USD or NDSU

    - Our away conference games are in Southern California, Sacramento, San Francisco area, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Montana and Colorado.

    - Our training facilities are the best in the region

    - We are the only Liberal Arts University in the region

    - We are THE premier tier one research university in the region.

    - We have a Medical School, Law School, the top Aviation School in the country, a top regional Business School, etc, etc, etc.

Now, we'd still have the academic advantages if we were in the Summit/MVFC, but the schedule, TV games and conference travel location advantages that the Big Sky Conference offers should convince most 17 and 18 y/o kids that they'd rather spend the next 4 to 5 years at UND than at SDSU, USD or NDSU.

So again, I couldn't be happier to be the Dakota school that was picked to be in the Big Sky. Several months ago all we could do is dream about being in the BSC and nobody would have every believed it was possible. It's been a great last 5 days. :)

  14. I'm still in even if they take away our prize for winning. I just have to figure out who I've selected previously.

Here we go Dagies, here we go. [clap,clap].........Here we go Dagies, here we go. [clap, clap]..........Dagies, Dagies he's our man.....if he can't do it no one can. :D

  15. Didnt know where else to put this but Hak said this is the start of another great contract with Maine in which they will be coming here next year.

Also we have contracts signed with Boston and Vermont thru 2016. DIdnt have exact years but im assuming alternating.

I think its great we step up and get quality teams in the ralph rather then UMASS haha.

    Which Boston?

  16. Summit to visit UND on Nov 1-2

Hopefully, Faison and Kelley have been rattling their cage. :silly:

    Schlossman's twitter's are classic:

I really hope the Big Sky Conference steps up and offers UND full membership and USD football membership in the next few weeks before the Summit makes their visit. I have absolutely no interesting the Summit League and even if Montana leaves the BSC I'd rather be in that league with Montana State and South Dakota.

I've always felt the Summit League was a big joke and now these clowns say they're going to make a trip to Grand Forks to gather up as much information about UND as possible. Dimple now says there's a lot of interest in UND. After that idiot makes his visit here, I think UND should make a trip to the Summit League offices and a few sites visits (at the Summit League's expense) to see if the league is up to UND standards.
