  1. Will they offer a full scholarship to someone that they think can fulfill that role?

That's a tough find - looking for a player to be very good (to push BE and be a reliable back-up) but also be willing to wait for playing time.

I'd say the most recent example is Karl Goehring. He was brought in after Schweitzer's freshman season ('97 championship), and ultimately ended up with the starting job 1/3 of the way into the following season. Schweitzer was "the man" after his freshman season, but it just goes to show you can never be certain.

  2. I never said it was Mite hockey. I said if you're willing to go through the hard work in practice you should be given a chance to play. If the coaches don't think you're good enough to play in games they shouldn't get your hopes up by putting you on the roster to begin with.

So what you're saying is Walski should be given a chance to play, or to use one of your terms, is ENTITLED to start due to the work he's put in over the years; but Eidsness shouldn't be ENTITLED to start because he's only a freshman regardless of the results on the ice.

Gee, I get it now... ???

  3. If the coaching staff felt Walski was so terrible that he doesn't deserve to start at any point in his career, then they shouldn't have ever put him on the roster at all. That way he could have walked on at a lesser school and at least been able to PLAY rather than see his entire college hockey career go to waste. I really feel for the kid.

As for Eidsness, he's not bad but then again how many freshman goalies are really tearing it up this year? Not much to compare him to. He's okay. Not bad, but not great. He's no Lamoureux or Parise, that's for sure.

That's why they brought Greico in a couple years back, but he left the team and thus we have Walski as our backup this year and not 3rd string.

It was Walski's choice to join the team. If he thought his situation was so bad, he could have left under his own free will and pursued playing time elsewhere. He didn't. 'Nuff said.

PS. Who are you to say his college career was a "waste?"

  4. Yes, the younger guys are the future. I just have a difficult time with a 1st year player being given that sense of entitlement without first working hard to earn it. Unless you're a future NHL superstar like Belfour/Parise/Toews you should have to pay your dues and slowly but surely work your way into a starting job.

By your logic it seems the only "work" that matters is what is done at the college level. You fail to consider the work that has been put in at the lower levels up to this point. Perhaps E is where he is because he's been working hard and "paying his dues" prior to college in order to be properly prepared for this level of play.

  5. I think if we take a step back and look at the big picture, things aren't all that bad. I thought 5 on 5 the team was solid, so when the special teams play comes around and they can get Finley back anchoring the blue line this will be a pretty solid team. What else should we be expecting this early in the year while players find their roles?

  6. Yeah, thats what I thought too. The Gopher game is televised and I believe it was not part of the season ticket package so alot of people must just want to see the game on tv. Can't totally blame them I guess, a day down in St. Paul can get pretty spendy I guess, especially with these times. But as you said it's WCHA hockey so I assume it would have filled up, two pretty good games actually, especially with SCSU and UMD havins some pretty good games in the last few years.

Why would the gopher game be part of their season ticket package if it's not technically their home game? Is it part of the MSU-M and/or UMD season ticket package?

  7. And the last player Gabby tried hard to get to the Wild really helped, huh?

Maybe it is time for Marion Gaborik to put the team on his back and carry them to the promised land, instead of whining for one of his buddies to come and shoulder the load.

(BTW, I feel terrible about contributing to the off-topic direction of this thread...)

You are very right, time for Gabby to be a leader.

As great as Gaboric can be as an individual player I almost wish the Wild would trade him. It seems when I watch a Wild game as soon as Gaboric gets the puck it's a 1 man game. The guy should play in the NBA not the NHL. When I think of the great players the Sioux have had (Hrkac, Parise, Toews, Oshie, Panzer, etc) they all made the players around them better. Gaboric seems to exist to catch the puck. At least that's the way it seems to me.

I've always thought Koivu is the guy they should be "building" around. Jaques should also let him wear the "C" full time instead of playing the captain merry-go-round.

  8. When Norton and the other guy were previewing the Wisco/Denver match-up on Friday, the host (can't remember his name) asked Norton how the Pioneers got to where they are after the early departure of Brock Trotter, etc., and Norton's reply was something to the effect of: "Bozak has stepped up, and Trotter has scored a lot too."

Did anyone else catch that, or was I just hearing things?

  9. Sure, losing tonight didn't end their season, but it is not a good sign.

They let the #9 team in the WCHA (I don't care how strong everyone thinks the league is) tie the clinching game with 5 seconds left, in their own barn, while on the PP. Not a good sign.

Thankfully there's a game tomorrow. I'm eager to see how they respond.

  10. That last 3-on-2 was the same thing that happened last night a few times. Passes to the skates and not the stick.

They need to connect on passes a bit more consistently.

It looked like the better play would have been to shoot the puck and grind for a rebound. They haven't been doing that much lately.

  11. Does anyone know the satelite coordinates for the game tonight? I haven't been able to use my satellite for the last few series and I think there was some sort of change since then.

  12. There's a common denominator here. We are a team. A team full of goons and thugs. But..............here's our halo.

There's a common Dean-ominator for idiocy on this board, too.

I suggest you stick to watching the women's game.

  13. Excellent point.

Boy, the league sure is on a roll getting things right AFTER THE FACT!! Since everything's being reviewed these days, maybe they should take two points away from DU in the standings and give one to SCSU and one to UW.

  14. Well... what more can the WCHA add? Gwozdicky whines and the WCHA is taking another look?

    http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2008...northdakota.php

    What a frickin' bawlcalf.

They should be reviewing why Radke and Testwuide weren't given the gate for their obvious agreement to drop 'em earlier in the game. If Radke was such a bad culprit, why didn't they do something about it earlier when they had a chance? The refs were probably trying to protect DU's short bench, I don't know.

  15. Gwozdecky displeased with Sioux

I'm sure this is going to stir things up again.

Funny, I seem to recall the Sioux starting the 3rd with a 5X3 advantage because Mannino took the extra penalty. I wonder if that had anything to do with the melee? Hmmmmmm...

Seems to me there is also something in this "code" that relates to pairing up one-on-one during scrums. If you look at the other penalty-riddled games the Sioux have played this year a lot of this "stuff" has been started by the cute little 2-on-1s the other teams like to start with our guys.
