  1. Bohl's defense at NDSU never really had big defensive ends either. His system looks for the DEs to get up field and cause havoc. Average sized but quick DE is more valued.

A huge key to Bohl's system, and the Tampa 2, is the MLB and the safeties. NDSU has had those three positions very solid for at least the last five years and that's been a big part of their success. How well Bohl's Wyoming MLB and safeties understand the Tampa 2 system and responsibilities will determine how successful that defense is.

I agree with your assessment of Bohl's version of the Tampa 2 defense. On that note, the two-deep that Wyoming just released has their two starting safeties as freshman and their starting MLB as a player from Germany who played TE last season. Given that information, I don't expect Wyoming to field anything close to resembling a dominating defense.

Although an FBS transfer or two this summer could change things, UND's offense is going to be average at best this season. The key, like Geaux_Sioux said, is how UND goes about moving it. If they can run the ball downhill, it will compliment UNDs defense well enough that it could lead to several wins.

I expect the UND-Wyoming game to be close. Wyoming is by no means a top Mountain West Conference program yet, so UND should be able to compete.

  2. If we can run at them with success then speed doesn't mean anything. And it is Wyoming we're talking about, they aren't exactly world beaters. It will be a different animal when we play Utah and Washington.

O-Line is still a work in progress. Do you remember how well UND ran the ball versus Wyoming's conference mate San Jose State last season? Not very good. Point is, UND's offense did nothing last year to make me believe - hands down - that UND will be able to just "pound" the football down Wyoming's throat. UND will need a whole lot of offensive line improvement for that. I hope UND's running attack/O-line will be much improved this season, but I'll believe it when I see it.

As for UND's defense, I do believe that UND will be able to handle Wyoming's offense for the most part. But how many points will UND's offense be able to muster?

  3. Wow they have small LBs. Their ends aren't very big either. I hope our hogs can push them around.

Also have to think that having a tall cornering Harris will come in handy against their 6'6" WR.

Don't get too confident; they likely have a ton of speed, which works out nicely in the Tampa 2 defense they run.

Big thing will be depth: does Wyoming have more depth than us? Most likely, but it may be closer than one would think. If UND can grab a couple FBS transfers and further develop their depth, it will bode well in this matchup.

  4. The number one proirity (which isn't going to break the bank) is getting rid of the old Big Sky logo and replace it with the new one. UND never played in the Big Sky when it had that logo. It is embarasing to see it on our court when every other school has updated their court. Come on REA/Betty/UND AD. This isn't that hard!!

Well, I'd say most fans and recruits would notice some nice, new video boards before a conference logo change. To even compare the conference logo appearance to video boards is quite ridiculous; they aren't even in the same category in terms of financial requirement.

The UND athletic department should just update the logo appearance on the court regardless. It shows the lack of commitment on the part of the department.

Eventually, there needs to be video boards that could be used to display scores, player stats, highlights/replays, and advertisements. This is a must considering the upgrade it would provide the Betty and the game-time atmosphere.

  5. I've heard that he's unlikely. Though I know they are targeting a few CBs that are transferring.

CB is definitely one of those positions of need that could use instant help. We all saw first-hand last season what a good transfer can do for that position (Alex Tillman).

  6. If it was going to happen with Hansen, now isn't a terrible time. Gives time to potentially find a FBS transfer or someone to fill that spot.

Good point. Bring in another FBS transfer that can help out NOW; need that at RB, CB, WR, DL, or even OL. By no means is UND set at most positions. Perhaps even an FBS QB if they could be lucky enough to find one? Still can't believe how lucky UND was in 2012 to get Braden Hanson.

  7. @tommillergf: UND loses one from '15 class RT @FarhanLaljiTSN

LB Troy Hansen from Edmonton has signed with #UBCFootball. Had earlier signed a LOI with UND

    Ouch

    Damn

  8. The Sharp situation makes me think UND knows their is real good chance they will be ringing in another RB and they probably know who it will be. Did Sharp leave or did we give him a good hint that he probably was going to be low on the list of RB's for playing time. Who left who? I have always had the feeling he wasn 't going to be good enough and the coaching staff didn't think he was in their long term plans.

