I'd never discount the importance of winning, but I've got to believe that having a readily identifiable brand on clothing and in and around the home has a tremendous impact on kids growing up and wanting to be a part of a particular school's tradition, thereby driving enrollment and growth well into the future.
Goofy animated caricatures and mascots may not be your cup of tea, but they certainly score with a key demographic. And royalty revenue can have very tangible benefits.
If nothing else, next Christmas could be super easy for those of you with out-of-town friends and relatives (especially younger ones), all courtesy of UND's re-branding efforts.

The 50s are over. Passenger trains probably won't even exist much longer.
To the contrary, as the overall quality of the air travel experience has tanked, many people are aching for an alternative. Amtrak needs to be improved, not further marginalized.
And from the standpoint of QOL in Grand Forks, people deserve to have the best possible service.

Thanks for dredging this up. Yes, the use of #UNDPROUD by UND should be reserved for UND student athletes who finish their UND studies and obtain a UND degree. Is this a difficult concept?

As a compromise, I could also go with Thunder Ermines or War Ermines, though I don't think the adjectives are necessary. Ermines are ferocious enough as a lone noun.
In a few years, natty-less Hak can pen a tell-all autobiography entitled "Ermine Kampf."

Does the University of North Dakota really need a nickname? Do you really know the nicknames of other schools & does it really matter if they have a nickname. Most people don't know the nicknames anyhow. Ask your friends & family if they know the nicknames of the schools that we play in sports, especially hockey. I have been doing this & I am not surprised that people don't know the nicknames of the schools.

Providence - they just won the frozen four & still didn't know

But if you ask they will know that it is Minnesota Gophers, Wisconsin Badgers & of course North Dakota Fighting Sioux.
Share this with others not from UND & you might be surprised at the results. Of course I might be surprised at the people who do know them. But my point is when we play these teams you don't ever hear anyone say we are playing the Bulldogs, no we are playing Duluth. So what is the real reason for a nickname? I would like someone to explain that to me.
Wow, Gramps. Most armchair sports fans can knock out 95% or more of those. Those are all either regional rivals or top flight national powers.
Only one I can't pull out is RIT.

Well Dinosaurs used to roam all over the place so we could use that. It would be kid friendly and our logo could look just like a gas station.

For all the crap about amateurism and the long, slow, and agonizing death of college sports, I tend to think that universities should reserve their 'pride' for situations where the system actually works. Loyalty and commitment are best served by seeing students through to a degree and (almost always) exhausting years of eligibility. Athletic departments are strenghtened with each and every such outcome. Early departures cheapen the whole experience and fuel the criticism that college sports has lost its way.

Never said he was a failure in his own right; rather he was a failure for the University. The University took on a student-athlete who didn't fulfill the student-athlete bargain. What is there to be proud of? The University failed its academic mission, and by trumpeting its pride looks more like a professional athlete mill.

I'm okay with fans celebrating these type of achievements, as well as local media. Early departures are a fact of college sports; hell, not even Duke and Coach K can avoid them nowadays (3 freshmen gone within 10 days of winning a title). But does anybody else find it the least bit hypocritical or tacky for the University of North Dakota to tag this tweet #UNDProud? After all, isn't UND supposed to be concerned with academics, graduation rates, student-athletes, and all. Brock (a phenomenal success as a professional athlete) is more of a failure for the University than a success, no?
