  • 2 weeks later...

In the past 2 months, there have been several anti-semitic and homophobic hate crimes committed on the UND campus, in the dorms and even in the Social Work building!

Some of these "incidents" include (but are not limited to): The directory in Gillette was defaced with anti-gay slang. And Jewish students had their property vandalized. They were also bullied, and tormented with various Nazi-related stuff. One Jewish student was even forced to withdraw from UND because of the harassment.

As most of you know, I like to take a stand for things I believe in... And I believe that this is a really big problem, not only at UND, but across the country and the rest of the world!

Some emails I have received about these crimes:

Dear Residents,

Last weekend the marble bench memorializing Tom Dollins was destroyed in the Walsh Quad. This greatly saddens our staff, especially those who knew him, as well as his family who donated the bench to the University after his death. I am writing you today as we search for information as to who may have been responsible for this heinous act. This bench was located outside of Bek Hall, and I have included a picture with this email. It was made out of solid marble, and would have taken considerable force to break in half as it was found on Monday.

For those of you who may not have had the opportunity to know Tom Dollins before he passed away, Tom was a UND student who lived in Walsh Hall from August 2004 to October 2005. Tom was well known by his fellow students not only in Walsh Hall, but the Walsh Quad as well. He very much enjoyed the outdoors, and loved to grill out in the quad for his fellow students. Tom passed away in October 2005 due to complications from a heart transplant that he had received earlier in his life. He was 20 years old.

The Dollins family wanted to memorialize their son in a place that he was the most happy, and the bench where he used to grill has been in our Quad since shortly after his passing. I am greatly disturbed that someone has destroyed this precious monument, and would greatly appreciate any information anyone has from last weekend to bring the perpetrators to justice.

If you have any information about this or any other incident that has taken place in the Walsh Quad, please contact the Walsh Complex office at 777-8272 and ask to speak to myself directly. Any of the Housing staff, including the Hall Directors, Residence Life Coordinators and Resident Assistants are also seeking your information. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

~Rob

To Residence Hall Students,

I am writing due to several incidents that have been reported in UND residence halls. The mission of University Housing is to support the education of students by providing a comfortable, respectful community for all residents. We value the differences each individual brings, as well as the opportunity this provides to learn from and educate each other.

Incidents of intolerance, some of which have had cultural, religious and sexual orientation inferences, have recently been reported within and around our residential community. These will not be tolerated and we are working to determine responsible parties. Should you have information related to these incidents, or any act of intolerance or violence in the residence halls, please contact a residence life staff member, the University Police Department (777-3491), the Housing Office (777-4251), or myself. The Dean of Students Office (777-2664) is an additional resource.

As you know, all residence halls have key controlled access to the outside doors and are locked 24 hours a day, and all guests are expected to be escorted by a resident of that building. In order for the policy of controlled access and escorted guest to be effective, never allow the tailgating of persons into your residence hall.

You have a unique opportunity to live with peers from different backgrounds from all parts of the United States and the world. We feel this should be among the best out-of-classroom learning experience that you will have in preparation for living in an increasingly global society. We are committed to providing a positive living environment for all students.

Cindy Spencer

Residence Life and Education Director

These crimes make me disappointed, angry, upset, and frustrated with UND students. I just wanted to get the word out!

No offense, but I would love to see you argue that point with the Jewish kid who was harassed so much that he dropped out.

I agree that it does have something to do with drunk college kids, but at the same time there is also a lot to do with prejudice.

You have to agree that there are a lot of hate crimes (maybe not so much at UND but everywhere), and that there has to be something done about it.

I'm pretty sure he did not withdraw from school, just moved out of the dorms.

This has more to do with drunk college kids than with actual hate. There's a big, big difference.

so these college kids are drunk 24/7? the breaking of the bench is prolly drunk college kids but the harassing of a student in the dorms is just plain old bullying! I thought people left that stuff in high school but obviously I am wrong! for some odd reason these kids in the dorm felt the need to pick on this one kid. I feel for this kid and if anyone in the walsh dorm hall reads this forum PLEASE STAND UP FOR THIS KID!

I'm not sure why you're drunk at 2:16pm, but you sure do a great job sounding like a moron. Keep up the good work!

Why is speaking out against racism and bullying moronic? Why do you believe that someone speaking out against racism and bullying is drunk? Is it because you believe only drunks and morons have the capacity to speak out against racism and bullying?

I think both of these examples are disgusting. Ridiculing someone because of their religion, the massacre of their ancestors, shooting at them with a gun (albeit a pellet gun, its still an act of violence) is unacceptable and should not be tolerated by ANYONE!! Breaking an expensive bench that is not your property is unlawful. When I read what that bench represented, I know now that it was immoral and profane as well; the same as destroying headstones in a cemetary.

If you think that those acts should be tolerated because college students don't know any better, or because they're young and stupid, or because they have warped senses of humor, or because they were drunk, you need to spend some time speaking with victims of the holocaust or their family members and with the family of the boy whose memory that bench represented. Maybe, just maybe, you'll leave that meeting with the understanding of why many of us on this board or in society don't accept these incidents as merely the innocent acts of dumb and/or drunk college students.

The injury we do and the one we suffer are not weighed in the same scales. ~Aesop, Fables

Well then, if the harassment only forced him out his dorm, that's OK. Regardless of whether a person is drunk, stupid, or just a plain old racist, Harassment/bullying is wrong on every level.

I dont believe that he ever said that made it ok. He was just stating that what was said before was not the case. Some people just need to take a deep breath.
