  1. It's been too long to tell...

Yup. But as for the regular season, all our sports did the same thing. Epic fail at the end of the season. Football...fail, Hockey...fail, Basketball...fail, but then made a nice little come back today and should be dancing. It's a huge accomplishment coming from where the program was 2 years ago.

  2. huh, have you seen your team play lately? :whistling::blush:

Yes. Much better than the other 4 seeds in the tournament, and much more dangerous because we would be at home. We are a better team at home, that's why I wouldn't be surprised at making the frozen four as long as we make it to the tournament, which I kind of doubt is going to happen.

  3. Here's a take on the current bracketology courtesy of Tim Rosenthal at insidehockey.com

    East (Bridgeport, CT)

#1 Boston University vs. #16 Bemidji State

    #6 Vermont vs. #9 Yale

    Midwest (Grand Rapids, MI)

#2 Notre Dame vs. #15 Air Force

#8 North Dakota vs. #11 Miami

    West (Minneapolis)

    #3 Michigan vs. #13 Minnesota

    #5 Northeastern vs. #12 Princeton

    Northeast (Manchester, NH)

#4 Denver vs. #14 Ohio State

#7 New Hampshire vs. #10 Cornell

INCH also has a new 4 x 4 that takes a dig at the "State of Hockey"

    I like those brackets.

  4. The fact that more than 4 big 10 teams are getting in the hoops tourney is sad. I am working on a bet with a couple big 10 apologists for the tourney but so far they have been haggling a little too much. Lunardi had 8 big 10 teams getting in when we started discussing the bet. At that point I gave them a number of 3.5 as an over under on how many advance past round one and a number of 6.5 for total big ten wins in the dance, but we will see how many they actually get in.

    7 minimum:

Michigan State, Illinois, Purude...all locks, duh

Ohio State locked up a bid last night

    There's 4

Now you have to say 3 that are in right now are: Minnesota, Michigan, Penn State

Minnesota: Beat NU on Thursday and move them up to lock status. No doubt in my mind.

Michigan: Beat Iowa and they'll move to lock status

Penn State: I think PSU needs to beat Indiana, and then Purdue.

Out and don't talk about them unless they win 2 or 3 games in the BTT: Northwestern

    Golfing: Iowa and Indiana

See the problem is, it's not based on bids by conference. If 11 Big 10 teams were legitimate tourney teams, they'd pick 11. Obviously that would never happen, but its based on each team, not confernece affiliation.

You have to realize that the bubble teams have been getting pumped lately, whereas the Big 10 has a super high SOS and the highest conference RPI (actually might be 2nd now after the Duke/UNC game)

I think 7 is a VERY SAFE number. I think 2 of those 3 teams that are in "right now" will actually be in come tourney time, so 6 is feasible as well. If any of those teams lose in the first round, they are out.

    EDIT:

MSU advances to the Elite 8, Maybe F4. Healthy and very talented

Purdue also wins a game or two, no doubt in my mind. Hummel should be healthy and ready to play. They are a solid team and will beat up on a 10 or 11 seed.

Illinois will also be seeded highly and beat up on a poor opponent. They play great D, but I don't see them as a threat to advance real far.

Ohio State...one and done, I think they suck

Minnesota....all depends on the matchup, but I think we win one, maybe 2 games at most.

Michigan...wild card, I could see them making a deep run. they've beaten some top teams, and lost to some terrible ones. so streaky.

    PSU....sucks

I'd say 5 teams from the Big 10 win their first game.

  5. I stopped being interested in the bball toruney about 10 years ago. for some of the same reasons. How big of a college hockey fan mustr gopherz be if he will skip the final five and go to a bball toruney.

Played basketball my whole life. Who says you can't be a fan of both? I know many aren't, but also plenty who are. Besides, the F5 is on Thursday Friday Saturday, whereas the regional is Friday/Sunday. If anything, I'd skip Friday of basketball if there was Sioux/Gophers at the X. I'll be back from spring break anyways, might as well go to both.

  6. The Gophers won't be in that tournament either.

C'mon out to the Hoggsbreath for breakfast.

Yes they will be, especially with a win Thursday. Beat Northwestern and I'll bet you any amount of money that they are in, no doubt about it. Even a loss and we could still squeak in. Not like I'm going to watch the Gophers anyway, because the rule is that the host team can not play in their own regional.

If you buy me some hashbrowns I'm there in a heartbeat

  7. Settle down there, little fella...I think someone's mommy needs to step in and put him down for some nappy time.

Another keyboard tough guy, huh? Tell you what, come WCHA Final Five time, I'll be sure to let you know my section and seat number so you can stop by and call me 'stupid' and 'clueless' to my face. That'll give you a chance to enlighten me on your keen insight of college hockey. Sound good, Obi-won?

    Little fella? Haha

If I go to the F5 I'll definitely stop by and say hi, but I have tickets for the NCAA basketball regional so I'm not sure how conflicting that will be.

  8. Historically speaking, they're patsies, gopherz. I'm assuming you know that, though, because that's why they were slated to play in the Mariucci "Classic". You don't exactly get invited to play into that tournament if you're a noteworthy opponent.

    Northeastern 2007-08: 16-18-3

    Northeastern 2006-07: 13-18-5

    Northeastern 2005-06: 3-24-7

    Northeastern 2004-05: 15-18-5

    Northeastern 2003-04: 11-16-7

    Northeastern 2002-03: 10-21-3

Yea, gopherz, I'm sure you predicted the 23-9-4 record of the Huskies this year. I'm guessing that the 2005-06 season is when your UM athletic director would have been licking his chops thinking "hey...I'm thinking Mariucci Classic for this team!".

