  1. I think Hak will show us what he and his coaching staff are made of and the ND team will demonstrate the pride of the Sioux and sweep the Mav's!
  2. The Sioux do not stink! The North Dakota hockey team might have played in a manner synonomous with stinking - but not the Sioux! To say the same could be interpreted as offensive.
  3. SOG for UND 7 (1st period) & 16 (2nd period) for a total of 23, while umass was 7 & 5 for a total of 12. The Sioux look busier than they did yesterday. They just have to get their act together. I see rays of hope!
  4. Another PP goal for the Minutemen! Walski has made at least 2 breakaway saves! But with a man in the box we stumble. 3-1 umass!
  5. I spoke earlier about my being a bit disheartened by the effort last evening. Perhaps that was post game frustration, the fact is that we have a young team. By all accounts they are a great group of young men and realistically - if we want to look at last year - we may have peaked to early. Yes, BU was in the same boat and they proved that they were able to put it together. However, I would like to believe that BU will be the reason that BC stays home this year! It will be a long season; one filled with occasional frustration. Perhaps we will need to take resolve in watching (and cheering) as a young team comes together. We have the proverbial 100 lbs of clay - whether or not they can be molded into a winner will be the question.
  6. Just watched the game and time will obviously tell. What I found a little disheartening was that there wasn't much "fight" in the Sioux. It looked like when they needed to dig deep and come out swinging, they skated with apathy. Not sure what the coach does to fire up his team - but tomorrow will tell whether or not he can do it. I am not talking about beating UMass - just skating the entire game! As someone noted, the BU announcers were extremely complimentary and continued to note that BU best be careful as the Sioux should never be counted out - someone should have told that to our boys! I am confident that we have what it takes - lets hope our coach can light their fire.
  7. I guess good people have a right to disagree. My point is that just because some of us might be democrats and others republicans and the other party happens to be be in power - I would refuse to fly the american flag! If you believe in what I always understood Ralph's admiration of the Fighting Sioux to be you wouldn't question their present fight to do what they believe is correct. They are fighting! I would also agree that the majority of them don't give a rat's hind end about the name of our team. But, I also believe that had not the NCAA put it on the table - the politicians would have quieted their hue and cry when no one jumped on their band wagon! Regardless of whether or not we agree with Mr. Horse is Thunder, when we start making fun of his traditional American Indian name - it becomes racial!
  8. Just saw this posted on another site, can anyone confirm it? 09/23/08 at 12:29 PM #1 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As of Noon Eastern, the Fighting Soiux Sports Network (FSSN) is up and testing at: G17(G11/GB) Ku Band FR 12187 SR 4880 VPID 481 APID 482 VERTICAL This test ended at 12:30pm Eastern. There will be another test peroid today from 1:30pm to 2pm Eastern.
  9. If we think that the ND tribes have brought this issue forward it merely exposes our short-sightedness! The Tribes did not bring race into this argument - if we on this board bring it up - well then we are what we are. The NCAA put this issue on the table and the Tribes - just like UND had to react. To argue with the Tribes at this point shows our colors - just as much as thiers. If we are the proud fighting Sioux chosing to embody the sprit of the Native Americans of our state - then we should be proud to fly their flags - lest we expose our hypocracy. If we don't believe in the same - then it is time to change!
  10. not sure that this is a profitable debate, but I think we shouldn't dismiss human nature that not many of us recall history beyond who won the championship. I am not sure of Coach Woog's won/loss record but we all know his lack of winning the big one. If Hak and Company don't change their ways I am fearful that history will treat them similarly. Admittedly, after four years it is premature to even discuss the same. They have the opportunity to change all that....lets hope they do!
  11. I think it is only fair to remember that the Tribes did not put the current logo issue front and center. I also believe that if polled most Tribal council members would like to see the issue just go away. Unfortunately, when put in front of them it becomes a political issue that they have to respond to in what they perceive as being politically correct. Additionally, I have to believe that Tribal Council members all realize that they have much larger issues to attend to in their own backyards. Objectively speaking, I am afraid that the Tribal council members may subscribe to the mentality that logos such as the Fighting Sioux may not be politically correct, even if they might be prideful of the logo!
  12. Although I prescribe to the no stud goalie wants to sit mentality, a couple of situations next door cause me to pause. Assuming that those folks that do the drafting in the NHL know a bit about the game it is interesting to note that the goofs backup tender (Patterson) was drafted #113 while Kangas (the expected starter) went #135. For comparitive purposes, Eidsness went #139. By the same token, at UMD Brady Hjelle is coming on board as one of the best tenders in the USHL to start the season on the bench. It is hard to believe that two of the best tenders in the USHL, one spitten distance from UND, are starting their freshman year on the bench! Does the Sioux have a goalie coach? Is it Jackson, Eades, Koberinski, or is this a position that Hak doesn't see as important?
