  1.

Already got that one :) I'll repeat something I said in a different thread...

you're a good man Jim Dahl!

Hopefully others will awake one day and realize what you have, that the reach of the NCAA goes no further than the sidelines of the sports surfaces of NCAA Universities.

As I say, a nickname is what we choose to collectively call ourselves.

Your respect for the preponderance of North Dakota fans who fancy themselves Sioux fans is well placed in my humble opinion.

It's too bad your web site is so tanted by the shills and the sheep that follow them...I guess it was an obvious target from the beginning...

    Go Sioux!!

  2. No, its Fighting Hawks Hockey.

oh, you're talking about that new nickname?  I heard about that, I heard it was super generic and even got confused with the team we played last week being its the same name and all.  Right up there on the TV we were the Redhawks last night. That's the origins of some serious tradition there.

You're saying that you want to identify our prestigious hockey program using that new official nickname and throw out probably the most unique and well-known college hockey name in the nation? So you're saying we shouldn't say that we are the fighting Sioux anymore because of this "new" nickname? is this what you're saying? I'm just trying to make sure I understand your perspective here?

Kind of like when a woman gets married she changes her last name and never uses her maiden name again?, well unless she had a really good maiden name like if she was from fame or money. Then she throws in the hyphen doesn't she?  I'm thinking maybe we should go with a hyphen like if we were a Kennedy or something. What do you think? Or should we just get rid of the name all together and never speak of it again like it's some sort of pariah or horrible thing in our past.

This is what it really comes down to isn't it? Do we believe the Fighting Sioux name is a name to take pride in, and a name that we would want ourselves associated with?  This is the only question in the end that matters.  In the end, as is always the case, we will call ourselves what we want. Make no mistake about it.  After all, that's what a name is or I should say where a name comes from.

Oh and nice job respecting the thread that I started and not having it be a debate thread.

    Move on.

  3. Going back over a half of a century from the first time University of North Dakota blades hit ice surfaces all across America it grown from the beginning to become this unique and special program we all know as Fighting Sioux hockey.  As I have said before, a nickname which has reached the full potential of a nickname like none other.

The official name for the school can be whatever it is, no matter, it has no impact on the reality of who we are, who this team is, or what the program is. Ask any player who has played for the program, current or past, ask any fan or any foe, hear it loud and here it clear, it's fighting Sioux Hockey and those that understand it are so very proud of what we all have and share.

    So Sioux Forever on ya!

...Let's have this thread as a place fans can post great statments or quotes from players, past or present, coaches and public figures who speak to this fact.  I hear it all of the time and I have for many many years, long before the Sioux name was in the NCAA cross hairs.  Being a Sioux Hockey fan or player has been a pretty special thing for scores and the Sioux name is central in that tradition.  The Sioux name speaks to that tradition.  It's very clear that the preponderance of those invested plan to keep the Sioux name as a predominant identification of said tradition.  So when you hear it, post it.

...Let's not have this thread be another move on debate thread.  All of the move on plants and cronnies can move on now,. The schools official name has changed and the settlement agreement with the NCAA has been met.  Done! Whoo hoo!!  (Applause)

If you want to promote the new nickname do it somewhere else.  This is about honoring our tradition and respecting our name. The name we choose to call ourselves and, its pretty apparent, want to continue to refer to ourselves as and as long as it is a free country we get to proudly declair ourselves as.

    Go Sioux!!

  4. to be fair, people were complaining 6 months ago, 3 months ago, 1 month ago...about everything that even related to the process.  There was major complaining long before they started changing the rules.

Not aallowing North Dakota as a choice in the vote was when complaining became very justified.

  5. I was just saying, everyone knows how bad wisco has been, why the heck did Schloss need to write that piece. Karma sucks.

    Ok fair enough.

I only picked your post to reply to because it was the last one in this thread that was making that argument. My comment was meant to be a reply to all of those posts that I have seen, from the game day thread, to here, to Brads Blog.

My apologies if I unluckily picked the one guy that was only kidding. Also, you might want to consider some emojis to help readers not get confused about shuch things.:D:blink::angry::blush::silly::lol:

I was just saying, everyone knows how bad wisco has been, why the heck did Schloss need to write that piece. Karma sucks.

More disappointing than the loss last night is all these whinning posts I've been reading about how Brad shouldn't have written the article about Wisconsin's pathetic performance over the last year.  Are we really going to be that guy? Really?...

Someone posted on Brads blog that the article was great bulletin board material for Eaves.  I'm not advocating that we be doing what that BC player did when BC landed in Grand Forks and he tweeted that he had arrived in a boring (or whatever) town to get a win and go home but Brad's article was not claiming a victory, let a lone an easy one, at all.

Brad's aticle was in my opinion very appropriate in that it addressed the state of a program which happens to be one of our greatest rivals over decades. I think writing the article showed great respect for the tradition of our rivalry and the fact that it challenged Wisconsin, in a sense, to get their crap together was a necessary component of that.

