  1. With UND confirming Shields and Coleman leaving, still sticking to this?

Yes. The other two aren't transferring, which is why they aren't "official" yet. Of course, it's possible they change their mind, but I'm sticking with what I heard until I hear otherwise.

  2. Quite shocking and relieved not to see:

    Running the ball

    Blocking

    Tackling

If Bubba thinks those areas are solid, I like where this team is headed!!

The areas you mentioned will ALWAYS be the fundamentals of UND football, but the three I mentioned were brought up by Bubba in the context that they were not done well last fall. Therefore, hoping for improvement there during spring ball.

When you have all 4 starting linebackers retuning from 2014, including the monster that is Will Ratelle, I think tackling will be just fine in 2015.

  3. It's just frustrating that a certain level of success was demanded at one time, but apparently not anymore.

Absolutely, it's frustrating. The expectations for football and men's basketball are a definite problem. More of the revenue generated by men's hockey needs to be distributed to men's basketball and football, and not pumped unnecessarily back into men's hockey.

  4. Factors for redshirt: Academics, Age, Size, Playing Time. In no particular order. The fact they had so many guards on the roster already, probably played a role in him not playing. Crandall probably could have played, but why waste a year when the season was going to be bad anyway? Age/ Size was a concern, when he came here he was young and needed to get into weight room. Again, might as well use the down season to train and get bigger and better. Academically, I don't know the situation, but maybe it was easier to let him focus on being a student-athlete :) and get acclimated to college without worrying about playing. I know what he did in High School was impressive, and his game should translate well to the college level

Your factors are all correct, but they didn't apply in Brian Jones' mindset when deciding to burn the redshirt of Cashman and Shields, who played few minutes.

Also, to say the play of guards such as de Rouen and Antwi prevented the play of Crandall is quite telling. It tells me Crandall is a freshman athlete in a common scenario in that he needs time to develop. Fans should not expect too much of Crandall in his RSFr. season.

  5. I don't understand this either. Basketball seems to have been treated as a complete afterthought under Faison. Maybe this would have been more understandable if Gino were still a.d., but somebody with Faison's background? It seems odd.

The unnamed factors and pressures at UND will always point to hockey. Faison appears to have fell victim to the "culture" of UND athletics.

  6. I'll bite...

First tho, congrats on being able to attend the game(s). I'm sure it was a blast to be in that environment, enjoying the wins. Not a fan of hockey myself, but enjoyed watching the games with my father, especially the hits. Love the physical play of UND.

Onto MBB in its current state...

This season is over so...It's a new season! With new players; that are explosive, energetic, and work extremely hard. As well as a few that are "winners."

Unfortunately, last year's team finished near the bottom, where the consensus picked them to finish. It was not a fun trip to the bottom, watching the team struggle with few positives to enjoy. Considering the title of the thread, maybe its unfortunate Coach is back. But there was little chance of him being fired, for reasons already listed. Fortunately, some kids are gone, and we get to see Hooker after another year of progression. Hopefully, find out if Crandall is everything they say, and watch Seales come in and contribute right away. With the guys that are here and coming in, it should be a turnaround season. And it should be successful. If not, then I would certainly understand, even expect a change. (However, I question this administration's desire to have a top MBB program, but that can be discussed in another thread.) I hope this helps turn your sights to the upcoming season.

If you are going to Boston, enjoy. Either way, GO SIOUX!!! or GO UND!!! whichever you prefer

Expecting too much out of Crandall. For those banking on his "big-time" contributions next season, then why wasn't he on the court this season? Especially when Shields -- who played very few minutes -- got his shirt pulled.

With de Rouen and Tyler departing, UND will heavily rely on Hooker and Seales next season, along with Shanks and Cashman. I don't see an above 0.500 season next year, unfortunately. The attrition of this year's roster, along with the 3 upper classmen last season who occupied roster spots but not minutes on the floor, are the unfortunate results of relying on transfers and not developing high school players. Jones needs to get much better at this, or else UND needs a new MBB leader who can recruit and develop.

  7. Logical post.... Some folks cannot understand that the flagship school in Texas paid their basketball coach 2.2 million a year Top Ten NCAA D1 Salary... UND pays 100k. A Bottom ten NCAA D1 Salary.... For a TOP TEN salary in the NCAA..... having a sub 500 record in conference play is not good. Barnes conference winning % same... as Jones last 3 years....Again I am right as I have said all along conference play greatly trumps non conference play...no matter how much a handful of uninformed people do not like it

The fact UND MBB is led by a coach only worth 100K is the problem. UND needs to up their salary and find an actual winner for the HC position.

As for conference record, you have to have a decent sample size. Barnes had that with 17 years of coaching; Jones only has had 3 seasons as HC in the BSC. Nevertheless, in those three seasons, Jones has a losing conference record, and I'm not necessarily advocating a 4th BSC season for Jones and UND.