  13. I have to admit that the arm chair is getting a little cumfy lately. So I guess I will throw my 2 cents into the hat as well. I am going to differ a bit and perhaps some will consider it a cop out - but I am not sure that good teams have weak links, average teams do, and certainly poor teams do - but not good ones. I think we will have a good team with areas of opportunity presenting themselves as the year progresses. I think I heard that line from Obama! In any case, looking back to last year we averaged about 3 goals per game and our opponents averaged about 1.86. In the previous year we averaged 3.55 goals to our opponents 2.7. JPL had a lot to do with the difference in the difference in goals scored by our opponents. But interestingly, with the fall off in opponents goals - so did ours. Last year BC (damn them!) started a goalie fresh out of high school (not a minute in juniors) and he played every second that they had a goalie on the ice who at the end of the year was ranked 19th in both goals against (2.26) and in save percentage (.920). However, offensively BC ranked number 3 in scoring (I know they may have played cup cakes but I think they scored 6 against us) with an average of 3.51 goals per game. That being said, Mr. Muse was phenomenol down the stretch. I say this because I think we need to be patient as the year progresses. I am more concerned about our offensive output than I am about our defense on the ice. I think that either goalie can do the job and really shouldn't be the focus of our concern. The real concern should be finding the appropriate offensive line chemistry that puts points on the board. If we can average 3.1 goals a game the season should be a lot of fun. If we average less than that - I am afraid it could be a frustrating year.
  14. If coach Blais recruited Phil, have the existing coaches ever recruited an American goaltender? I am hoping so because I wouldn't want any one to ask the question did Lee slip away or was he born in the wrong country? Walski is obviously an American, but I thought he was a walk on 3rd goalie.
  15. While the REA's financials might be proprietary, certainly information on UND's revenue stream is not. As a governmental entitity I am confident that the $$ it receives from any contributor is public information. Hence, the information should be out there somewhere. Can someone put this argument to rest by sharing the facts?
  16. So, some of us think that the goalie position is the weakest link in the coming year. Being somewhat of a newbee and admittedly not a hockey expert - what was the weakest link on this years team, was it goaltending, defense, offense, or was it coaching? Numbers wise we had a great goaltender, draft wise, if my memory serves me correctly we had close to 11 NHL potentials on the ice. If we can forecast next year's weak link we should be able to identify this year's as well.
  17. The SIJHL is the Superior International Junior Hockey League and is comprised of the following teams: Dryden, Fort Frances, Fort William, Marathon, Schreiber, and the Thunder Bay Bearcats as well as the Thunder Bay Bulldogs.
  18. Given the accomplishments of Mr. Eidness as well as all that we have heard of him - is the new kid going to be happy taking practice pucks. Sounds like he's decent and expects to play. But, will he be happy watching our blue chipper for the next four years? I just hope we were honest with him.
  19. I just noticed in the QMJHL draft that the Lewiston Maineiacs took Mr. Clark as their 1st round pick and the draft's 6th pick overall. Anyone have an idea how this bodes for the Sioux? Obviously, if he chooses to go there we know what that means but, how anxious is he to move to Maine?
  20. Recently I posted on this site and someone took me to task for standing up for what I believe. It had to do with the vile and what I perceived as hostile approach to some members of this board to the actions of TJ Oshie. The presumption of guilt without facts just grates me, probably because as a proud American I was brought up believing that this premise is a key to our democratic groundings. By the same token a member of the Board appears to be presenting themselves as the spokes person of "our" people. This thread began in response to a letter from a Tribal member with one point of view and another Tribal member, with a distinct different perspective, is recklessly allowing the perception to be formed that he speaks for all of us. Neither of these individual's speaks for anyone but themselves. That is their perogative. I too was raised on a reservation - at at time when things were different. My elders and mentors taught me that we must exist in this world consistent with what in our language is termed "Mitakuye Oyasin". Basically, it embodies the premise that we are all related. Some of the vile and hostile notes that I have seen on this board (from those wanting us to believe that they represent Tribal interests) I see as nothing more than a divide and conquer mentality. On one hand I am taken back because this is so inconsistent with our teachings and the other I am wondering if this really isn't someone masquarading just to stir the pot! I do believe that this is a time, if ever, to understand the teachings of our elders, especially when it comes to Mitakuye Oyasin. Someone far more wise than I captured what it means in the followng prayer that is still spoken: Aho Mitakuye Oyasin....All my relations. I honor you in this circle of life with me today. I am grateful for this opportunity to acknowledge you in this prayer.... To the Creator, for the ultimate gift of life, I thank you. To the mineral nation that has built and maintained my bones and all foundations of life experience, I thank you. To the plant nation that sustains my organs and body and gives me healing herbs for sickness, I thank you. To the animal nation that feeds me from your own flesh and offers your loyal companionship in this walk of life, I thank you. To the human nation that shares my path as a soul upon the sacred wheel of Earthly life, I thank you. To the Spirit nation that guides me invisibly through the ups and downs of life and for carrying the torch of light through the Ages. I thank you. To the Four Winds of Change and Growth, I thank you. You are all my relations, my relatives, without whom I would not live. We are in the circle of life together, co-existing, co-dependent, co-creating our destiny. One, not more important than the other. One nation evolving from the other and yet each dependent upon the one above. All of us a part of the Great Mystery. Thank you for this Life. Aho Mitakuye Oyasin is a simple yet profound statement. It comes from the Lakota Nation and means all my relations. It is spoken during prayer and ceremony to invite and acknowledge all relatives to the moment. To most of us today, relative means a blood relation or another human in the family lineage. We have not been taught that an entity, other than human, could be a relative. Understanding this simple statement and contemplating it, could change your outlook on life forever. If you love and honor your relatives, you would be loving and honoring most of what is on this earth, if you lived by this meaning of
  21. If you recieved all the sanctimonious crap that he received from the "sioux fans" would you want to come back? Shoot, his "fans" at least those on this board had him tried, found guilty and shot before anyone heard the facts. Heck, with fans like that who needs enemies? What would you do?
  22. My grandmother was a full blooded Lakota from Standing Rock. Not once did I ever hear her complain about her life or about life on the reservation. Please do not assume that we all see ourselves as victims. We were the Fighting Sioux! It is hard listening to those espouse that we are victims of the dominant society and that we must strike back to level the playing field. I do not believe that we were ever conquered, nor did we surrender. I was taught that we fought until there was no more fight, then if their was no other way we negotiated. It is also my understanding that it was that tenacity, that approach to adversity, as the reason the University chose to call its athletic teams the Fighting Sioux. I don't believe that there is any greater sense of flattery than to have an adversary adopt your identity. I would be offended if a school adopted the name of Custer or the 7th Calvary. Now those were some folks that didn't like Indians! Given the struggles back home, I find it hard to believe that this is an issue that the elders or the masses for that matter are overly concerned about. Unfortunately, taking it to a vote immediately makes it a political issue. Especially, since it wasn't that long ago that our Tribe supported the name. One of the bits of wisdom that my grandmother shared before her passing was to remind me that only a fool with argue with a fool. I choose not to argue but moreover hope that the parties involved can come to the table and discuss the issue free of political baggage with the purpose of leaving the table with a win/win proposition!
  23. I know that some may think that I am wacko! But it goes back to that old proverb that until you walk a mile in someones moccasins you really can't see things from their perspective. In modern terms, its like a guy telling a woman what a labor pain feels like! But, I think that we are missing the boat when we take a look at the new Ralph and what we have done to the Sioux logo. What is the closest thing that we as Americans cherish as our logo? While some may say the sign at Walmart - I was raised thinking it was the American flag. We hold it in reverence. We stand, we salute it, we told that their are certain ways that it is to be displayed and we certainly never walk on it. Yet when you walk into the new Ralph you have to try hard not to walk on the logo - the source of Sioux pride! The locker room has it embroidred into the carpet. How can we not see that such irreverence for such a souce of pride does not come with consequences. I know that some of you that read this will take the opporunity to mock what I have said, and if you think from such vein, tell your wife what a labor pain feels like. My point is not to get rid of the logo, but moreover - display it with the reverence it deserves!
  24. New to this topic so I apologize if I this is old CRAP! But having been around hockey long enough to understand, or at least hear, all of the superstitions - including the strength of the hockey gods. That's the great spirit that dictates if the puck bounces go your way or that of the other team! Have we won the "big one" in the new museum? Or, are we only teased there - never to taste the juice of the ultimate fruit! Given the strength of the hockey gods - Notre Dame over Michigan - go figure, the new building may have a jinx that we may never overcome! Take to the learnings of our Sioux ancestry (especially since we are so intent on the respect of the same) and realize that this monstrocity may be the source of "bad medicine" as the elders say!
  25. I was wondering what the term "hostile and abusive" really meant, but after reading the so called Sioux fans throw their team under the bus - I now know what it means. No one seems to give note to the fact that BC was on a mission. They out scored their opponents 10- 2 (i think) in their frozen four games! It is embarrasing to see those that call themselves fans treat their team the way some on this board have speared the Sioux - all in the name of "if I buy a ticket I have a right to bitch and complain!" That may be a point that cannot be argued; buy your ticket and you can bitch and moan until the sun comes up. However, fans do not do that to their team! What happen on this board is hostile and abusive to any true fan of the North Dakota Fighting Sioux! When someone takes a shot at our team, you're taking a shot at each one of us. If you can say that what happened in Denver deserves your caustic comments, you need to ask if you really bleed green or are you just a fair weather fan! Fight on Sioux!
