No. That's your misintreptation of my words. Expunging the Sioux name from the public view gives people one more excuse to forget. You don't sound like you want people to forget, so why help them?

You've never heard of student athletes? With its new policy on logos, mascots and nicknames, the NCAA claims to be acting in the best interest of student athletes. Maybe you should call Myles Brand and tell him to butt out.

Comparing the nickname issue to slavery, women's suffrage, civil rights or even the more recent Confederate flag controversy simply doesn't wash. This issue has been going on for more than 30 years. Despite that and the amount of publicity it's received, the polls I've seen show that 80 to 90 percent of American Indians don't see the use of Native American names and mascots by sports teams as a problem. This is a major hurdle for your cause to overcome because a large majority of the very people who are the alleged victims of the discrimination and abuse don't recognize it. Either you need to do a better job of convincing them that they are suffering as a result of these nicknames or resign yourself to the idea that perhaps it's not as serious as you think it is.

The very first time I toured the completed arena and saw the Sioux name used in that manner, it bothered me. It went too far.

Sigh... I said that in the process of doing research on the hockey program, I became acquainted with some of the history of how UND adopted the Sioux name. I didn't pretend to be an expert on the subject because I haven't studied it in detail. However, as a result of what I did, I know that the name change evolved over a couple of decades and I know the decision wasn't based solely on the rationale stated in one student's letter to the editor, which is how you characterized it. Just to be clear, I wasn't researching the history of the name. Therefore, I didn't look for information specifically related to that issue. The resources I used included UND yearbooks and other books and publications on the history of athletics at UND. I didn't make any attempt to record any sources because I wasn't writing a research paper.

I'm shocked.

As long as we're demanding free education, I think the state should pay for my son's college education at UND. He is, after all, the descendent of a wrongfully persecuted Catholic Irishman who was forced to leave his homeland by the evil British. There's gotta be something for me in this deal.

That happens on an hourly basis. It's nothing to brag about.

I think I'd need to see a full body shot before I could make that determination.
