I have the same basic problems with all of your posts. You don't let numbers and statistics stand in the way of you assuming things that are not true. Your assumptions are based largely on the fact that you believe that the ACT scores are equally dispersed, which by definition is a bell curve. Based upon your logic, if the average ACT score is 23 as Hammersmith proved, then that means that largest number of students must have a 23. The problem is however that there are minimum requirements for entrance into the university. Based upon what Hammersmith posted, it appears that the lowest ACT score admitted is a 12 (at both UND and NDSU...which seems unbelievable to me but I digress). So if the distribution was normal or "bell shaped" the following would be true: 23 would be the max 22=24 21=25 20=26... and so forth. Based upon the information that Hammersmith provided it appears that the distribution is NOT bell shaped. NDSU 30-36 6.60% 24-29 37.90% 18-23 50.30% 12-17 5.20% 6-11 0.00% If we were to go through the exercise of plotting out all of the ACT points on a graph we could see that the distribution is not a "bell curve". If it was bell shaped the same number of students would have a 6-11 as a 30-36 and since they are not the same.....the scores are not equally dispersed. From the data that we are presented with, it is impossible to tell which incoming class is statistically better... All we have to go on is the average. Since it appears that the distribution of students is not bell shaped, it would be statistically ignorant to boldly state that NDSU admitted subpart students to UND. In conclusion, it just goes to show that being a MD doesn't make you smart. I went to NDSU and graduated with a CS degree. While I can't tell you how to treat a cold, I can tell you how a "bell curve" works.

I love how Oxbow won't let real math get in the way of slamming someone. Use of words like "probably" don't really make an arguement. Also, Oxbow doesn't really understand the concept of a bell curve......I"m glad that someone on this board will use real numbers and analysis to make a point. Any appologies Oxbow? *did oxbow go to UND??? If he did, i wonder if he was on the low end of his "bell curve"

Any truth to this? I believe that at the time UND had not decided to reclassify to D1. If that is true, I do not believe that UNI would have ever agreed to play AT a D2 school.
-
My subtle point is that UND can not be North Dakota's team when the trend is that incoming students are choosing NDSU. You do however bring up a interesting point though... Any info on the number of students who chose NDSU/UND from outside of Cass and Grand Forks counties?
-
It appears that prospective students have spoken. NDSU was named the university of choice among North Dakota high school seniors on the ACT.

Thanks for the laugh! Maybe in hockey but not football.

I live in minneapolis....so yes, i missed it.

winning a d2 national championship in basketball pales in comparison to making it to the ncaa tournament.

I haven't seen any of the advertisement for the new Sioux marketing. I did read the article however and I can't say that I understand the "We are 1. We are North Dakota" slogan. What exactly does "We are 1" mean??? Does it mean 1st year in tradition? D1? Maybe the point is lost on me because I haven't seen it. Can anyone offer clarity?

I'm not going to say that NDSU would or would not beat any of these teams. I will however say that I don't believe that the quality of football in the ranks of 60-119 in D1A is that much different than that of the quality FCS teams. Just like FBS, there not all FCS teams are created equal. If you want to make the arguement that FBS as a whole is better than FCS, I won't disagree with you. However, to downplay FCS as something similar to D2 is really a stupid statement. This is evident by the number of FCS victories (NDSU has 3) over marginal FBS teams over the past 5 years. You don't have to be a great college football mind to figure that out.
-
Just to set the record straight... BCS has nothing to do with D1A. The BCS is a group of conferences. Secondly there are 119 FBS (football bowl subdivision) schools in the country. You can see how they are ranked here. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/foot...ex.html?eref=T1 I would take ANY of the Top 25 FCS teams against the bottom 60 teams. You can call label the FCS however you want but in an age of college football parity, saying that the FBS is better really isn't true. It is true that the BCS conferences are better but the rest of D1A, is no different than FCS.

Thanks for the info. Nice payday.

Let me remind you that NDSU's administration chose to NOT play FBS compedition during its first few years. It wasn't until the last minute when the Gophers needed a game that we accepted in 2006. Bohl's philosophy was to play FBS in the last year of transition
-
Hey DaveK.... For several years prior to the Sioux's transition you talked about how D1AA wasn't really "Division 1". Now that your Sioux are playing TT, I must ask you how that's treating you. I can't help but laugh at your past statements because they look so flippin' stupid right now. Ha! Good luck at TT. It's a big game. I'm interested at the payday also... People on this board are talking 300-350k.... I'll be interested to hear the real number that comes out.

This article was published in the Fargo Forum today. It examines the possibility that NDSU/SDSU could someday renew its rivalry with UND/USD if those schools would be admitted into the Summit League http://www.in-forum.com/Sports/articles/209550 There are however a few inaccuracies in Kolpack's story. These are listed below: First, Kevin didn't realize that IPFW was already transitioning when the core member rules were established. Because of that, IPFW falls under an exception clause and is already a core member. That fact changes some of Kevin's points in his article. Second, Kevin misunderstood the eight-year core member clock. He seems to think it started when the schools began their transitions; it doesn't. It only begins after the transition is complete and the school becomes an active member. NDSU's clock just started ticking a month ago, and both NDSU & SDSU won't become core members until 2016. That also affects Kevin's comment on Great West AQs. In the article, he states that the GWC will be eligible for its first AQs in 2015. The actual date is 2022(HBU's transition is seven years since they're coming from NAIA). I'm not counting football here. They could get an autobid in 2014 if they can find a sixth team because the rules are different for that sport. With this information, Kevin might have written the story differently. He would have probably written about Chicago St. and UTPA as potential members. Since they are already core members, the Summit would likely turn to those schools if forced due the risk of losing the automatic qualifier. All in all, it's a pretty good article and I thought that it would be interesting to UND followers. This is not intended as smack but as a decent update to the landscape of D1 conferences. Thanks to poster Hammersmith on the Bison media blog for this info.

