  1. That's why I am nervous. ;) But if UND got an older goalie from the Canadian ranks I would feel less nervous.

The minute Grieco left I felt anxious. After listening to dave starman on CSTV he basically said that no one except

C.C. was really interested in Bachman. Wow would a goalie like him look good in green.

You never know though...he could end up being very streaky. We'll see how CC finishes the year. Bachman could be the next Isaac Reichmuth. :D

  2. So Oshie without the "A" for the rest of the season. I'd say that's sending a message. Greene didn't lose the "C" when he got a DUI. Oshie responded well last week, hopefully that continues. He's definitely a character guy.

  3. Not sayng that stafford doesn't have skills, he does, I just never saw him as a leader. Hell, Kaip is a leader, Porter was a leader, Greene was a leader, and none of those guys ever got handed a puck in a clutch situation (like a penalty shot) and were told "now go win this thing for us." My point is that you can be a leader and not have the best "skills" and vise versa. Unless, of course, your name happen to be Johnny Toews, then you have it all. Hell, Johhny Toews can even drop th "f bomb" in a tv interview and get away with it.

I definitely agree with all of that. My original point was that Wheeler's college career looks a little like Stafford's did. The difference is in the numbers. When Stafford was called on to play a bigger role in the team's offense he did. His first years he had guys like Parise, Bochenski, and Murray to deflect to. Wheeler had a similar situation with Potulny, Irmen, and more recently Okposo. Without those guys the true test will be whether Wheeler can carry the team and boost his production. Because at this point, the Gophers need an offensive leader pretty badly.

  4. At Alfond Arena in Maine, UND was looking for a big win to start the season. Overtime, player covers puck in the crease and Hak gets to choose any player to take the penalty shot. He chooses (or somebody chooses, if it wasn't Hak) Stafford. Stafford buries it with a wrister below the stick-side elbow. That clutch performance shows a lot of maturity and skill that players can look up to.

There are many other examples, but his production was way up that 3rd year. From my perspective, Stafford gained a lot of poise and leadership that year. Maybe others see it differently.

  5. I don't think Wheeler is any farther behind than Stafford was when he was a Junior. The only difference might be that Stafford turned a big corner as a JR, and started leading the team. Both were very high picks with similar builds.

I think Wheeler will be great based on his size and hands. Unfortunately for guys like me, you can't teach size.

Wheeler will be fine. We'll see if he takes the reigns and puts the team on his back during the stretch. They sure need it.

  6. I recommend standing room tickets...if you don't mind standing. The way the arena is setup, the standing room tickets are closer than the "upper-level". It's basically a split bowl, and the standing room people get a wall in between levels on the main walking concourse. It's fun to stand there all game, but if you need seats, that's not the way to go. The tickets (last time I checked) for standing room are only $12.

  7. I completely agree with starting strong and finishing strong. But, would you trade Blais' last few years (starting in 2002) for Hak's first few? I wouldn't. I remember 2002-2003, the team came out like gang-busters, something like 14-0-1 overall. But that team stumbled hardcore in the 2nd half and playoffs due to streaky (read: crappy) goaltending and scoring. Then came Ferris Wheel St. and Chris Kunitz. I'm sure we all remember.

I definitely don't think it's over. Last year's team got 3rd place, and there was less than or about the same amount of parity in the league. CC is riding a hot *Freshman* goalie. It can be done, but who knows how the 2nd half will shake out. UND still has not played the two worst teams in the league (AA and MSU). We'll see what happens. Just start turning the "should have wons" into the "did wins" and we'll be good to go.

  8. Honestly, with the way the tournaments are setup, I think teams are putting more emphasis on the NCAA tourney than the conference regular season title. The regular season winner gets no autobid. Plus, if you look at the teams that have won the MacNaughten, how many have gone on to win the NCAA title in the same year recently. Denver comes to mind...maybe Wisconsin, but I think UofM took that one. It's rare to see a team start hot and continue through the year. So many teams are buying into the "peak at the right time" mentality.

Last year I don't believe they had any first half sweeps (at home anyway) either. Plus, they were swept by crap teams on more than one occasion. The thing that encourages me about this UND team is the way they look when they ARE on. This team has looked extremely dynamic and poised.

The big thing to work on is playing with a deficit. At this point that giant goose egg when trailing after 2 is needing to go away. The Sioux flat out play at another level when leading.

