Med school, law school, 20,000 students, Div. 1 Horizon League.

Could be a school the NCHC considers.  Especially to satisfy WMU and MU in the event ASU or another western school is brought in.

If the NCHC didn't take a Power 5 school they won't be taking Oakland anytime soon. I suspect they'd join the WCHA or we could see the CCHA reform IF Oakland actually makes a team. Remember these are only studies at this point.

Think the NHL is looking bigger, schools like Pitt, Buffalo, Penn or Temple, maybe Stony Brook.

Right...cause Oakland University is so massive.

Having lived near StL...they are ripe for a college team.

Kelley inherited EERC leadership, as well as the nickname.  By the time he was finished, both issues had been addressed.  Kelley also oversaw the D1 transition, the birth of UAS, and a construction boom punctuated by a new med school, and endured a shaky period of 'leadership' from the Chancellor/SBoHE.  Can't say whether he delegated effectively, but that is perhaps a question of style.  Like head coaches, presidents get too much credit and too much blame.  Maybe Kelley was not legendary, but terrible?  Critique is fair, but slanting the facts is not.  Can anyone honestly say that UND was, on balance, worse off when he left than when he arrived?

Having little to no access to the facts, here's what I can say about Kelley.

    A. He's better then his predecessor

    B. He was student friendly while I was a campus student, but his popularity with staff amd students took a nose dive in his later years.

    C. He botched the nickname from start to finish. In the early years, he tried to play it neutral but it was later revealed he was trying to retire the name as quickly as possible. Then there was the nickname committee and vote debacle. The logo design I leave on Schafer.

    D. While several new buildings were built (with private donations for these projects) and several were renovated, other buildings fell into disrepair.

    E. Several teams and majors were cut right after his administration. It's conceivable that these could have been avoided for some (likely not all) with better budgeting during his tenure.

    F. Due to lack of transparency, I don't know how much of C-E are really his fault, as opposed to the fault of state officials.

Ultimately I do think he tried to do what he thought was best, but a lot went wrong at the end of his watch and his lack of transparency led to distrust and dislike by students, teachers and alumni alike which makes it hard to see him in a favorable light.

In short, I don't expect any alumni to donate money for a Kelley Hall anytime soon.

It sounds like Ohio State thinks they can get these kids just because they are Ohio State.

To bad Ohio isn't still in the NCAA D1, because they could have done what Miami is doing in Columbus.

I think this is also a problem with the Gophers. Lots of in state talent has been going to other Minnesota schools. Most notably UMD

A sold out Betty vs a damn near empty REA. The women had their chance to make WH something but not many showed their support in the seats compared to on social media.

That's true of most of our our sports. How many fans support golf, soccer, tennis, track, swimming and Diving or softball?

What gets me is that the hockey team knew the school was in a budget crunch and still had that massive budget when teams across the Red River were equally competitive for a fraction of the cost. As soon as they were no longer declared "safe" they had huge target on their backs and they have no one to blame but their own inept staff.

That assumes that ASU sticks around that long, they wouldn't be the first school to have a program that folds. For being one of the largest Universities in the country, ASU still has no solid plans for an Arena and team facilities that would befit a D1 institution, they are still relying on the former clubs staff and have shown zero interest in recruiting a professional staff that will attract top talent to the new school. Additionally, they are still without a conference as the Big10, NCHC and the WCHA have all said no.  Far from being the boon to an expansion of college hockey, ASU could still become a cautionary tale of what happens when the schools try to enter the sport halfheartedly.

NeutralZone rated their recruiting class as 9th best. ASU doesn't want WCHA if they can avoid it. I think Big wants to snipe an NCHC team for their 8th member and both conferences are waiting to see if that happens.

Scenario A: NCHC team leaves for Big, ASU fills vacant slot in NCHC

    B. No NCHC teams leave, ASU joins Big

    C. NO NCHC team leaves, ASU and one WCHA team joins NCHC, Big stays at 7.

If I recall correctly Pac 12 network aired the series Air Force played against ASU last year. They could have an eye on being a founding member of Pac 12 hockey conference.