There is a fundamental difference between the Summit and the GWC. The average UND fan DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE. Point in case.... I work with several UND alums who I would classify as being very rabbid fans. When the news broke about the conference, I had 3 coworkers bust into my office spouting on about how UND is doing so much better than NDSU (in its transition) because it found a conference.... After some debate, there was no reasoning with them. I totally understand why UND would want to partner with the other schools however the creation of a "conference" was in my opinion is only a PR move meant to portray the transition to D1 as successful. I can guarantee that MOST UND fans are not as up to speed with what goes on as those who are members to this message board. This fleecing of the general public has worked wonders. The transition for NDSU was difficult and I believe that a good number of NDSU fans are just wanting UND to be genuine with the general public. Nothing more.
-
Why is it that my points are completely lost on several members of this message board..... I was not dissing the great west as previously stated, the football league was good to NDSU. I am just questioning the necessity to join a conference in the first place (for all other sports). That's it. No more, no less. It's not as if i'm slinging mud at UND or its fans.... If I wanted to do that, i'd have plenty to talk about (starting with the mud that was slung at NDSU when joining the Great West to begin with......but I digress). I just wish that people would actually think about what i'm writing instead of just blindly reacting.
-
That noise you hear in your ears right now is my point.....it's passed you by. It's not that i'm ripping the Great West (after all, it has been good to NDSU and it's football program). My POINT is this: If there is a buyout or another opportunity comes up to join a conference, the buyout (whatever that is) is money that was for the most part wasted. The only benefit (as I stated earlier) was that there is some benefit have the ability to win a conference championship. The conference for the most part is not necessary as the "scheduling alliance" could have been kept without all the expenses associated with a conference that will never receive an autobid.
-
I can see the conference championship thing. I wonder if that is worth the potential buyout $$$..... It'll be interesting to see what that is. The conference will benefit UND from a PR front. While the upside of the conference is marginal, the perception will be that UND made it to a conference sooner than NDSU. The casual fan will equate that to success. After all, the UND backers in the GF/Fargo media won't worry about the details when doing their reporting.
-
I am aware of the Great West/Summit connection however I don't necessarily believe that it's a slam dunk that UND/USD could bolt the Great West just because Grom is managing both leagues. My point had more to do with questioning the reason for conference status. - I get the idea of scheduling but that could have been done with a scheduling alliance. - I don't buy the talk of a conference helping with recruiting. - I don't think that there will be an autobid for the playoffs anytime in next 10-15 years (outside of maybe football....) Now, if something does come up in the Summit, UND would be required to stay 3 years in the GW or have a buyout..... It just seems as if it's uneccessary and at minimum a drain on money. Also, Now that Utah Valley State joining the GW, it seems logical that Centenary be dropped and they be added to help with the SUU geographic problem. Might Chicago St. and UVSU be added instead of the UXD's? It should be an interesting 3 years.
-
I've never understood this logic.... How can being in a conference help in recruiting against other D1 schools that are already in conferences. This would make sense to me if you were recruiting against schools who were in a lower division or D1 without a conference. However, since many of those D1 independents are now a part of this conference I think that it's a moot point and really nothing more than a PR statement to help build false expectations in the community. Students who choose UND for athletics will choose based on ALL other factors i.e. fit, academic/athletic programs, scholarships, locations, community, etc. A conference full of teams that have almost no chance of reaching the post season (even after the exploratory period) is NOT a factor in recruiting
-
3 year minimum requirement huh? It seems as if that is a really long time (considering how frequent teams move conferences). What if next year the Summit wanted to expand or replace a school or two? Would UND/USD really not be eligible to change? That would be a huge kick in the nuts if other schools were added but they were not them due to a commitment? I wonder if there is some sort of buyout?
-
I think that the big difference between NDSU's scheduling alliance and the Great West Conference is that NDSU only had an alliance for 1 sport - Basketball. For the most part, NDSU was on its own to find games. UND will benefit from having regular schools visit Grand Forks. While I certainly think that making this a full-blown conference is somewhat unecessary, I don't blame UND and USD for going this direction. IF the landscape of D1 conferences doesn't change in the next 5-10 years, UND/USD could be without any significant conference. Now that they have a recongnized conference they can start lobbying for automatic bids to postseason play (once they are eligible)
-
Any idea if UNI will actually be going to UND to return a game or is that just speculation?
-
attendance predictions? 0-1000 1000-2000 2000-3000 3000+ considering that the only people who know about this game are people associated with both schools i'm going to go out on a limb and say 1-2k.