Agree with you. Bubba and Maurice have been looking for another feature RB via FBS transfer for some time now. And the team desperately needs one, considering both the depth and the team's run first philosophy.

  9. Sounds like they expect a FBS RB to be visiting in the next couple weeks. Hopefully they are the right fit as this position group is now dangerously thin.

Considering Nevermann as ineligible in 2015, that leaves UND with only Arrington and Norberg at RB. Hard to include any of the incoming true freshmen in that group as far as being main contributors, although I think Brady Oliveria will play right away. UND definitely needs an FBS RB transfer, maybe even two.

  10. As much as people are upset with Bohl for not signing the player's release, I'm not sure any coach would respond any differently in the same situation.

Given UND fans are excited to get this player on the field, my guess is he would be a contributor in the game against Wyoming. No coach is going to want a player leave, only to turn around and hurt your team in the first game of the year.

It sounds like he was a walk-on for Wyoming, but for all UND fans know Wyoming was counting on him to play a role on their team and may be a bit salty that he decided to go to a team Wyoming plays.

    As 'Woden' said: Vernon Adams

Not to mention, what UND does over their entire 2015 season does not affect Wyoming's season. UND is not in Wyoming's conference, nor is UND even in the same subdivision. Perhaps deny the kid the ability to play against Wyoming to open the season, but do not jeopardize his entire season when he won't even be playing in the FBS.

  11. I also think it's significant that the kid was a walk-on at Wyoming. I've heard of schools refusing to grant releases of scholarship players to another school within the same conference. But I can't imagine this situation happens very often--refusing to release a walk-on so he can transfer to a lower level.

I think a possible compromise is that the NCAA waives the requirement that Wyoming has to sign a Release, but that Nevermann isn't eligible to play in the Wyoming game.

That makes the most sense. A single non-conference/non-divison game should not decide a player's eligibility for an entire season.
  12. Bubba's comments on the radio yesterday made it sound like they were still appealing it but not 100% and not sure how successful they will be if that is the case.

They better appeal it and it best be ruled in UND's favor! For crying out loud, the kid is transferring from an FBS school to an FCS school!!!

Yes, Wyoming is on UND's schedule, but Wyoming is "suppose" to win the game, hence the payout to UND. Ultimately, the game is non-conference and non-divison. To deny a kid an opportunity to play because a non-division former team is on the schedule is ridiculous. The rule is designed for FBS to FBS transfer situations, and only that!

  13. Bubba was on Tim and Swyg this morning. Sounds like pretty much the whole team plus around 10 incoming players are going to be in town for the summer. Glad to see those numbers at where they need to be.

    About time.
  14. In looking at the RB stats yesterday.....looks like in total they averaged about 1 yard/rush. We still have lots of improvement needed there, if that is suppose to be our bread and butter....running the ball, 1 yard per rush won't get it done. At least they are going up against one of the best rush defenses so they probably won't face one tougher on the rush. I realize some guys were out etc., and I think we will be better than last year but it still concerns me about not being able to get the push needed up front if we are going to primarily be a rushing team.

UND's rushing defense may be the best in the FCS for the 2015 season. Given that, UND may be able to rush the ball just fine against most teams they play this season.

Just wishful thinking, perhaps. I sure hope UND's offense is a physical, ground and pound attack. If effective, the offense will go along with the defense just perfect.

  15. QB play was a toss up .... No real clear standout.

    # 5 is Nevermann hits the line hard and never gives up.

Not much opportunity given to Arrington today.

Several QB/ running back exchanges looked awkward and caused plays to blow up

    1st defense looks incredible.

Not much of a drop off with the 2nd defense. Great depth.

    Good crowd on hand.

2015 UND football is going to be about defense and 14-10 score games if UND is going to be successful. Still hopeful that the running game and play-action passing game will develop more from now until the start of the season.

  16. Based on what I saw last year Mollberg is the best option with the most potential right now. I like Studsruds potential in a few years, but an ideal scenario would be Mollberg and Bartels take the reigns this year and Studsrud can hopefully get his redshirt back.

