Fetch Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Just to show my kinder gentler side I thought I'd post this http://community-2.webtv.net/Velpics/HUM/ we have hummingbird feeders at our lake place - But have never seen a nest Quote
Siouxmama Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Not a bird watcher, but I know a couple. Looking at those pictures, you'd never guess that they are that small. For those of you that didnt look past the first page, there are a few more pages to go through, scroll to the bottom of each page for the next page option. The last picture is a cool comparison. Fetch Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 Yeah that last one really shows the scale - that you don't get from the 1st few pages Quote
Fetch Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 If you have never been here - I highly recommend it - even if your not a bird watcher - One of the nicest places around here & you need to get out of your vehicle & see whats all there http://www.sullyshillbirdfest.com/ It always amazes how many people have been to the casino & it's not far from it - But have never been here See the registration section for the Lake Alice tour I went to a duck banding workshop here once & the trap had a already banded mallard (we gave it another) & a Black duck - they took us out to Lake Alice in a Bus, from the Devils Lake USFWS offices - early & there were only a dozen or so that signed up - most didn't want to band & sex the birds - so my daughter & I did most of them (little buggers can sure scratch with those claws on their feet) One year they gave rides on their air boat (Lake Alice was known as the everglades of the north - before the water came up) - cool deal for sure Some of you Young guys (& Old guys) Chicks (& Women) dig this place (& the casino) Quote
Siouxmama Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I grew up in Devils Lake, and making the short drive out to Sully's Hill was always a highlight of the summer. My parents would always take us out there a few times a summer. We also went there on many field trips for school. It is a beautiful place, and a trip I would urge you all to go on. You can see deer, elk, buffalo, many birds and the infamous prairie dog town. If you see nothing else, you will see the prairie dogs. I have a couple of friends that got married there...inside the preserve. We were bussed in from outside the gates. The ceremony took place on the senic overlook, and we all would look over our shoulder every time we would hear the rustling of leaves. Never knew if the herd of buffalo was going to show up, and glad we didn't have to find out. Not sure how we all would have fit into the few vans they had there for transporting us! It's been a few years since I have been there, but this summer I will take my kids there. Thanks for the reminder about the place, Fetch. Lake Alice is near where I used to live (between Penn and Minnewaukan), along with Mauvais Coulee being in my back yard. And when I say back yard...I mean it. The lake rose and Mauvais is now part of our yard there. Quote
Goon Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I watch the ducks and Geese land in my decoys before I shoot them does that count. Quote
Fetch Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 Yeah on that banding thing - I wore a camo hat & all knew I was a duck hunter I don't think any of the others were real pleased with me or all my questions & comments - But I carried a Alum. metal thing like a multi barreled gatlin gun looking thing about 3' long that had hundreds of bands (of all sizes) on it & I joked that if I took off now, I could make a small fortune on EBay Quote

I mean Duck hunters are bird watchers. I think nothing is more pleasing than seeing green head mallards flying by, or snow geese. The best time is during Early Goose in the fall when the ducks land in my floating goose decoys and my dog looks at me with the I can't believe you not shooting look, and then flushes them. Quote