Bullin bord material?  Here was my reply on Brads blog.  I threw in Coach Lucia as a great example of someone who doesn't respect their tradition because they don't respect their rivals:

Of course it was great bulletin board material. Writing it was also the correct thing to do. Holding bitter rivals to a standard of excellence and calling them out on it when they fall short of this is in our best interest. It is the intelligent way to be even if it means you put yourself at risk of defeat. It’s all part of the nuturing of the rivalry. Are the rivalries not a big part of our tradition and passion for our team? It’s stunning to me to observe how often I see people missing this concept. Most notably coach Lucia. If you disrespect the rivalry component of tradition, tradition is curtailed -

  7. is Nodaks or Sodaks any different than Mizzou?  I bet people would throw a fit if Mizzou was not in existence at this point and it was proposed in a similar process.

The point is unique names sound weird at first.  Bland generic names sound acceptable at the onset but become lame and uninteresting quickly..

  8. Ames, Iowa:

Iowa State University Cyclones (colors: red, yellow)

Ames (IA) High School Little Cyclones (colors: orange, black)

Before right now, did you know (or care) that ISU and the HS in Ames are both the Cyclones?

And better, somehow those Iowegians can keep them straight.

So we're going to start calling RR "Little Roughriders"?  That might be offensive to Asians?!:silly: Color definitely won't be black.

  9. Honestly, I am sick and tired of outsiders telling us what they approve or disapprove of. Screw that. This is about what is good for UND, now and in the future. Keep it up buddy, you are actually making a good case for Roughriders with your constant harping on "GFRR had it first, so we can't use it". If this is the only strike against Roughriders, that makes it look really good compared to the strikes against the other two finalists (Nodaks and Fighting Hawks).

The DS ad was good, but your unintentional advertising is even bettter! Keep it up!!! :p

well at least we can agree that we are in a situation of, as you say, comparing strikes against for each of the names.I think you have to admit a situation where making a choice has mostly to do with the lesser of three evils is not the best way to adopt a new name. That is why Nodaks works. it's not so much about it being this awesome new name replacement for the Sioux as it is, or should we say, can be considered the least consequential decision being forced upon us today.

  10. Red River High School "Riders"

    University of North Dakota" Roughriders"

    Problem solved!!

Did RR highschool give the OK for this or are they being relegated? Cause they are a high school no one cares about.

I'm curious, how many people attend the state high school hockey, football and Basketball championships?

Imagine the day UND Roughriders are playing the Bison in football on the same day RR Roughriders are playing Fargo in football.

    Just seems silly...

  11. With this, aren't you admitting that Nodaks isn't that good and will (need to?) be replaced later.

    History says that's probable.

Added tto not replaced by.  Hence the comparison to Mizzou or Ole Miss.

I'm looking to get through this "adopt a new name" B.S. process as painlessly  as possible. Most people agree that our choices suck.  Nodaks doesn't suck as a secondary nickname as the schools mentioned use two names and as we have used Nodaks in the past.

We can add another name later and do it the right way.  If for nothing else to do it without the help of the Kelley admin.

  12. Glad I could help to fill the void. Mizzou is the Tigers, other similar situations include the Ole Miss Rebels and the Cal Golden Bears. So really, just Nodak isn't a valid comparison. The Nodak Roughriders works.

The comparison is Nodaks to Mizzou or Ole Miss is another great one.  The equivalent to Tigers or Rebels comes later is my point..  If Missouri decided to lose Tigers because their warring affiliation then Mizzou would not go with it,  Each nickname stands alone...

  13. OK so UNDBIZ noticed a void in the separate name threads- good eye UNDBIZ.  Now that we have all established why Fighting Hawks is inadequate and Roughriders won't work,  Here is why you should vote NODAKS:

Last Saturday I was at the CC game. Sitting behind me a Tiger fan tapped me on the shoulder during a time out. I turned around to see an older woman(guessing around 70). She asked me if I had ever heard of a game from way back in Madison Wisconsin where there was a huge bench clearing brawl started because a Wisconsin player went into the North Dakota bench. Of course I said yes I had heard of it and added that it was referred to in legendary fashion as the water bottle incident. Surprised at the fact that I knew of what she was describing she exclaimed, "I was there".

We went o to chat of and on for the rest of the game. Turned out she graduated from 'UW' as she endearingly referred to Wisconsin. She was telling me that Wisconsin had two rivals; North Dakota and Minnesota. She unequivocally declared that North Dakota was really the main rival because of how we played the game compared to Minnesota. She kept saying "Nodak" this and "Nodak" that. It was all with great respect for the competition level and the rivalry. Not a derogatory tone in any of it. Just fond memories of great rivalry games. I did not share with her the name issue or the last three options for a new nickname at all. She simply referred to us as Nodak and she said it respectfully.

My point here is that at that time, chatting with the wise old lady, I realized something, Nodak is ALREADY our name. If you haven't seen the pictures of our sports jerseys with Nodak on them from the 40-50 years ago look it up. So picking Nodaks is like picking no change needed-thank you!

