The ACU radio guy said if you see number 2 for them in on a punt it could be a fake. I guess this guy can play punter, QB, LB.
he also said they are terrible on special teams.
he said the last time ACU played Und in a sport was 1966 when Phil Jackson lead us to a victory over them in a playoff BB game. This guy had quite a knowledge of history.
can hear him on UND football 360
Cool interview. 360 guys are doing a great job with the podcast. I look forward to getting to the office on Thursday mornings so I can listen to the show while I'm working. Not as good as listening to the Nebraska game podcast where I listed to it while I was out fishing, but I guess I'll deal with the office.

I don't remember when exactly it was (sometime in 3rd of 4th quarter) where I thought a fake punt was almost the obvious call (because we were trying to get back in the game) and we didn't do it, probably because SDSU was almost expecting it. That's my take. I didn't look at the line-up formations for that play (and even if I had, it wouldn't mean anything to me as non-player / fan only), so maybe there would be some tell-tale sign(s) either way if someone with a knowing mind did look at it.
Agreed, I though the same thing late in the game, and I think it was like 4th and 14 or something. It would have been a stretch, but I wondered the same at that point.

I made a similar comment earlier about expectations. Think about how outraged (some more than others) we are about the sdsu game. That tells me the fan expectations are there. That’s a good thing.
Now, I’ve been thinking about the second part, about players stepping up. Where does that initiative come from? Is that on the coaches to plant that seed? Or is that something that comes from within the players themselves? Probably some of both. Either way the coaches AND players need to get it soon, because they could let a very promising team/season go by the wayside without it.
PS. For the record, I’ve been very supportive of the coaching staff, but if this is an issue, we may need some reassessment. Need to see how the next game plays out for starters, and go from there.
I'd agree, both!
Disappointed in how flat the players came out to start the second half, which the 360 guys commented on. How is the coaching staff not picking up on this and trying to do something? (maybe they are) How are players not getting themselves pumped and excited about being up on the #1 team in their house and wanting to capitalize? How are the captains and leaders on the team not amping up their teammate and coming out ready for a fast start?
Would starting on offense in the second half have made a difference?
I do think the coaches need to ensure from a recruiting standpoint that they are continuing to recruit playmakers that have the ability to step up and make big plays in big moments, but that is a separate conversation.
I've mentioned a bit, but I do question why we tend to see the play calling shift when we are in these big games. Almost like the coaches are scared of what our abilities are in certain situations. Now they are smarter football minds than myself BUT there just seemed to be something lacking in this last week. I liked the flea flicker call, even though it didn't pan out exactly like we wanted. Though in a huge critical game that we are in and needing big plays, we seem to see less creativity than we do against NAU or Missouri St. Maybe it is a huge ask, but I feel like with all of the scheming that Danny has shown, he should be pulling some of those option out in these types of games. Ahem .... we might need that in Fargo!
Also, I don't remember if there was even a scenario for a fake punt on Saturday, but how has this not happened yet this year? Is the punter not as fast as everyone has claimed? Are coaches scared to try it? I get you need to have the right field position for this, but C'mon!

Listening to the 360 recap right now and I couldn't agree more with some of what they are saying. Expectations are rising for this program and the players need to start stepping up to match those expectations.
This team was up 21-7 on the #1 team in the country and wasn't even playing all that great. That says something about the unlocked potential of this program IF some players start to step up. Does that mean UND will win it all ... of course not. If they curl up in the fetal position and fold they won't even make the playoffs. But if they come together and gel a bit more, especially in tightening up defense (ahem ... force some turnovers) this team could come together at the right time and make some noise.
Get it right, build momentum each week and you could head into Fargo on fire and with confidence with another HUGE opportunity. That includes a home win this weekend, another road win (which is critical), a rivalry win against a Dakota school, all building up to a huge game.
Now, that is a lot of "ifs" and there is a ton of work to do and players need to have the right mentality in these games BUT can you imagine where this team will be if they were to win out and end with a W in Fargo? That's not a team I would want to see in the playoffs, and if those stars can all align, I'd love to get another shot at the bunnies. Yes, they scored more on us than they have all year, but we also scored more on them than anyone else has all year, and we had the missed opportunities to score more. We play them again and I don't see us giving up all those turnovers.
I'm still high on this team and really excited to see where we are at in 3 weeks!

random question, when did nobowls stop updating their website? It looks like the last post was in 2019, but I thought I'd look there since then. Maybe I'm just losing it.

