Is it just my imagination or does somebody sound like he's getting desperate?

I think I saw you taking pictures. You were a few rows below and one section over from where I was sitting.

Scroll up. Click on the link. Read the Herald story.

Yep. I remember seeing that.

Here's a good article on what Central Michigan does to help keep the support of the local Chippewa tribe.

I went to game today and thought UND turned in a very solid effort. West Chester is not a bad team. I was most impressed with the job the Sioux secondary did against the Golden Rams' highly touted receivers. Other than a few breakdowns in pass blocking and Bellmore missing some deep throws to open receivers, I was very satisfied with the effort.

Sept. 3, 2005 From the Grand Forks Herald: NCAA: UND believes nickname stance is 'mainstream' Editorial comment: Note the Herald's editorial comment of putting "mainstream" in quotes. The nationwide backlash against the NCAA and the number of tribes that have come out in support of universities using their names and images demonstrates that Harmeson is correct. A large majority of Americans and a large majority of American Indians have no problem with this practice. The number of people who do is quite small, but quite loud. Those are good question. I've wondered about some of them myself. Operating strictly from memory, it seems to me that at least some of the things Longie mentioned happened around 1994 during Kendall Baker's tenure. Exactly what UND agreed to do and what was verbal and what was in writing, I can't say. There must be stories in the Herald's and Dakota Student's archives about the conditions to which UND agreed. Again, this is from memory, so I could be wrong. Kupchella became UND's president in 1999. Quite early into his tenure, he introduced the new Sioux logo designed by Bennett Brien. That created a storm of controversy. But I don't remember anyone saying that UND had broken a promise to use the geometric logo. I also believe that the new logo became official well before October 2001, although it wasn't in widespread use until the new Ralph opened and the hockey team began wearing the new uniforms. I would guess that the logo referred to in the Spirit Lake resolution -- passed in December 2000 -- is the Brien logo because the resolution says it's in response to the controversy surrounding the logo change. If I wanted to take the time and spend the money, I could go back into the Herald's archives and find the answers to these questions. It'd be even better if the Herald would do a story with a timeline of events to help us understand what Longie was referring to and what UND agreed to.

I would assume that Jesse Taken Alive had at least some reason to believe that Turtle Mountain was with him. Maybe he assumed too much. Or maybe I'm assuming too much.
-
Yeah. Usually players get bigger and heavier just by stepping on the UND campus. Duncan is going the wrong direction.
-
Those schools all look alike to me.

Actually, UND played at Princeton on Nov. 1, 2002. I'll never forget listening to that game on the radio because Tim Hennessy, the voice of the Fighting Sioux, almost got into a fight with the Princeton AD while on the air.

I like the way they list heights and weights. If Jordan Parise is 5-11, then I'm 6-2. If Travis Zajac weighs 205, then I weigh...wait. That doesn't work out so well. Never mind.

Based solely on the news reports I saw, it was UND, then CMU and then Utah. They all came in rather close together, so I'm not sure that the order in which they were received makes much difference. The interesting aspect to this is that Utah asked for the NCAA to decide by today, and the NCAA said it wouldn't. Now it has. What's up with that?
-
That's what I was trying to say, but you said it much better. I think that if Illinois ever files an appeal, the NCAA will have to grant it because of what it did with San Diego State and Florida State.
-
If I could read minds at the NCAA, I could answer your question. But UND was the second school to submit its appeal after Florida State. CMU and Utah followed. I suspect that tonight's meeting of the Spirit Lake Tribal Council will help the NCAA make up its mind.
-
Yes. I have met both Jeanotte and Yellow Bird. I wasn't criticizing them as much as I was pointing out your double standard.
-
I agree. The NCAA can judge each appeal in terms of which schools have tribal approval and which don't, but a court isn't going to overlook the fact that the NCAA has given a pass to some of its members who are engaging in uses of American Indian mascots, names and logos that are the same as or worse than UND's. That is unequal application of a standard that the NCAA set based on the hostility and abuse allegedly caused by racial stereotyping. Either these practices are hostile and abusive or they're not. You can't say that some are and some aren't without unfairly discriminating against some of the organization's members.

I believe that you're referring to one of my posts. Perhaps it was this one?