  8. Just wondering what you base this on - personal opinion - fine. There is a difference between someone saying "Yah they're a ND school so I think it's good for the state" and saying they are an SU football fan. I highly doubt that 50% of rabid UND fans hold the same level of passion for SU.

Go around the REA during a game and ask the heavy spenders (suites and bar seats) if they are NDSU football fans and/or not UND football fans? The number is quite scary.

Where I sit in the Ralph, the entire row consists of self-proclaimed "UND hockey and NDSU football fans".

The good news is sustained success, in the near future, of UND football would go a long way to change that.

  9. So Hammer was stroking Kliman for being at the UND hockey game......isn't Kliman just reaching out to a portion of his fan base??

Agree. Half of the UND hockey fans in Scheels Arena are NDSU football fans.....

Dispute it if you want, it's just the unfortunate truth.

Glad Bubba is about to bring a much needed DI winning football program to UND.

Appears 2015 UND football team will again have its work cut out for it offensively, but will only improve defensively. Considering a relatively weak 2015 conference schedule and a more experienced squad, 2015 UND football season should be a winning one. Spring ball is important for depth development and a look at winter work-out results. Bubba has UND on the right track to sustained success.

  11. The players see the writing on the wall; they're not blind.

Just as the majority of fans on this site have pointed to, UND men's basketball needs a change at the top in order to be competitive and build some excitement back into the program, like Bubba did with football.

  12. Seems pretty obvious which ones to me, even with already seeing the names. At least one is pretty obvious anyways.

Was this reported anywhere btw or just word of mouth?

Got it from a conversation with someone. Source is reliable and from the media.

  13. Any idea if that was the players choice or a coaches decision?

Edit: looks like you edited your post and removed the names...

Yes. I don't want to be too revealing, as I'm not too sure on the details. Just know they won't be returning. One is personal while I believe the other is performance-based.
  14. Not a theory. It's a culture change. Sicatoka has it right. Your philosophy is that we try and get to be competitive with the AC. But you have also crowned them king. My thought is that we have the mindset that what we do in the classroom, every set we do in the weight room, every sprint and drill in practice, every play in practice, every repetition is geared to maintain a culture and focus of nothing less than a maximum effort and success for what we are doing as a Sioux athlete. The goal is a national championship and the AC game will take care of itself. Right now they are the king of nothing except for those who revel in past glories. We make the future by what we do today. If you crown them king you may be beaten before you start.

There's a fine line between confidence and arrogance: UND must be confident that they can beat NDSU and others on their BSC schedule, but it would be foolish to be so arrogant that one cannot recognize NDSU is a consecutive 4-time FCS national champion.

Recognition of the "King" in FCS football may actually be what's needed in order for UND to rally and pull the upset in September; beating NDSU would be a noteworthy accomplishment for the 2015 UND football squad.

Lastly, there's a difference between a pivotal game and a must-win game. UND doesn't *HAVE* to beat NDSU in September, but a good showing would be pivotal in that UND would build momentum that could then be carried into the BSC schedule. Bubba has made it no secret that the teams number 1 goal each and every season is to be Big Sky Conference champions.

  15. The pivotal game is the next game.

"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing." -- some guy named Lombardi

    Can't argue with that.

  16. We need to move away from the mindset of comparing everything with the AC. Too many of you folks haven't noticed they no longer worry about us, they concern themselves about championships. Anyone who thinks beating the AC is the pivotal game is wrong. It's a rivalry game. Just like last years MBB. Anyone think that made our season? What was much more important was we made it to the conference championship game. Because we didn't win it the season was mediocre.

Anyone think the Ag School folks think last year was anything other than a win in the NCAA tourney rather than a trouncing by the Sioux?

A win against the AC is only good if you think it important to give their fans crap. It might shut some of them up but not many and not for long. The pivotal game is the game we are playing and until that is won the next game no matter who it is doesn't matter. Recruits will notice championships and playoffs. If we beat the AC and don't make playoffs it doesn't mean much.

This all sounds good and by theory is correct, but it's more difficult than it sounds.

NDSU is presently the king of football and basketball in the region, and UND beating NDSU --particularly in football-- will go a long way in building confidence and putting together a championship-type season. UND football needs to gain some regional momentum and the NDSU game is one such opportunity.

UND fans will move away from NDSU comparisons once UND shows the ability to win DI conference and national championships.

  17. The pivotal game is vs. Idaho State. That is a game that can be won but is vs. a Top 5 Big Sky team. The game vs. NDSU means very little in the grand scheme of the schedule as UND will be a huge underdog, about the same as the Wyoming game. Take emotion and passion out and its another non-conference game.

Still is very important for confidence purposes that UND plays well versus NDSU. If UND doesn't show up and gets handled, the team won't hear the end of it all season. That will hurt confidence and negatively affect their performance going forward. Make no mistake about it, NDSU game is a big one.
