  1. Well, here's my shot at the lines for next year...

    Duncan-Vandy(A)-Oshie

    Forney-Watkins-Trupp

    Kozek-Kaip(A)-Hextall/Hamilton

    Malone-Zajac-Miller/Martens

Hextall and Martens will probably be the ones fighting for PT, but I think Martens could be a nice surprise next year and contribute a bit. Plus this is all assuming Toews makes the jump.

As for defense, I think Lee will go... that leaves

    Chorney

  2. Not to be too complimentary to White Cloud State, but with the recruits they are getting and the coaching they have, I don't think they will remain one and done in the NCAAs much longer.

They are certainly getting some good recruits, but I am interested to see how good SCSU is without Bobby in nets. He kept them in a lot of games over the last 2 seasons, and they also lost Gordon early.

If Weslosky struggles in net, I wouldn't be surprised to see them slip to the 4-6 spot in the WCHA standings.

  3. Trupp is clearly a playmaker, are hextall and malone power forward types or more speedy finishers?

Malone is definitely a power forward.

Hextall will be a Prpich/Kaip type player. Gritty and tenacious with a bit of an edge in his play.

  4. Let's assume Toews leaves but that's all. Which of these forwards do you sit:

    Oshie, Duncan, Trupp

    Watkins, VanDeVelde, Forney

    Kaip, Zajak, Miller

    Hextall, Malone, Kozek

    Hamilton, Martens, Radke

This assumes that Forney shows why he was a top draft pick and also that both Malone and Hextall come in.

I have no idea how good Hamilton so I put him on the bench knowing full well he may be very good and beat out some someone.

My number one concern for next year since the announcement of Oshie, Chorney, and Duncan is goaltending. We need Greico to step up and be able to play 10-15 games without a drop off from Phil. Greico is young so hopefully he can learn good practice habits and even though he may not be the Number 1 goalie, he needs to be able to step in at any time and do it well.

If our only off-season loss is Toews, I think that would delay Malone and/or Hextall coming in for a year. If by some miracle Toews decides to stick around for his junior year, then I would guess that both of those forwards don't come in until 08, especially if Genoway is going to be used as a forward.

Now, if Lee or Finley decide to go as well, then that opens up a dman slot for Genoway, which means that either Malone or Hextall can come in this fall.

It all will come down to the decisions of Toews, Finley, and Lee. Once those 3 decide what they are doing, then Hakstol will know which recruits can come in. I still think that both Marto and LaPoint come in regardless though.

I think we will see noticeable improvement out of Grieco next season. He showed promise in the home SCSU series, and we have to remember that he was a very young frosh thrown into a starter role. He will be fine.

  5. btw lapointe will make a good addition to the bench right by ryan martens or mike forney.

There's no way that LaPoint sits on the bench much next season. He is ready for the college level and will be a great player for the Sioux.

Also, I think we see a healthy Forney do quite well next year in the lineup.

My guess is that both LaPoint and Marto come in this fall.

Which will leave us with (9): Bina, Radke, Chorney, Lee, Genoway, LaPoint, Jones, Finley, Marto

With Radke staying at forward, that leaves us with 8 dmen, which is the magic number. Marto will be the odd man out, but will still get playing time with injuries and whatnot. We need him to get some experience this upcoming year, because the d-corps will be depleted the year after that. Then from the 7 remaining, you either play the 6 the practiced the best that week, or move Genoway up to forward.

That also leaves some extra room should Lee or Finley leave this summer.

  6. As for there being room for players to come in it may get really tight....i believe that marto is one that has to come in though because i think he is approaching the age limit in the ushl and i dont know if there is anywhere else he could go. I could be wrong on the age limit but i do think he is one player that may have to come in even if he wouldnt get a ton of playing time

I think we need Marto to come in this year...if anything just to gain a little bit experience for the next season, when he will be sorely needed.

  7. Yeah and the odd possibility that Finley would leave. Looks like we will be having a few guys sitting out every game next year.

    Yeah, Finley too.

Either people will be sitting or recruits may have to play another year of juniors.

