  1. Isn't the LB position already our strength right now? Seems like it might make sense to keep a scholarship open for a position that we are in more need of help? I realize you need depth, but if he isn't going to start maybe another transfer player at another position could have pushed to start. I'm sure they know what they are doing though and felt he would be a good fit for what the team needs.

Depth is key, but the transfer could possibly play starting fullback and be a key special teams contributor also.

    Plenty of spots open...

  2. Sorry, but that's not good enough. Need 8 wins to make the playoffs and that's the goal. PLAYOFFS. Anything less doesn't cut it.

    "...at least..."

Considering where this program has been in DI, don't get greedy. Nevertheless, I perfectly understand what it takes to be considered a top FCS program (there's one just 80 miles south of GF), and I think UND may be on their way.

Also, the actual goal that Bubba has set out is to win the Big Sky Conference every season.

  3. They have tried big promo things in the past many times. Usually it turns out to be 40 degrees with a 30 mph wind or raining. Not their fault. The team just needs to win games.

Won't have to wait long for that. UND wins at least 6 in 2015, giving UND football first BSC winning season.

Although I have been real critical of coaches in the past, particularly Mussman and Jones, I have so much faith and have been so impressed with Coach Bubba and Schmidty it's unreal. I honestly think their open-mindness and great fit for the university will translate into great things for UND football.

  4. I hope they put a little more effort into promoting the spring game and at least put a little thought into pre-game activities - last year was less than pitiful as far as publicity and support (I realize it was a transition year, lots of things changing, but the promotion is done by the athletic department and where they choose to put their energy.)

    No doubt.

UND's athletic department has definitely had their fair share of priority issues.

  5. Nebraska just set a record with 76,881 at the spring game, I know we aren't going to have 13,000 at the spring game but hopefully a good crowd means faith is being restored back into the football program.

    Outdoors at Memorial....

I doubt we see more than a thousand. Should be a fun game to watch though, as Bubba definitely has UND football on the rise.

  6. There usually is more turnover in football due to numbers. And the change in philosophy, and accountability/discipline. With basketball, if this all comes down the way we want, and if Jones is let go, it would be hard to see any of those kids leaving. With that potential, would be tough transfer for player.

And I think next year is going to be a good year also. Not writing it off in anyway. But the few years after should be teams that get to the NCAA tourney.

I'll believe it when I see it. Sounds way too good to be true right now.

  7. Whether you like Jones or not , if we are able to land Wheeler we would have one heck of a group of players coming in next year. It will sure be fun to see how everything unfolds.

It's not a matter of "liking" Jones, I just don't think Jones has the demeanor and ability to coach UND in critical moments of a basketball game.

Therefore, UND will need to have a very talented roster to overcome the coaching shortcomings of Jones.

  8. Is this Prom '15 or what? Are those white cummerbunds that Wisconsin's wearing? WTF, Adidas?

They're pretty goofy looking, but they're not as bad as some make them out to be.

Adidas makes uniforms that are just fine. Heck, many Adidas sponsored programs have a nice, traditional look, including Wisconsin when not wearing these goofy ones.

  9. Well, one of the two potential FBS transfers that I'm aware of they are hoping to land definitely does not add to the size of our roster - but he would definitely add speed. :)

    Oh, please do tell more...

  10. Kind of what I was getting at. If you say you support both schools but only cheer for UND Hockey and NDSU football then I would consider you a front running bandwagon ND college sports fan, not a fan of both schools. Not saying it is wrong just calling it what it is.

A LOT of people out there of this bandwagon type; "UND hockey and NDSU football fans".

To me, these fans oppose UND football and basketball; therefore, they aren't true UND fans. They support UND hockey only because NDSU does not have a hockey team. This doesn't help out UND athletics as a whole (football and basketball included).

  11. Weren't we always at the maximum 85 players/63 combined scholarships? There was no reason not to be, this is just common sense.

Size as in mass, weight, physique, build, strength, girth, muscle

  12. From all reports, it appears Bubba is increasing the size of UND's roster. This is necessary for UND to be a competitive D1 football program. I think Bubba recognized this immediately and has addressed it. I think UND will be more physical running the football this season which will bode well for the offensive production.

Edit: By size, I mean average weight of players by position, particularly skill positions (RBs and DBs)

  13. Ive think youve lost it son.

Those were the utmost die hard UND fans around. There was only two ways to get tickets. Be a UND champions member or wait outside scheels arena since 430 am like me and that was for only 150 out of 5,000.