I don't want to bring up the SDSU game too much in the ACU thread, but the fact that we are this upset about losing to #1 and many thought going into the game (and indeed half of the game itself) that we were going to win, is a huge sign of elevated expectations from the fans.
Yeah I diverted a bit with the SDSU comments, but it ties back into bouncing back from a loss.
I agree, expectations for this program should be that we can compete with and beat anyone. That is not to say that we will or will win every game. But the goal should be to be competitive and have the ability to win any game we are in.
I've said it for years, it killed us to not make the D1 jump at the same time as NDSU and SDSU. Who know what would have happened, maybe all things would have been the same. Maybe UND would have transitioned better and quicker than we did. I guess none of it matters now, BUT the goal should be to have the consistent succsess that the SU schools have found.

Having the lead and control, then losing it and with some bad turnovers in bad spots. Poor punt coverage. And some soft schemes defensively. Now I'm not football genius, but why do we always seem to give so much cushion to opposing WR? Its like we just give them whatever they want, 2 yards, 5 yards, 8 yards, 12 yards and focus on getting to them after the catch; then if we miss the first tackle we are giving up big yards. I've wondered this all year because it seems like we consistently play too far off the receiver giving them easy space and easy catches. I don't like that against anyone, but definitely not when you are trying to make a statement against a #1 team.
Some questionable play calls really frustrated me in this game on offense. I mentioned in the GDT that I just don't understand what we were trying to do on 3rd and short or especially 4th and short. 4th and 1 and we throw .... All season we have lined Q up and pushed forward, and I'm pretty sure it has worked every time. So, of course they know it is coming, but good team continue to convert even if someone knows what is coming. If you really want to try some trickery there, mix in the misdirection pitch plays we have used. These have been consistent for big gains and even if the defense reads it well, there is still a good chance you get the first down.
I did think UND bounced back a bit in the 4th quarter, but the 3rd just killed us. I kept saying "too little, too late". It was fun to see the onside kick work and see the offense keep fighting, but we just didn't do enough to slow them down, which is a shame give their offense hasn't been that potent all season.
Onto ACU! While last week was a downer and a missed opportunity, the season is far from over. Have to win the next 3 games, which isn't looking as easy as it was a few weeks ago. ACU should be a home win, refocus, get back to what was working, and hopefully run the score up.
Indiana State has lost 4 one score games to UNI, NDSU, Youngstown and Illinois State. That team has to be hungry and on the road is looking tougher. This is a loss that could keep you out of the playoffs (Idaho St. style). It can be ugly, it can be bad, but it needs to be a win.
USD may have a bad record, but they just beat SIU, and are making changes at QB. This team always shows up against UND .... I'm glad it is a home game.
NDSU is a ? game. I know Bison fans are not high on their team with how they have played. My in-laws think we are going to whoop them and have already offered me tickets. I think they are delusional and frustrated because the Bison aren't running every team out of the building like they have for a decade; meanwhile they are still highly ranked and finding ways to win games. Could we win, sure; but until I see a UND team show up and prove it, my confidence is low. Its like watching the Twins and Yankees in the playoffs.
Seriously, win the next 3 and head into Fargo at 7-3. I'll be pulling hard for SIU against the Bison the week before, but two 7-3 North Dakota teams would have the making of a great rivalry game to end the season. UND has to do their part to setup a great and fun end of the regular season. Regroup and win! There is still so much to play for and winning at the end of the season mean we are heading into playoffs with momentum.

Coaches just keep out coaching themselves. How many times has Q converted 4th and 1. Why not use what works instead of always trying to fake everyone out.

Can't remember the year off the top of my head, but 4-5 years ago Montana State came in ranked #2 or something. And they were averaging like 250-300 yards on the ground or something like that and we were kind of weak against the run that year. I thought they were going to run all over us, but the defense had the game of the year and we contained them on the ground and we won a low scoring game on the blocked punt we recovered in the end zone. This year it's our pass defense that is suspect, can they step up like our run defense did that game? That's what I'm hoping for!
Just checked, I believe it was 2019 and Montana State was ranked number 9.

