  1. At one point in the 3rd period in 5 on 5 play, QU controlled the puck and the zone for about 50 seconds. It was like watching North Dakota take on the Bismarck Demon Squirt C team on that shift. Hockey is evolving...teams should take note.

Had UND been in that game against Quinnipiac, I think the score would have been exactly the same.

    Go Yale!

Never mind the North Dakota vs. Bismarck Demon Squirt Team...it reminded me of the North Dakota teams in the late 90s.

  2. There has been a lot of discussion on this board about upsets in the national tourney and how teams that are supposed to win it more often than not don't. Well, Quinnipiac is showing they are the one who is SUPPOSED TO win it all. Most all of us have just refused to believe it until now. I kind of hope they get it done, but I'd be fine with Yale, too.

  3. Let me get this straight. If we could go back in time and change who won the 05' title game out of UND and Denver (Hakstol's first year as head coach), then have UND miss two consecutive NCAA tourneys (06' and 07'), and then have UND win 1 game in their next 6 NCAA tourneys, you would be happier today with Hakstol as our head coach? That is absolutely nuts. Gwoz's resume during Hakstol's era isn't even on the same level.

I'm sure If Hak would've won in '05 and things played out as you've listed, he'd still definitely be on the hot seat because the expectations would be a title every 5 years instead of the current standard of 10! :)

  4. Nope, that was the first gamer I ever owned, Chris Leinweber.

Interesting note about Leinweber...didn't he switch numbers during his career? I want to say he wore both 5 and 24.

  5. IIRC, Grimaldi has only stated that his goal was to get to the NHL as fast as possible. That doesn't necessarily mean he's on a specific timeline here at UND. Who knows what "as fast as possible" will actually turn out to be.

Edit: Guess I was too slow for siouxforce!

  6. Because Lee developed so well here under Eades?? I stated Eades did well with defensive defensemen (Commie and Greene). The ncaa is no longer allowing us to develop defensive defensemen, so UND brought in a coach who is better at developing offensive defensemen. Wisconsin might have an argument to make with your statement about UND being the place to go for NHL defense prospects too.

You may want to find different examples of definsive D-men under Eades, because I think Sandelin coached Commie and I think Berry coached Greene. I don't think Eades coached the D-men until Berry left and they hired Jackson to coach the forwards.

  7. Didn't this year's team lead the nation in d points (collectively); I'm sure I'm wrong but I thought I read that somewhere. Must have been on 4/1 or something.

I want to say they were second, maybe to Denver.

  8. My vote is for Simpson. The kid was consistent, scored some big goals, and didn't take a lot of penalties, let alone "dumb" ones. He leads by example - exactly the qualities you should have in a captain IMO.

  9. Hey, Snake, do you happen to remember the 5-5 or 6-6 tie with Northern Michigan in either 1990, 1991, or 1992?

I can't say that I do. I regularly started attending games probably in the '91-'92 or '92-'93 seasons. I was just starting HS then, and it was an extremely cheap thing to do on the weekends when you could walk up to the old Ralph and basically have a ticket given to you! Despite the results on the ice we always had a great time at those games.

  10. Matt Morelli called...he concurs as well.

Disclaimer: (I mean this with absolutely NO disrespect to Todd Jones, Darren Bear, or Matt Morelli, who are all far better hockey players than I could ever hope to be...)

I should've had the disclaimer as well. Despite the record of some of those early 90s teams, that's where I really grew into my love for Sioux hockey and I look back on those years very fondly.

  11. I felt Forbort's improvement from last year to this year was quite impressive. Although I appreciate most things Coach Eades did at UND, developing defensemen for the NHL wasn't, IMO, one of his strong areas. He was very good with "defensive defensemen," but didn't seem able to do much to improve the more offense-minded players. Personally, I have always preferred to have the lock-down defensive players at UND and didn't care much for the puck-handling, offensive defensemen. However, after watching Big Mac get called for a penalty every time he touched another player this year, I recognize the NCAA isn't going to let us play a bruising defensive style anymore.

This, plus the fact that getting the puck out of your own zone and up the ice quickly is a necessity in today's college game.

  12. I have been called a homer and a toadie, so I will wear that hat with pride :) . I think the puck in on end and is in. But that's me. :) How does that sound? :)

I like the way you think! I tried like heck to see that puck over the line, but no matter how long I crossed my eyes or blurred my vision I just couldn't see white. I need a bigger screen...

  13. I never see white between the puck and the line, so IMO it never crossed the line completely on the initial shot. It never fully crossed until the net was knocked off in the big collision with the goalie. I think they made the right call, but their reasoning was questionable.

  14. Regardless of personnel, I think we really need to evaluate our systems on the forecheck, powerplay, breakout, and d zone coverage.

I would spend all summer bag skating guys with parachutes and weights.

We need to be quicker and make quicker, better passes.

We need to quit playing along the walls and start attacking the scoring areas.

We need to leave our zone with speed and numbers as a cohesive unit.

We need to put the puck on net and have guys winning battles to the rebound areas.

We need to make guys miss in order to advance the puck.

I agree completely. IMO the whole weekend can be summarized in one sentence:

    UND didn't play fast.

Having players with speed is one thing, but if you're not playing "fast" it doesn't matter.

It just seemed like the whole team was way too deliberate with the puck on their sticks. The extra split second they took to make decisions with the puck cost them the entire weekend. They did not "play fast."

UND needs to figure out how to play faster next season. I think the Eastern teams have figured this out, while the majority of the west is still playing the rough & tumble style.

  15. Doesn't?? Please explain why. If you are top line guy and your team is down 1 going into the 3rd in a must win scenario and you don't get a sniff of ice time in that final period...what's the rationale? Not saying he needs to be benched but this line combo isn't, hasn't and IMO won't work going forward.

Maybe they're referring to the extreme case - suit & tie???
