Retired Numbers

There was a trivia question on the jumbotron before the game last weekend that asked us which numbers were retired, and the answer was 12 and 23.... We all knew 23, but we were just wondering if we could maybe get a little info on who was #12 and why, if anyone knows anything. That would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

GO FIGHTING SIOUX!!!

Terry Casey I believe.

Died in a car crash back in about '66. All American.

My best recollection anyway.

Right on, not sure about the year. I always found Casey's official picture to be a bit haunting. Rather than the other pictures this is a closeup of his face (rather than a full-body in uniform picture.) He's looking off in the distance looking...I don't know, driven. In the old programs they always had a black diagonal band across the picture.

Quick question just regarding the players numbers. Why is we use only numbers into the lower 30's and not all the way up to the 99's. I thought it was a WCHA thing till Anchorage came to town. Anyone know?

I think that historically, for whatever reasons, hockey numbers go from 1 to 30, with an occasional 35 for a third string goalie.

Bookend numbers.

Rest of the team selects the numbers in between.

Alaska's coach, probably as a recruiting incentive, lets players choose any number that they want, from 1 to 99.

That confirmation was when UAA was at the Final Five a few years ago. Interesting how certain players selected certain numbers.

Of course, all of this is premised on the premised that I rarely know Jack.

Tradition.

Phillippe Lamoureux was the first and only UND mens hockey player to wear "34".

Now that Jordan Parise is gone he's wearing "1".

How quickly they forget.

I stumped this board with that question (and it became a thread all by itself) half a decade ago:

In some ways this still makes me sad:

After reading the old thread on the retired number 12, I found out from Goon's post about Joel Otto. I was at the game in Bemidji friday night and saw his name hanging from the rafters and wondered who he was.