Solid hands and a knack for getting open. Different type of receiver than those guys. More like a Belquist type from what I've seen.
The kids can block too. I believe it was the long Maag TD the other week, or the long Smith TD. Either way, he was way down field doin his job.

That game was hot trash. Didn't realize the NCHC app was trying to do us a favor by not showing the game earlier.
Better show up next weekend. Bipolar team from last night (I get it was a tie, but we passed the sniff test last night). It appears goaltending is going to cost us this year, even if the D is not what it has been. Missed the first period last night so I didn't realize DeRidder started, but Hellsten didn't look good last night .... OR tonight. Yikes, not sure what to think.
We didn't have much puck luck tonight, and after watching the replay again we may have gotten screwed on the offsides call last night, but regardless .... HAVE TO PLAY BETTER AT HOME!

Yes, I kind of hope we can find an FBS guy or two in the portal.
FBS, D2, D3 ... find the right skill guy. Worth noting Jaleel Mclaughlin came up from D2 Notre Dame College, no down from an FBS school.
That being said if we could find an effective drop down like Alex Tillman, I'd take it. Keep winning and making a name for UND this year and you have a better chance to attract some of these kids for next year.
I'm completely opposed to building the entire roster through the portal like Missouri State does, BUT I'll all for filling in some holes with the right people.

I will respond to my original post and acknowledge that Montana IS undefeated AND you can only play the teams that are on your schedule. They should still have some time to prove themselves. Clearly a good football team BUT they have yet to really play some top competition yet.

Listening to the 360 podcast, I though it was nice to have Herder on. Usually pretty good insight and nice to have an outsider's perspective.
I did hear him say that outside of NDSU and SDSU, he could see Montana being in the mix to compete for a national championship as well. Now that we are outside of the Big Sky, I don't follow those teams as closely. My initial reaction wasy: ok, sure .... its Montana. Then I started digging into the season and if you ask me, they have yet to prove anything ... certainly not their ranking. Now, The Griz could absolutely be a great team, but they have yet to be tested.
At 5-0, their opponents have a combined record of 6-21.
Game 1: Northwestern State (2-4: Beat Lamar and Nichols)
Game 2: South Dakota (1-4: Beat Cal Poly)
Game 3: Indiana St. (1-4: Beat N. Alabama ... though tested the almighty cows)
Game 4: Portland St. (2-3: Beat N. AZ and something calls Lincoln University)
Game 5: Idaho St. (0-6) - The Griz won this by a whopping 8 points. Granted, we have see weird things happen in Pocatella.
At first glance, I'm not sure the Bobcats resume is much better. Though I will concede that Sac State and Weber State both have wins against Colorado State and Utah State respectively. It will be interesting to see who rises to the top in the Big Sky, and even if it is the Griz or the Cats, they haven't shown the dominance you would expect from their lofty rankings yet; though I would put the Bobcats ahead of the Griz. (Disclaimer: This is based on scores, stats and articles...I haven't been actually watching these teams)

Listening to the 360 guys give their mid season review, and loved how they talked about the wrinkles Danny throws on 4th and 1 or short yardage situations to gain 30-40+yards. (As I've said, we did this a few years ago with Skokna, but I never saw it again until the last few games)
-vs. Missouri St - Misdirection by Tommy to the left, quick pitch right, Long TD run for Smith.
-vs Youngstown - Q lines up shotgun, runs up to the line, Maag in motion, fake the handoff to Maag, pitch to Smith for an easy TD up the left side of the field.
- 360 guys say next will be a fake pitch, drop back a few yards then toss it to the RB on a wheel route. I like it!
-What about this. Q take the snap and steps forward towards the line, tosses back or pitches out to Romfo who runs it outside and has a run or pass option. Fast enough to make a play, but could make a throw if the receiver gets open deep. Not as fast as Smith, but fast enough if the field is wide open, but has the arm to make a play if the defense sniffs out the run. I'm not Danny Freund offensive genius, but thoughts?
