2025-26 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
RhettRingers replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
The risk/reward for him playing in the NCHC versus playing in the B1G. He'll put up solid numbers in the B1G next year. Similar style of play to Major Junior. NCHC is a meat grinder every weekend. -

We very much had interest in McKenna, especially with him being a Western Canadian. Problem is who his advisors are. -

McKenna is generational talent. Will be at whatever college he chooses for one year. Maybe we are looking at guys that are the after thoughts. The guys who will buy into the program and be here for 3-4 years. That's the model that seems to win in early April. -

Define "decent", if "decent" is McKenna then the guys we are talking with don't come close to that. -

Exactly. Who knows what type of numbers McKenna puts up in the NCHC. -

Lots of things happened with him. Still undecided is what my source told me over the weekend. -

We aren't getting a "decent" CHL guy... -
I would like to think the NCHC is the best conference to get guys ready for the NHL, I think the B1G and Hockey East are similar to Major Junior. So, if a kid really wants to challenge himself and get out of his comfort zone, he'd choose the NCHC.
-
Yeah. I'm agreeing with you that they will ultimately play NCAA. I think all of these guys want to experience the college life for a year or two.
-
Yeah now they can do both...
-
I think you will see more American born players go the Major Junior route. Already saw it with a local kid.
-
100% is. Still a business through and you want to keep that top end talent for as long as you can.
-
Was supposedly coming to UND, then the injury happened then we fired our coach. His girlfriend goes to University of Manitoba, and he wanted to get closer to home. Unsure what his plan is. If he does choose the college route I was told it was UND. He may stay in the dub though. I was told he isn't academically eligible also. Lots of the GM/Owners of these major junior teams don't want their superstars to leave unless it's for the NHL. Medicine Hat scheduled pre-season games next year in Whitehorse (McKenna's hometown)

They very much are. They went after McKenna very hard.
-
That's why you are seeing a number of the high-end ones giving a silent commitment. From what I've been told Misa hasn't given anyone commitment, but he may go straight to the national league.
-
Maybe he doesn't want to bring any unnecessary distractions, just a thought.
-
I have not heard that, but I also have not asked my connections that question.
-
He was a little shaky for a few shifts in the third, but he weathered the storm. Sanderson looks like a 10-year veteran out there.
-
That's what my connections have told me. Unless something drastically changes, he'll be at Michigan.
-
I have also heard that.
-
Not sure I'm the biggest fan of that idea. His brother probably wouldn't play much. I know Michigan State did that with the Cullen's, but Brooks is a lot better prospect than Nolan DuPont.
-
Hearing DuPont is a serious possibility, would still be a year out but he would excel his schooling and be here is a young 17-year-old. Similar to what Jonny Toews did.
-
It's the first year these guys are eligible. Give Bryn more time to develop relationships. If we don't land a big name CHL guy it isn't the end of the world. You do realize McKenna is generational talent and everyone wants him. He will play college hockey for one year be the first pick next year and be a top 6 forward in the NHL in the fall of 26.
