2025-26 University of North Dakota Hockey Season
Speed_Kills replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
I think we will continue to be in the running in the future for those type of players as that transition becomes more popular and more of known entity. There's also no guarantee the top CHL guys even go college route. The top guys in the CHL historically have done well in the NHL. First year of a new dynamic, these kids have a lot to think about. -

The BSU series drives me nuts. High risk, no reward. -

I have no firm knowledge of DJ and Herter's current relationship but they were teammates at UND for 3 years. The HC decision was not theirs to make. If Herter comes back I'd say the decision made by the powers-that-be would be a non-issue. -

I think there is a "meaningful chance." I won't put a percentage on it but it's his if he wants it. Depends on if 1) he wants to make a so-called lateral move to come home after being passed up for the head job and 2) does he get a significant pay raise by doing so. Source I know spoke with Herter and he was under the impression after the interview process that he would have been offered UND HC job if WMU had been eliminated in the regionals. UND wanted to move quickly and WMU kept/keeps winning. I do think they haven't posted the associate HC position in the hope that he wants to come in. Would be a huge get. Very connected. Winner everywhere he goes. -
I believe this is correct. Online articles indicate that *if* he decides to go the college route, NIL dollars are not important. Most important is development for the next level. Several sources indicate North Dakota and Michigan are the two in the running. Here's to hoping.

Honestly, his chances of playing are not greater if he enters the portal. A sub-.900 save percentage is not that attractive. Unless he goes lower half of CCHA or AHA he will be a back-up/competing for starts wherever (if) he goes. I’m very neutral on what he chooses to do.

I would say this is not true, at least in the MIAC and WIAC schools. I knew and played with several high-end NAHL guys who decided to hang up the skates due to the cost of school to play DIII.
-
Stay tuned. Very soon.

Cam Berg was a portal pick-up as well. I would say a lot of the portal players that UND has historically picked up also have that "bleed green" attribute. Not every single portal pick-up is going to work out. But it's part of the process now.

You cannot play center in college hockey if you do not win face-offs or puck battles in the corner (especially in the d-zone). That's why he was playing wing. Puck possession is crucial and if you fail to be reliable in those two areas, you do not deserve to play center. He'll play wing soon enough at his next stop, too.

That current player is correct. Boisvert is the big loss, obviously.

Turns out the nets at Michigan are still the same size as they were in North Dakota.

If/when he comes back, he should wear a letter. Heart and soul guy who dreamed of playing for the program since he was a little kid. I wouldn't wish what the kid has been going through outside of the rink on my worst enemies. His dad is an ophthalmologist.* And a fantastic human being. -
I picked the wrong Lammy. Was saying Mario as a dark horse - intense and a leader.
-
My guess for short list of coaching staff candidates (no inside information) Smaby, Chyzyk, Trupp, Simpson, Hextall, M Lamoureux
-
Finalists for the job were DJ, Herter, Smaby, Fohr.

Yes and no. Easiest way around it is funneling NIL money through a Canadian company or bank. No change in visa status, green card, etc. required.
-
Two things can be - and I think are - true: 1) Brad is a high character, good person who cares deeply for UND Hockey and always will. 2) It was time to move in a different direction. His letter was fantastic and classy IMHO. He will receive the same treatment that Blais and Hak receive when they show him on the big board at the Ralph.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the rule is new this year that a goalie only has X amount of time to fix an equipment issue on an icing - so teams do not stall to "fix" equipment with tired players on the ice who are not allowed to change. Teams can switch goalies or use their timeout.

To my knowledge, Grant was not offered a scholarship and was simply expected to walk-on. Was not even recruited until he committed to Minnesota. Sioux fan growing up. Pretty poor foresight* as it cost UND G Potulny, R Potulny and D Irmen. Similarly, Michigan St locking up the oldest Cullen was masterclass as it likely means they get the family (with the younger ones being even better and that's no knock on Brooks who is a really solid hockey player).

I'll take RhettRingers word for it, hasn't been wrong yet. I'm softening/warming up to/accepting DJ as the HC. The sky isn't falling. It's not what I personally wanted out of the whole thing as I think it is a more short-sighted decision to try and keep current players and recruits rather than getting an up and comer that could be a longer term solution. But with fresh blood in the assistant coaches' group (paint me as someone who thinks Chyzyk would be great in that role if interested), there is optimism.

There were 100% off-ice issues - especially relating to senior/graduate so-called leadership.