You are a fool. There is nothing that has to do with how they were in the past or how I predicted them to do this year. They are a better team than almost everyone in the WCHA, and we beat them. You're just trying to cover your a$$ for saying something so incredibly stupid and clueless.

  9. This is the year that Jan Brady steps all over her big pompous sister Marcia.

It will give the St. Clown folks plenty of ammo for the next few years, having

ended the Gophers' season and denying them the hostess role in the regional.

    Mankato will end Wisconsin's season.

Duluth will end Colorado College's season.

    Denver will end UAA's season.

The Sioux will, of course, end Tech's season.

SCSU, Mankato, UMD, Denver, and North Dakota will make for a rousing Final Five.

    Mankato will end Duluth's season.

The Sioux will end Makato's season.

Denver will end St. Cloud's season.

And the only two teams going to the Big Show from the WCHA will be North Dakota and Denver.

Sioux take the trifecta. MacNaughton. Broadmoor. NCAA.

    JBSU has zero bragging rights.

  10. he is back  you must have forgotten about the last 2 1/2 months and friday when he got yanked AGAIN - sorry gopherz.........the gophs could win this for sure. 2 medicore teams in the wcha battling but scsu will be ready to play so the gophers better be ready as well. this will be a high flying no defense series. will be fun to watch

I have not forgot, just being optimistic  Although it was MTU, he looked like a changed man on Saturday. If Kangas plays like he did early in the season, the Gophers are far from mediocre. That being said, he might continue his 2nd half landslide and we could get rocked, I just don't see it.

I don't see a high flying no defense series. We'll see.

  11. Totally disagree for this reason: MTU will play hard and is a grind-it-out team regardless of the score. There is not a softer team in the WCHA than SCSU. UM got the perfect match-up. MTU gets down by a couple goals, they'll continue to fight/grind. SCSU gets down by a couple, they'll pack it in.

Now I hope I'm wrong because I would love to see the F5 without the Gophers!

MTU will play hard, but they suck. The talent level is so unbelievable between UND and MTU that it won't matter if UND comes out playing half-ass. I'm just trying to talk myself into thinking UND will sweep, but I would be quite happy if that didn't happen. Kind of like you predicting the Gophers to crush, you'd be happy if they didnt.

SCSU is very weak, I agree with that. Perfect match up for us, no doubt. Not only are they soft, but they are scared of the Gophers. I like our chances of putting in a few in the first period and crushing them both nights. (besides, I get to go home a day earlier for spring break if we can sweep  )

  12. Just where does that come into pairwise, speaking of no mind.

I never said it did. I was just pointing out that it was a big win. And I give zero credibility to someone who puts them in the same sentence as Brown.

My money would be on Weslowski vs Kangas or Patterson.

I also think that SCSU is going to come to play. They will look at it as giant killing.

Biggest thing now is not to limp in, but build momentum. CC limped in last year with a poor showing at the F5 and they were one and done.

I'd like to be the guy who you are putting that money down with. Maybe there is some lucky college hockey bookie out there that you could donate to.

SCSU will think about coming to play, and then come out and realize that they are scared of the mighty Gophers and Mariucci. Like I've said countless number of times, we have their number. This is basically their National Championship...which is the only reason they have any type of chance

GOPHER SWEEP with Kangas allowing no more than 5 goals in 2 games. He is BACK.

  13. UM is about as much of a lock to win their series as there is of the 5. JBSU is so soft and such a one trick pony with Roe/Lasch that this is a 2 game sweep with neither game being close. I could see UM winning each 6-2 or 6-3. UND will get more of a test from MTU.

UND/MTU is going to be more of a blowout than UMN/JBSU I feel like.

MTU didn't have a chance last weekend against UMN either, did they?

Nope, they didn't. Kangas righted his ship (I hope)....MTU didn't have a chance, and they didn't deserve to. They were totally crushed both nights, but won Friday due to 2 or 3 of the biggest sieve goals I have ever seen. Frazee-like.

Were you humbled by the result of the Duluth series?

Whether or not SCSU takes advantage of their opportunity is up to them. They do tend to play scared against the Gophers, much like the Bulldogs. I just don't think a 2-0 win against the last place team after a 6-5 sieve fest the night before exactly rights the Gopher ship. Of course SCSU didn't do much this past weekend, either, but the Gophers haven't exactly oozed consistency the past few weeks to the point where I'm ready to say they are a lock to sweep. They're capable of losing 2 of 3, but who knows if SCSU is capable of winning 2 of three...sounds confusing. :(

I'm going to say "toss up."

Our ship doesn't need to be right to beat SCSU. They are scared of us, and we own them. 4-0 on the season. 'Nuf said

  14. Hmnnnn...maybe daylight savings time is responsible for the PRI somehow having Minnesota in the NCAA tournament field of 16 despite a 7-9-2 record since January 1st with wins against Michigan Tech, Alaska-Anchorage, Brown, and Northeastern? UMD and a St Cloud sweep are quality wins, I'll spot you that, but still...

You have no idea what you're talking about if you're putting Northeastern in that same group. They are 5th in the Pairwise, get your facts straight before you post that garbage. Much much bigger win than both UMD and SCSU, especially since we beat Northeastern without Schroeder, Hoeffel, and Fairchild.

  15. Wow, so if the Gophers win out and take the F5...possibly the best they could do is take 12th?

They better not falter (and hope that no one behind them wins out or wins their tourney), otherwise they'll be on the outside looking in.

Go Sioux! I want to take over the Mariucci regional with a sea of green.

No, I'm not totally sure of that. The only scenarios I changed was the Gopher games, none of the other ones. We could still beat St. Cloud, lose the play in game, and be in the tournament.

I made UND get swept by Tech, placing them at 13th in the pairwise.

The Gophers won the F5, making them 12th.

     :(
