  1. But you don't really know which direction Bubba is taking the program. He just got commitments from 4 kids that may not have had any others offers. Maybe they did maybe they didn't but nobody is reporting any. That is not to say that they won't turn out to be good players, but it is a waiting game. Wait another year or two, then you may get an accurate picture of where the program is headed.

Ultimately, the measurement is in wins/losses, in the classroom, and in the character of your players. Before you get the wins you have to have the players by establishing yourself with high school coaches and hosting camps. The area high school coaches I know tell me UND has reestablished their presence and camp numbers were way up this year. The camps are the biggest recruiting tool and Bubba and Co. will tell you.......they don't care about stars and other offers. From the inside, things are vastly improved at UND and this fall will be a key measurement. I am not expecting miracles, just hoping for them, but the improvement at UND should show on the field this fall. With the new corner from Miss St., our starting 4 in the secondary will be good, and the 3rd and long was a problem last year. Anyway, good to see 5 early commits I think the number is now. And, a certain RB may be back with the program........

  2. Thanks, Johnboy!

As for UND....I'm curious what Disterhaupt has shown coaches to justify an early leapfrog over Labat. I fully realize things could change much between now and The Pokes game. The LBs should be the strength of Schmidt's 3-4 scheme, like old times. Don't sleep on Dranka and Greely on the line, too.

Disterhaupt- eye of the tiger, it's an intangible he plays with. Nothing wrong with 3 starting outside backers to keep guys fresh.

  3. Who is by no means a fan of UND...

He was very complimentary of the current UND staff. Emphasized the home field advantage in the playoffs as the goal. I try not to like the guy, yet he's pretty likable when you talk to him.

  4. Is there any chance that Jade Lawrence will get a look at running back?

To answer this.....only if we get a bad case of the injury bug. Schmitty has him slated for OLB.

  5. That's a desperation move in my opinion.

He's an NSIC RB with decent speed.  In the BSC, he's among the slowest backs in the league.

I'd rather have him as a BSC backer with good speed.

I think he is a 4.5 guy out of high school. He could easily be a 4.4 guy coming into camp or a year into the program. I liked his size and instincts at RB in Minnesota's highest level. I think your statement is a little bearish on the kid. I've heard he is a great kid and is working his @ss off......if you want to believe his high school coach.

  6. The ones who have stayed (Olivera and Bennett) will likely be 3-4 year starters as well. I think that's a decent success rate (2/4 or 50%) considering the talent there. Keep going after Canadian footnall stars, because they know the weather and are familiar with the area. I think the Canada recruiting hotbed is a good idea for UND football.

If we lost 50% of our entire recruiting class that would be catastrophic. So I don't think 50% is a decent success rate.

I think it's a hotbed too, and I'm sure the coaches are aware of, and more so now of 1) other football options the Canadian kids have 2) eligibility requirements going forward Canada to US

  7. Per SFI: It appears Winnipeg recruit Zack Williams will not be joining the team this fall.

Maybe we need a new policy on Canadian kids. 2 out of 5-6 have bailed for one reason or another. Both Williams and Hanson could have been 3-4 year starters in my opinion.

  8. Sounds like Parks may be staying at UofM.  So, back to square one with a really thin RB core.

Some guys want to play football and would give anything for an opportunity to play on game day, while others are satisfied to walk around campus with their jersey on and sleeves rolled-up.

  9. Parks is not the answer, IMO.  I hope I am wrong and he shows something he didn't in high school.  The Gophers moved him to cornerback for a reason.

    We will see I guess.

Parks is a year removed from high school, and was under a pretty good program for a year, I'm not going to rush to judgment.  According to U of M he ran a mid 4.4 handheld.  It's not inconceivable he could shave another tenth the rest of his career.  Concerning agility, a north/south runner could be a nice change.  I'll take a north/south guy over a dancer in the hole. (Simmons)

  10. From SFI: @SiouxFootball: Appears that DE Carter Wilson of the Ottawa Sooners (Canada) has committed to #UND on his weekend visit.

A great find and get. I am declaring the D-line as solidified.

What does the staff have up it's sleeve for a corner and RB? RB a little more critical than corner.

  11. Sounds like Baker is close to a done deal.  Reason I heard he is leaving NM is that he made the two deep and wasn't awarded a scholly.  Should have 4 years to play for us assuming he does in fact join the squad.

As for the RB position - the ones I was hoping for are not in the cards but sounds like we will likely be getting one.

Coaches are excited about Baker (Park River golf event)  Maurice has connections -

Correct, things cooled on a RB from a power 5 conference.  The Minnesota kid is still being evaluated, though.

    Coaches are working hard.

  12. Correct, 2 years.  I know he's expected to be in the 2 deep for sure.  I like the addition.  Good athlete at 260 lbs, shows good awareness, takes good angles and never gives up on a play.

Hearing crickets on the RB position right now......for the most part.

Sorry about being captain obvious........I just saw the article.

  13. He redshirted at Sac state and played a year there as well. And than another year at JUCO so I would think only 2. Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

  14. At what point do we have enough linebackers?

When Schmitty burps, then we have enough.  We have 2 senior starters so maybe looking at some depth issues for next year, too.

  15. Are you really saying that NDSU's 2012 comeback win over SIU (4-7 in 2011) helped the Bison (14-1 and National Champs in 2011) establish a presence in the MVFC?

Well, you know what they say about people who live in glass houses.

    Dr. Mincer,

Should I have said "was a critical MVC game in the Bison's season"

Bison were 3-1 in conference play, SUI was 4-1 in conference play heading into the 2012 game. I guess that game didn't mean much. Done with this-