I have no idea if Mollberg will recovery fully from that injury, but based on last year I like Mollberg. He was really just starting to find his stride when he got hurt and I think he has the best arm of them all. Hopefully Joe can recover 100% by summer workouts and be good to go come fall.

Heidlebaugh is coming from Class A football in ND. I love his potential long term, but he needs to redshirt. I know Bubba is really excited about Brad's potential.

Until Mollberg starts practicing and can take contact, you never know. Sure hope Mollberg comes back looking great, but I doubt it's that easy. As of now, with only 2 guys competing on the field, it's Bartels. Studsrud isn't very far behind, however.
  17. Push comes to shove who would you start?

    Right now, Bartels.

But Studsrud, Mollberg, and even Heidlebaugh deserve the opportunity in the fall with a full compliment of WRs to try and prove themselves.

  18. Iverson has been playing some TE to go along with FB

They are trying to find ways to move Fiedler around outside of just the TE spot to create mismatches

The WR group has been the group that has made the most strides and surprised the coaches the most despite the injuries they've had. Cerriteno, who had quite a few drops last year, got some new prescription contacts and it has made a world of difference for him, catching almost everything now.

To no one's surprise, the OL is still up in the air and the QB battle is far from decided.

QB battle is worse than far from decided....

Neither QB this spring has looked good; a lot of missed throws. We all should hope the offensive line and running backs have improved running the ball (which fortunately I think they have) or else the offense will be atrocious once again.

  19. SFI also believes the transfer to be FB/LB Jephete Matilus from the University of Minnesota. Should be able to play either FB or LB for UND, although SFI believes LB. Considering Kostich recruited/aided in his transfer and is familiar with him, I have to believe Matilus will be present on all special teams.

  20. Any more and they'll start chanting gopher rejects when we play ndsu

We have 2 former UM players, not rejects.

They are both very capable DI football players that wanted more playing time. To term them as rejects is absolutly asinine.

  21. Based on what has been seen so far this spring, where do we see roster and depth holes that will need to be filled with freshman. Who will likely be making an immediate impact when they come in this fall? AND are we still looking at any potential FBS transfers?

Skill spots on both offense and defense are the most open, or as you put it, are depth holes. That is, the RB/WR/DB types are the most likely to come in as true freshmen and play. The offensive linemen in the 2015 class are real talented, but I don't think any see playing time as a true freshman. Same goes for the defensive line and linebackers, although a case could be made for a true freshman linebacker to play some as a special teams guy. With that, I think the RB/WR/CB players are most likely to get a look at playing as a true Fr.

The staff is always looking for an FBS transfer if it's the right fit. Definitely think at least 1 FBS transfer joins the club after spring ball, likely an offensive skill player, although any player that makes the team better is a possibility.

  22. The only games I feel confident about putting in the win column are Drake and possibly UNC. Our program is no where near the point where we can start predicting that certain games can be classified as a win. Is Bubba doing some good things things with the program? Yes. But until it translates to victories on the field, I will continue to be cautiously optimistic. Remember, we lost to perennial cellar dweller Weber State at home last year.

Nothing wrong with being cautiously optimistic, but I think you're being a bit too pessimistic here. UND football will have better depth and talent in 2015 relative to 2014, so there's no reason one can't assume UND football will be better in 2015. I certainly do not want to guarantee something like the playoffs, but barring major injury, UND should be no worse than 2014. Couple that with an easier schedule, and UND should win at least 5 to 6 games. Yes, UND lost to Weber State, but they had a true freshman QB playing. They then went on to improve, when they could have packed it in, and beat a ranked Northern Arizona team and UNC on the road.

Bubba has this team improving, and although I think UND narrowly misses the playoffs in 2015, I do believe UND will have a winning record with either 6 or 7 wins. Steady improvement with high quality recruiting and teaching should be the expectation, and Bubba and his staff are living up to those expectations. 2016 should be the major breakout year, but there's no reason not to expect very good things in 2015.
