  1. There is a forcast of rain down in Fargo the next couple of days. Im sure thats the last thing they wanted to hear...

From the sounds of things, rain/snow anywhere in the Valley is the last thing any of you guys want to hear. Stay dry guys.

  2. Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just noticed this as I was searching back.

Whoever said that it was electrical tape was correct. Every year the equipment manager spends a couple hours cutting and putting the tape on the helmets.

It's actually a strange story of how Michigan got to wear those helmets. In the late 80's, the Hartford Whalers were thinking of switching to a dark blue helmet, so one of the hockey equipment manufacturers made up a bunch of dark, blue helmets, but the Whale decided against using them, so this company had a bunch of dark blue helmets laying around. The Michigan coaches heard about it and decided to buy them all up. They figured the wings on the football helmet were so recognizable, and helped in recruiting, and figured it could do the same with hockey.(This was around 1989 when Michigan wasn't the power it is today. They had finally had their first coupel of winning seasons in a long time but hadn't been to the NCAA tournament since 1977.) So they took the blue helmets and added bright yellow electrical tape to look like the football helmets.

I believe the first game they ever wore them was at Joe Louis Arena in the CCHA tournament against Bowling Green. Michigan never announced that they were changing their helmets, so when they took the ice for pregame warm-ups, the entire arena went silent. Even the Bowling Green players that were already on the ice stopped their warm-up and just sort of stared at them for a couple minutes. I believe Michigan ended up winning the game. I think they might have just missed the NCAA tournament that season, but have made it every since then.

Yeah, thats probably how they were orginally done at first, but now I would believe that Michigan has the "Wing" painted onto the helmet. I'm pretty sure they could afford whatever custom setup that would require to have done.

I've seen a lot of HS Football helmets with the wing, some with different colors, but they all had the wing painted on. Not like at my HS where we all had to try to get our arrows on strait, or at least mostly pointing to the front. *Pretty much Florida State style arrows in black and white with red helmet, Clinton Redskins*

  3. it has nothing to do with a minority, is has to do with a race or group of people.

I agree, try to point out just how silly that all would be if the NCAA said that you couldn't use the name of any peoples, not just the Native Americans. That would mean teams like the Irish, Vikings, Colonials, Patroits, Lumberjacks, Quakers, Crucaders, Knights, Cavalears, and Lakers. Think Myles will have a fun time explaining how those are different because they're white?? Everybody would then go off and get animal names, then PETA rears its ugly head.......

  4. Thanks for the link, great site, and it's interesting listening to Brand, now I can really see how far off this guy is.

Which is one of the reasons why I passed it along, besides the shameless self promotion.:D

  5. Hey, I know its not Sioux related here, but I think you'll indulage me here for a minute. One of the guys that was down there in Hot Springs with the NCAA, has this blog called www.doubleazone.com and he talked about his impressions on the Girls D2 games there, and just so happens to mention the Monster here. He's got some serious East Coast Bias, but I don't think its anymore than what you guys are used to.

Also, I saw there that he has some sort of a pod cast with Myles Brand. My speakers are messed up, but I'm sure you guys might be a tad curious about that.

  6. You tried over there, bud! I dub you the Jane Goodall of SiouxSports.com...you actually went and lived among them and I respect that! (Bet you could use a shower!;) )

Don't forget to have him deloused as well. You don't want him spreading lice all over here. :D

  7. When you look at the original bracket, it's unfathomable that American International, the third-place team from an average league (NE-10), has managed to reach the title game. I'm sure nearly everyone assumed it would be the North Central vs. the South Central region champions (and likely UND vs. Washburn) in the semi's. This is roughly akin to the third-place team from the NCC in men's bball making it to the title game.

You guys ain't giving AIC a whole lot of credit. They had probably the best overall athletes there in the tournament. They were a very good team, and should be in the thick of things next year in Kerney.

  8. You would think GVSU would get tired of winning National Championships...

Isn't this number 3 on the year?

    GVSU 58

    AI 52

    Congratulations to the "Lady Lakers"!

Thats just our third Varsity Sport NC this year, we've also got a few other NC's for club sports, wrestling and Men's water Polo. And I would be remissed if I didn't mention an Individual NC for our women's CC star, Mandy Zemba. ;)

  9. So if Cornell comes back to win UND might have to play Michigan and Minnesota to make the Frozen Four. Not sure if that is good or bad. While I'd love UND to get to end both the Wolverines and Gophers seasons, there isn't a much tougher road to the Frozen Four.

Yeah, but you'll have them on your home Ice. If you had to take them on back to back to win, no other place I would want to play them at. Just be sure that they just happen to make sure there's plenty of student tickets available.

  10. Fletcher checks Oshie, and Fletcher goes down. Have to love the kid!

I think they mention the story about Matt Green and how he got hit by that Jeep and the Jeep coming out the worse of it.