I read Goon's blog post today where he says- Hawks is the, "best choice of three unattractive/bad choices." That is saying a lot Goon. You're picking a bad choice. That is not good. Most people agree with you BTW. The majority of people don't like any of the three. Well consider this then:

If we choose Nodaks as our "official" nickname does it not, given its nature, lend itself to integrating another name at some future time when it can happen more naturally(the way nicknames are supposed to come about, organically instead of by force). You may be wondering what I mean so I will use an example:

The University of Missouri their official nickname is the Tigers(named after a group of pre-civil war militias called the "Fighting Tigers", ironically. Now as most of us know the school is also referred to as "Mizzou" which I bet upon hearing for the first time one would think, "what a stupid, hick nickname". It's not unlike "Nodaks" if you think about it. It's a shortening of a name to a nickname. Happens all the time(right Cags, Pooly?) and is very logical and fitting, especially when it occurs organically like Nodaks did decades ago. But is Mizzou not a cool name as part of the mix of Missouri Tigers? There is no reason Nodaks wouldn't be the same animal, serve the same purpose for us..

So the beauty of going with Nodaks can be summarized as follows:

    1. Allows the University to stay with tradition while ending the NCAA assault.

    2. Allows the University to organically develop another name in the future without having to change names. (oh and yes before any of you radicals get all bent out of whack saying I'm a Sioux hold out and that this could be the Sioux name 'some day. Whatever! Ether the name will be the Sioux or not either way it will be fitting to call us the Nodaks.(just like Mizzou) But more importantly it means that we can have time and a correct 'natural' process to get another nickname that the MAJORITY of people don't dislike.

  14. To those of you here that say you can't have Roughriders because of 2 names in 1 town, you can't look past the end of your own nose. Do you really think anyone outside of Grand Forks really cares if there are 2?!?! This is about North Dakota, not Grand Forks! Get over yourselves and do what is best for the state and how it relates to the state. Nobody in the rest of the state cares about RR. This is representative of the state! How does Fighting Hawks do that. What about the other 1,000 schools that are named Hawks? I live in a small town which has Hawks as their mascot. Do you really care about us? You are in a diner here and someone goes "how did the Hawks do last night?" Can you imagine the confusion? Me neither, so get over the RR thing!!!!!

You can't point the local Grand Forks guy finger at me. I live in Colorado.  I haven't lived in Grand Forks since 1995.  As I said, I could care less about RR sports but that doesn't change the fact that RR sports are followed in Grand forks and the area.  Maybe you and others who don't care about RR should get over yourself.  It's not always about you right?

  15. Alright fine, high school trumps University. Makes no sense where I come from, but perhaps things are different out here.

You're making my point.  One has to trump the other?  The same name is ok if one is lesser the other??

That's not a very conducive situation for a community. It's not like Grand Forks is a Minneapolis with dozens of high schools in the local area.  This thinking sounds like it has the serious potential to become toxic.  Red River doesn't matter?  I could care less about Red River myself but still this is all taking place in a very small community.

  16. Before I begin, let me be clear I am not totally PRO-roughrider or Nodak, I am simply anti-Hawk. I have not voted yet in this second round of voting, and honestly don't know what I will vote for.

So, in response to the video, which I have no clue where it is from (I was the self proclaimed master of references so that makes me sad to say), both of those gentlemen are "Deryl." Fine, great for humor.  In the case of Roughriders: one school named Roughriders is a high school which means is covers the local to regional market? If the University of North Dakota were to adopt Roughriders as a name it would cover the regional to national market, no? So how are the two going to conflict? They certainly don't ever play each other in any sport. Graduates of RRHS may become students at UND in which case it's an easy transition for their Roughrider apparel. The argument of "the same two nicknames in the same town," is nonsense because one is an institution of higher learning and the other is a local high school. At the Frozen Four, or FCS Playoffs, or NCAA basketball tournament, who will care whether there are two Roughriders in Grand Forks, ND? Like at the Frozen Four, which happens more often as of late, whats Buccigross going to say, "The Terriers looked good this season, and so did the Roughriders. The Roughriders of UND of course and not Red River High School, if anyone was confused."??????  I'll bet no one, because I guarantee there will be better things to talk about. I'm just saying, and no offense to the good folks over at Red River, but it's a high school versus an NCAA institution. Who cares.

Now, Hawks? That's an argument where there are 40+ other institutions using the name or a variation of it. That's a real problem.

    I guess I'm ageing myself???

It's from the Bob Newheart show.  "Hi I'm Larry. This is my brother Deryl and this is my other brother Deryl" was a quite well known phrase from sitcom lore back in the early 80's..

Regarding your assertion that because one is high school and the other is college so there will be no meaningful or conflicting association,  Of course there will.

Sat morning questions at Denny's:  Who won the Riders game last night?  Did you go to the Riders game?  The Riders are playing very well right now. on and on.

    The name is taken...

  17. Seriously!  I see many people still into Roughriders??

You can't have two schools with followed (same sports) athletic programs with the same name in the same town.  I know a lot of you think it will work because you like the name, I get it.  But if your brother or sister names their kid a name you like will you pick the same name for your child?  Of course not.  One of the main purposes in a name is identification.  People worry about the how Nodaks will be perceived by others.  What will people think about us having two athletic programs a couple of miles from each other with the same fricking name.  Ludicrous! Just ask Bob...

It's a good name but it's spoken for in town...