UND football is in the midst of a very promising spring football session and you choose to comment on the attandance of a UND hockey game a week after the fact? To each their own I guess, but you're really only defending "die hard" UND hockey fans, not UND football fans.

I could care less what the actual fan loyalties were/are right now. Right now I only care about the future of UND football, which looks promising. With a return to winning for UND football, fandom for UND football will undoubtedly increase.

  14. These comments are far from the truth but really close to delusional.

If not NDSU football fans, then UND hockey-only fans were of the majority.

There's a difference between UND fans and UND hockey-only fans. UND hockey-only fans mock UND football more than NDSU fans do.

The bandwagon fans require winning before they just up and leave NDSU football for UND football.

  15. I like Duke Johnson from Miami and David Cobb from Minnesota in the 3rd/4th range I've seen Cobb tweet for the Vikings to just let it happen so I guess he wants to stay in MN. I wouldn't be surprised to see them taking an RB no matter what in the draft but depending on what happens with AP will play a big role into when they take an RB. If AP isn't gonna play in MN they will probably take one in the top 3 rounds while even if he does end up coming back and playing in MN I could see them taking a RB in the 6th/7th range if they want to replace Asiata who I believe is in the last year of his deal.

I'm interested to see what the Vikes will do in round 1. They still could use upgrades at a number of spots. I really wouldn't mind if they trade down this year and pick up a few more picks but if they stay at #11 some players I like who could/should be available are CB-Trae Waynes, S-Landon Collins, and WR-Devante Parker.

As for your 1st round favorites, I like CB, OL, or even DE. Considering what Spielman likes to do in the draft, I certainly could see the Vikes trading down so they could get two second round picks or two third round picks in this years draft.

A favorite of HC Zimmer is UCONN CB Byron Jones, a projected late 1st Rd corner. He would be a nice 1st rd target if the Vikes wanted to trade down, but I certainly would be fine with selecting Iowa OL Brandon Scherff, MSU CB Trae Waynes, Alabama WR Amari Cooper, Clemson DE Vic Beasley, or Nebraska DE Randy Gregory in the 1st round at No.11, as they all have top 10 talent and would be great picks based on star potential.

Something to watch for: Vikes might not take a 1st rd receiver because they are looking at Missouri/Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham. The guy has top 10 talent but will be available in rd 2, maybe even rd 3. Trading back would afford the Vikes an opportunity to draft him with an acquired extra pick.

  16. .

Vikes may look at Crockett but it would have to be a late round (6 or 7) or undrafted. I have heard the Vikings are seriously looking at a RB as high as Rd 2, which would include Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), Duke Johnson (Miami), and, even later, David Johnson (Northern Iowa). Of course, the Boise State and U of Minnesota running backs are both at play also.

I think Northern Iowa's David Johnson is easily a better prospect that NDSU's Crockett (better strength and speed). Then again, whether or not Spielman picks a RB may just come down to the how the draft pans out and who's the best player available. Vikings honestly believe Adrian Peterson will be back.

  17. My main reason for disappointment is not entirely on metrics, but rather the fact that I think there were better QBs available at the time the Vikings chose Bridgewater, namely Carr.

Of course, I hope he proves me wrong. Some analysts have compared him to Aaron Rodgers, and although I think those guys are crazy/nuts/gone, I hope they end up being right.

Thankfully, Bridgewater proved me wrong, and I'm happy for that.

  18. Very nice update, thanks!

I certainly think this year's club will be better both physically and mentally relative to last year's team. Definitely expecting UND in 2015 to have their first winning season as a member of the BSC.

  19. Jones will have immense difficulty replacing Shay with a quality assistant. The writing is on the wall.

Absolutely. The inevitable will occur next year this time and it's just an absolute shame that UND and Faison have to wait and subject the program to another losing season.

  20. Again, I will wait to judge what our program is willing to pay when our current staff earns a salary increase or our current staff is replaced. Right now we don't just pay more to the current staff because everyone else is doing it.

I think it's fair to say that UND athletics and Faison do not have financial resources to buy out Jones right now (at least not without cutting the hockey expenses some), so what indicates Faison would even be able to increase the coaching salary for MBB? I would like to think it is possible for UND to increase the MBB coaching salary pool by at least 50k, but that requires some commitment from Faison and the business operations, and I'm not too sure that exists right now.

  21. East Tennessee State board is predicting that Shay will be joining Steve Forbes' new staff down there. Forbes was an assistant at Wichita. Him and Shay worked together at JuCo Northwest Florida and were both on Pearl's staff at Tennessee.

Don't blame him for leaving; everyone else is doing it.