Perhaps. But that could take a decade or more to pan out as they need more actual PAC teams first. The other western conferences offer better opportunities in the near term.

Air Force wants games against the other academies, so if Navy starts hockey Air Force will be with them.  AFA has lax too, but plays in the Southern Conference because the Patriot League has nine lax teams.  Air travel doesn't seem to be a problem that AFA worries about and like Arizona St, it doesn't see the WCHA worthy of having them.

Perhaps, but Atlantic Hockey is even less worthy. I suppose they could play in the NCHC and compete with the other CO teams instead of an Ohio team but that's also unlikely to happen.

Yeah, there are a lot of moving parts.  There has been rumors about Penn restarting hockey and Pitt and Syracuse starting teams, and almost all of Atlantic Hockey has made upgrades in both facilities and scholarships.  A league change really wouldn't be any different for Air Force.  Really seems like the whole state of Pennsylvania is ready to get on the college hockey bandwagon, as they seen the success of Penn St.  Something will happen, but not sure what.

I know why this won't happen, but it would really be better for AF to join the WCHA and then just play a non conference series against Army.

  10. Sadly I haven't been able to attend a game in person since the new name was adopted (Texas is pretty far away), so I can't comment much on how persistent the booing is (although I could occasionally hear it on the TV), or which teams have fostered the best environment, but in terms of support, I'm pretty sure the athletes are smart enough to realize that fans are booing the name, not them or their performance.

    No it wasn't.

And even if it was (and again, it wasn't), having input from everyone sure worked out well for choosing the new nickname didn't it.

Well as a current MS student and BS grad I would have thought the $80K (rough estimate) I've invested on my two degrees might have warranted a vote.

I'm not sure what went wrong with the committee. They repeatedly ignored what polls indicated that most people wanted. Rumor has it Kelley appointed a lot of PC minded members but I'm not sure how true that is.

  12. For the record, one can accept the change and move on while still recognizing that the NCAA/UND administration have mishandled pretty much every step of the process.

We can still support the school but that doesn't mean we have to agree with their logo or funding decisions. Most people I know, fall into this category.

Get your point and totally agree... not sure, however, some of these folks love the University as much as they revere a name and the nostalgia surrounding the teams and player of the past who wore said name so proudly.  Others fortunately get it... that the University and the components that comprise it (including Athletics) are one in the same. The University isn't some necessary evil that exists so that the sports bros can attend a hockey game. The persistence of this fight and divisiveness has only allowed UND to get in the way of its own progress. One need only look south to a scenario where all cylinders are chugging along and moving an organization in the same direction. Amazing what can happen when students, staff, alumni and other friends of a university are all on board with a common goal and vision. But we'll continue to hate ourselves as we bury the bullet deeply into our clown-shoe feet and trip over them at the same time. Sad.

I think the school should have road out the "No Name" policy for longer. Both sides were moderately happy with it for the time being. But no...the administration(s) had to put fuel on the fire. First with the nickname committee, then with the terrible logo.

But fires aside, the fans did submit some truly unique names. How did names like Green Hawks or Sundogs* ever get past the initial cut?

*As a meteorologist I liked this name, as a fan I think it was terrible. No one besides Hawaii wants to be named after a rainbow.

Kennedy saying he needed $60 million to save/bring back the women's team was fairly accurate.

     That shouldn't cost anything.

You'd think Minnesota and Wisconsin should have the abilities to broadcast games.

I agree ...you think they'd be able to realize that in times of tight budgets, some things need to go such as the $25K banquet and weekly awards

This update on the Hyslop pool contains possibly the best (or worst, depending on your point of view) example of empty speech I have seen in a long, long time.

Give that woman a prize or something.

This was one criticism I had with cutting Swimming and Diving to begin with. The school will likely still keep the pool because most 4 year colleges have pools plus the community seems to be pushing them that way too (not sure if they'll help with the budget though).

All I can say for sure is that being from Minnesota, not having somewhere to swim would have given me pause on choosing UND.