  9. I'm not sure I know what you mean when you say the problem with the list is that it goes completely by the teams they play. Of course it does.

The reality is that we should sweep a Mankato at home but traditionally we haven't or at least it seems that way. I feel that we have the toughest league schedule this year. The two top teams we only play one series against are Wisconsin and Colorado College. But that is offset by only playing a single series with UAA and Mankato. So we need to take care of business against the teams that are not as talented as we are. No more making their goalie look like he's a superstar.

Haha, I was actually thinking of something else and not paying attention to what I was replying with. I don't think it's unrealistic to expect a sweep of some of the teams you predicted splits against. I guess I agree with you on the consistent play requirement of NC teams. Good teams that will be top-4 in the country in the end will find a way to sweep other good mid to bubble teams.

Therefore, if UND wants to separate the veteran team this season from the younger teams of the last few years, they will have to start playing more consistent. Sweeps of teams like UofM (not as good as years past), UNH, MSU, and St. Cloud will help. Based on the way they've played so far, it's not out of the question to look for a single-digit loss season.

One thing worth noting is how they come back from a tough loss. When I say tough loss, I mean a game that they played well enough to win, and didn't. In the last few years, the team might have gotten swept by Wisco or Tech after losing a heart-breaker. This year, they completely blew out Tech, and got the bounces in Wisco to beat them. As Hak said, basically only one bad game. Once the team starts playing consistently, those great efforts will all become wins. But the fact that they are battling back in the next game is very encouraging.

  10. Jean-Phillipe, and the rest of the team will be fine. The problem with your list is that it goes completely by the teams they play. Why couldn't they sweep more of those series? I agree that they should, and believe they will.

Only 9 games in against some great teams...definitely room for improvement, but for all teams, not just UND.

  11. I'm sorry, but against a team like aa, or mankato, I'll take a Kyle Radke in the lineup before a Martens or a Miller. Simply because of the physical presence he brings.

This part I agree with. Miller was brought in as a smaller finesse player who can score. Well, he hasn't really ever done that for UND, except maybe for a 3 game stretch last year. If Radke plays with his head, I agree that he should be in the lineup.

I don't have numbers, but I'm doubting that Prp or Archie were ever left at home for a road trip as seniors. Hak is clearly trying to send a message, so I'm with Siouxman in support of that. Lets see what comes of it.

  12. If you ask most teams, they'd probably say that UND has enough grit without Radke in the lineup.

My only beef with Radke is that he takes dumb penalties. Kaip is an enforcer, and he doesn't take really dumb penalties with that much consistency. There are a lot of players for UND that play tough and clean. Jonsey is another that takes bad penalties too often. With the roster full of players that could contribute, Hak can choose players based on practice or who can help the team the most during the game.

I'm sure Radke will get his chance again, especially with a pretty ineffective Martens and Miller. When he does get back in the lineup, maybe he'll cool off a bit and contribute in a positive way. I know he can, he does have talent for sure.

2006-2007 109 penalty mins...almost 40 more than the nearest UND player

  13. city/state born in and reside in now? Grand Forks, ND - Now live in Fargo...(ugh that's kind of depressing, though I do get FSSN)

Did you attend UND? Class of 2006

    Favorite current player? Duncan, Frattin

Favorite all-time Sioux player(s)? Jason Blake, Travis Zajac, Brady Murray, David Hoogstien

Favorite all-time NON Sioux player/team? I like Duluth, not sure on players... I guess I liked Marty Sertich and Petr Sejna

Are you a season ticket holder? I was as a student. Now I have to actually fork out a lot of $...so I watch on FSSN and get tix whenever possible.

  14. I don't know where he's from, but when you play for an elite team you have to earn your spot in the lineup. You aren't just given one because you were drafted. I don't pretend to know how Hak makes lineup decisions, but I definitely buy into practice performance. It is probably not the same with goalies, however, because as a coach you'd want to ride the hot hand. Right now JPL has let in something like 7 goals in 7 games with 4 shutouts. This ridiculous start will obviously not continue through the year, but right now I don't blame Hak for not playing Grieco. Maybe he would have gotten a game against Wisc or UMD.

I'm sorry to see Anthony go, as it would have been nice to have him available. But he probably should be in MJ if he wants guaranteed playing time. Nothing's guaranteed in the WCHA.
