If you listened closely to the teleconference, the difference between the way executive committee chair Walter Hill and president Myles Brand spoke and the way Westerhaus spoke are rather interesting. Hill and Brand spoke as if this new policy was a done deal and there wasn't much anyone could do about it. Westerhaus, who's a lawyer with a journalism degree, made it clear that she wasn't speaking as counsel for the NCAA and spoke as if there was a great deal yet to be decided. The contrast was subtle, but it was definitely there. It left me wondering if Hill and Brand were putting the cart before the horse.

I wonder where I can get me some of that illegal protein drink the Gophers use to increase thumb strength.

Star Trib Article on Fighting Sioux/NCAA Ruling

Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly, but I thought Pomeroy, Dorgan and Conrad all spoke in favor of UND keeping the Sioux name the last time it was threatened. Besides, public opinon would be strongly in their favor if they said something in support of the name. I don't see that they'd have much to lose by showing their support. -
It would be just like him to choose "Rod" as his pseudonym.

I'm actually not totally against the name change..

The point is, Ralph did collect more than just Nazi-related items. He had a car owned by Stalin, as well as the Pope-mobile. He also bought Gen. Patton's personal papers and donated them to the Chester Fritz library. -

Here's an article from the Las Vegas reviewjournal.com that discusses the FBI investigations of Engelstad related to his alleged Nazi activities. The one thing the article doesn't do is explain the reasons Ralph collected the Nazi cars and regalia. He was planning to open a section of his world famous auto museum dedicated to historical autos. He also had cars owned by Stalin, Mussolini and Emporer Hirohito. Unfortunately, the focus is always on the two Hitler birthday parties and the Nazi-related items Engelstad collected. -
I think he stayed at a Hoilday Inn Express last night.

There's a forum for this subject and a thread devoted to these types of stories. -
One thing that puzzles me is why, when protests of the name are held on campus, don't more American Indian students don't show up for them? As I recall, the protests usually draw fewer than 100 people, and many of them are non-Indians. With 400 American Indian student's on campus, I'd think that a lot more people would show up to protest an issue that's been compared to slavery and women's suffrage. Or are you saying that there aren't many "real American Indians" at UND? I'm not trying to be flippant here. It's a serious question.

I might still have it. I'll check and let you know.

I agree completely with you on this.

You're taking these statements far too literally. Of course the Sioux won't cease to exist if UND changes it's name. What's far more likely to disappear is desire, motivation and incentive.

Are you saving your changes after you make them? What I do after opening the database files is click on the Team button under the Players tab. That sorts the players by team so that all the players are listed together with their respective teams. You can then scroll to the team of your choice and see all the players listed together. Just click on the player you want to edit and change his settings to your heart's content. Be sure to save the changes before you exit. If you're editing the right files, you should see your changes in effect when you restart the game.

You know what would reallly be ironic? If Southeastern Oklahoma State said it would abandon all the American Indian imagery it uses, but keep its "Savages" nickname. The NCAA would be in a real pickle then because: A. As with "warriors," the word "savages" doesn't apply to any particular race. B. SEOSU has a higher American Indian enrollment than NC-Pembroke. C. SEOSU currently has no American Indian mascot or logo. D. With no references to American Indians, no tribal approval is necessary. Wouldn't it be a hoot if the school with the nickname that everyone agrees is the most offensive gets to keep its name?

The NCAA's answer about the Fighting Irish not being included was also dumbfounding, even though the ban is supposed to include names of national origin. They said it was because nobody had complained about Notre Dame. Okay, great. So how many people have to complain before Notre Dame gets put on the list of The Dirty Dozen and a Half? One? Six? 100? 10,000? How many?