  8. Grand Forks has the the worst drivers I've seen in the entire world, haha. Way too slow and defensive.

That's weird. My wife and I moved from GF to Madison two years ago.

We were both amazed at how retarded the drivers are in WI when the weather turns the slightest bit wet or snowy. A normal 20min commute turns into an hour drive to work just because there are people driving 35mph (or slower) on a 2 lane highway. I never experienced that driving in blizzard conditions in ND, let alone just a small snow flurry.

  9. having duncs and osh back is pretty damn sweet....sounds liek they want #8 more than anyone would ever think....

How are you so sure that Oshie is coming back?

But I agree, that would be quite the team if Oshie, Duncan, and Chorney all stick around.

They would definitely be one of the favorites for the WCHA and NCAA title.

  10. And if no D leave, it also creates a logjam at forward, because Hakstol will almost be forced to put Genoway as a forward (and keep Radke there).

With a top 6 of Bina, Chorney, Lee, Jones, Finley, LaPoint and plus Genoway and Marto, it definitely puts Marto as the odd man out. That's unfortunate that he won't be getting much game experience because we'll need it for 08-09 when Bina, Radke, Chorney, Lee, and Finley will all be gone.

If Toews or Oshie (or both) decide to stay, I wouldn't be surprised if Hextall or Malone stays in juniors for another season.

  11. The Hobey Duncan watch is officially put on hold until this time next season.

Thanks for sticking around for another shot at that title Ryan and Taylor.

Now convince a few more of your teammates to do the same.

  12. I stand by Chorney being the integral cog in 2007-2008.

If Toews leaves, I see the integral cogs of 07-08 being:

    Oshie, Chorney, and Duncan

If those 3 return and we lose Toews, I still think we have a team with a chance at the title.

Put Trupp to replace Toews, and you still have the DOT line. :silly:

Now, if Toews decides to stick around for another year of fun, you have a team that is a pre-season favorite to win the WCHA and the NCAA.

  13. Jonathan will be a pro tomorrow. There is ,in fact, a press conference being scheduled by the Blackhawks. To announce the signing of Toews? I don't know, but sounds feasible. Jonny grew up in Canada watching Don Cherry on Saturday nights. The dream is stepping out on the ice of the Montreal Forum, Maple Leaf Gardens, and Madison Square Garden, not winning the NCAAs. He was the most prototypical NHL forward in college hockey this year. He is ready.

Thanks for two great runs, kid. I'll be pulling for you in the NHL. Join the former Sioux 30 goal club with Parise and Blake!!!!!

Do they normally schedule press conferences to announce the signing of a player?

Even if he is the #3 overall pick.

  14. Jonny - you are a hero to many Sioux fans. Your play exemplifies Fighting Sioux hockey - strong two-way play, speed, strength, and class. Please, do yourself and all of your fans a favor. Stay in the green and white another year. Call up some former college players. Get an idea from those who have made this decision before you if they have any regrets about either staying or leaving school early.

Remember - in college the game is about winning. In the pros, the game is about making money. They may say it is about winning, but it really is all about $$$. In college you are a part of a FAMILY. Your teammates are your brothers. In the pros, you are a part of an organization. Your teammates are your, well, teammmates - at least for a year or so untill they (or you) sign with someone else. The NHL will still be there in 2008. Put yourself in YOUR shoes 20 or 25 years from now. What do you think 39 year old Jonny would say to 19 year old Jonny? I'd bet he'd say "You've got a long career ahead, but only a short time to win a National Title at North Dakota. Stay in school bud. Live it up. Grow, learn about the game, develop friendships, the Blackhawks can wait."

Come back to North Dakota just one more year. Convince the rest of your dynamic sophomore class to do the same. Then, win #8 and become more than just a hero to those who follow the Sioux. Become a Legend. Like the Hrkac Circus, Jeff Panzer, Karl Goerhing, Jim Archibald, Mark Taylor, Greg Johnson, Mike Commodore, your name will be spoken with reverance and awe. As the ghost of Babe Ruth said in one of my favorite movies, "Heroes get remembered...but Legends never die."

    Excellent. :silly:
