  1. On the 10:00 WDAZ news last night, it was reported that the committee has decided to invite all remaining candidates except Schlickmann for on-campus interviews. This was not in the Herald today for whatever reason.

Maybe because the paper was printed before midnight and this was not released until during the day?

  2. Another simple way to look at this:

You have five academic years to complete four competive seasons. (A competitive season is competing more than 20% of games, etc, etc. See above.)

Robbie got hurt in his second year of college in his second competitive season. He had three academic years to finish two seasons. No worries.

Ryan Hale? Same thing: three academic years to finish two seasons.

Brandon Strouth? He'd been a "redshirt freshman". He used up an academic year doing that. Plus, another academic year ticked by when he got hurt without meeting the "competitive season" criteria. He needed to apply for the hardship waiver year (a sixth academic year to complete four competitive seasons).

Michael Forney? He's in academic year two. I believe he's completed one competitive season (2006-07) but hasn't played enough (<20%, none in second half) to have this one, 2007-08, count as a competitive year. This leads me to believe he has three academic years left to complete three competitive seasons. Michael has no "clock" issues right now.

Where I could be wrong is if 2006-07 did not count as a competitive season for Forney. If that's the case then he'd only have three academic years to complete four competitive seasons and would need to apply for a hardship waiver (sixth academic year to complete four competitive seasons). EDIT: Forney played in at least 16 games in 2006-07 and at SCSU on March 3, 2007 so the 2006-07 season counted as his first of four competitive seasons.

    Makes sense to me.

  3. Medical Hardship Waiver

If a student-athlete suffers a season-ending injury or illness after competing in a limited amount of competition during a particular academic year, he/she may qualify for a medical hardship waiver which would allow him/her an additional season of competition during the five-year period of eligibility. To qualify for a medical hardship:

    (a) the student-athlete's injury or illness must occur in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition or subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school;

    (b) the injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport and must result in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and

  4. Yeah, but only from that part of Minnesota that lies northerly and westerly of a line commencing at the Minnesota/North Dakota border at the point commonly known as Wahpeton/Breckenridge, thence northerly following Hwy 75 a distance of approximately 117 miles to that point commonly known as Crookston, Minnesota, thence easterly along a line following Hwy 2 a distance of approximately 250 miles to that point commonly known as Duluth, Minnesota and there terminating. Such area including the principal hockey hotbeds of Moorhead, East Grand Forks, Crookston, Thief River Falls, Warroad, Roseau, Bemidji, Grand Rapids, International Falls, Hibbing, Eveleth, Hallock, Baudette, Virginia, Bagley, Hermantown, and Duluth, also known as Sections 7 and 8. The rest of Minnesota, with but a few exceptions, actually produces some rather milktoast hockey talent, other than those Minnesota products who had the good fortune and the genuine foresight to hone their talents, both on and off the ice, at the University of North Dakota.

Instead of following Hwy 2 from Hwy 75 you should follow Hwy 10 east to Detroit Lakes then Hwy 34 to Hwy 371 then east on Hwy 200 to Hwy 2 then to Duluth since Duluth is east of Fargo and not Grand Forks. Or to be more technical Hwy 10 from Detroit Lakes to Motley then east on Hwy 210 to Duluth then Cloquet gets into the mix also.

  5. Of course students should get to vote in Grand Forks! They live here, they have an effect on the town, and the actions of the town affect them. The clash between UND and GFK needs to be figured out by enabling everyone to vote, not by denying people the right to vote.

And where are thousands of them this week? HOME.

  6. Maybe if we gather together in a peace circle, hold hands, and sing old Beatles tunes, the problem will just go away?

Or maybe we can convince ourselves that light rail really is the answer and that people will board trains taking them from Rogers to Maple Grove, at which point they exit the train and board a bus which will take them to downtown Minneapolis to work.

You did not answer the question.

  7. I do remember it as being fun, and I dont ever remember my parents complaining that we had to go to Dickinson for a game on saturday and to Fargo for the sunday game, all with a car (suburbans were just work vehicles then) and an extra kid or two.

Not enough seatbelts to go around either back then. I was thinking the same thing about Suburbans. Now parents complain in a bragging sort of way.

  8. There were many kids that went to host families. My parents always had a carfull on the road trip, and always stayed in a hotel (usually the Devils Lake teams did stay in a hotel wherever they went). But many times when teams came to DL, they were in private homes and the Eagles Club, Knights of Columbus and Elks would take turns and put on breakfasts and dinners for the teams and coaches. It was a different world then, and it was a good one.

You are right about it being a good one. You could put a lot of kids in a car before every kid needed a big bag to haul their stuff in. Geez those kids and parents must of had a blast back then. What happened?

  9. And the myth is that this new tax will go entirely towards the cost of roads.

Now go get together with your JFK and 9/11 conspiracy theorists and try to convince me that Republicans blew up the 35W bridge in order to get the Twins and Vikings new stadiums.

It will unless the Republicans raid the fund for some other reason. Or should they do what TPaw wanted and tried to get the contractors to put up the money to fix the I-35 and Crosstown interchange? That idea really worked well did it not? How else do you suggest they do to fix this major problem?

  10. Governor Pawlenty VETOED the transportation bill, which was overridden by the MN State Senate and House of Representatives. Get your facts straight!

Gas Tax Takes Effect April 1st

    Legislature Overrides Pawlenty's Veto

I have my facts straight. They legislature should have called it a user fee because when ever TPaw raises a tax that is what he calls it. I have no problem with the new gas tax. What is the option? Charge it and worry about it later in how to pay for it? The tax has not been raised in twenty years. So then the tax on the cost of a gallon of gas got smaller and smaller of the cost of that gallon of gas. With the way the price of gas flucuates it will not be noticed by the consumer unless they are told to worry about it. It is a user fee plan and simple. The gas tax has not even come close to covering the cost or road construction it always has taken money from the general fund to cover the difference. Gas taxes cover about 25% of the cost of roads.

  11. Mid to late 70's.

    Any other questions?

Sounds like the parents then had their heads on the shoulders instead of up thier a()es. They stayed at the players homes? That was a great idea that maybe should be brought back.

  12. Listen, I'm all in favor of leaving politics out of the mix, but when you're going to thru something out like "Pawlenty's a douche," it deserves a rebuttal.

TPaw is a douche. They should have called the gas tax a user fee because that is what TPaw likes to call tax increases. Then you have Lynn Stauss saying it will be ahrd on east Side gas stations with the new tax. Well those same stations have been enjoying the extra three cents a gallon they have been making over the last few years. Though their gas costs was three cents less than GF they still charged the same as a GF station instead of charging three cents less. Never heard him complain about that though.

  13. Yes I am from Devils Lake. Spent alot of time traveling with my brothers hockey team. Those were the days when hockey parents took in kids from the other teams (instead of hotels), so we had many different kids stay at out house. Played the team from Carmen quite often.

    And when was this?

  14. My favorite is Jake Brandt.

Great guy. Best teammate anyone could ask for.

I also like Eddie Belfour, but that goes back to the days when he played against my brother in PeeWee's and Bantams.

Where in Manitoba are you from?

  15. We are all now dumber for reading that argument

I was just pointing out a common error and I get slammed for it? You should now be smarter if that is at all possible.
