  1. :silly:

SUU played the game of their life and still managed to lose. I mean, they can't lose EVERY GAME? Can they? Yes they can. But not losing a game by half time is an accomplishment so way to go! Actually, it was snowy and muddy so it slowed down the game.

Honestly, I think Montana and Montanta State are getting the benefit of reputation. Neither has played a single good team this year except for Montana State who got blown out by Texas A&M. I think NDSU and UND could easily take either Montana's. I mean, we beat them with a D2 team that won 3 games the year before.

I better give SUU credit because this is UND's only link to NDSU. I'm sure you can't wait for us to play them because if we're only up by 3 TD's at half time, you'll say that UND beat them by more. (although you won't point out that conference games are always closer because they have played 4 years in a row)

  2. The system in hockey is completely different than all other sports. The USHL is a junior league. It is all amateurs. The players are either in high school or 1-2 years out of high school. Some leave their regular high school teams, move to the city they are going to play in and live with families. They go to high school and play hockey. Some play a little bit of USHL hockey either before or after their high school seasons. The guys that are done with high school mainly just play hockey. Most of the players in the USHL are trying to land college scholarships. It is possible to go straight to the pros but it is rare. The NAHL is another junior league of hockey. Fargo has had a team in the NAHL for several years. Most people consider the USHL to be a higher level of juniors than the NAHL.

In Canada they have different levels of junior hockey. Major juniors are mainly a feeder system for pro hockey. If a player plays for a Canadian major junior team he loses some or all of his college eligibility. Players from leagues like the USHL often have a choice of playing major juniors in Canada or going the college route in the US. Canada also has lower level junior leagues that are similar to the USHL. The BCHL is one such league with teams in both Canada and the US out on the West Coast.

There are also several levels of minor league hockey which are similar to minor league baseball. The AHL, the ECHL and the CHL are all minor leagues for the NHL. Players from the college level or major juniors are usually the players that go on to minor league hockey, and maybe the NHL.

I didn't know that. It's a unique way but kind of cool way to develop talent. It will definately promote UND hockey if Fargo guys go on to play at UND. Maybe it can generate some local interest in hockey and push NDSU torwards it.

  3. Wow... can you say ignorance?? Or closed-mindedness?? :)

It's people who think like this that make me angry.... At least have some respect for these sports and the athletes that play them... :glare:

Ignorant or closed minded because I don't follow sports I don't like? WTF?

I'm trying to think of an example.

Let's say you rip on Brittney Spears and say her music sucks and she's a freakshow.

Pretend I'm a fan (I'm really not) and I can't believe you don't like her music! How dare you!

I reply that your ignorant and closed minded because you don't like Brittney Spears. You should at least respect the entertainer.

I just want to make it clear that I'm not a fan of Brittney Spears! :D

  4. Gabe01...since you probably don't know this, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux hockey team is ranked #1 in the Nation in Division 1 hockey.

Honestly I didn't know that. Congrats! Shoot me an email when you win the Championship too.

  5. ndsu has always pissed on hockey as a sport so I think with Blaiser in place and the new arena coming up...we can ALL be comfortable with Fargo being a minor league feeder for UND Hockey! :D

I want to be the first to say...THANKS to our neighbors down south for all the future Division I banners you will add to the Ralph!! :glare:

I don't follow hockey so I'm not sure if your being sarcastic or not and I'm probably an idiot...

...but isn't the USHL a minor league team for professional hockey? Won't we see the UND players continue their careers in Fargo?

  6. You say wouldn't care, yet you probably check the scores of all NDSU teams: women's soccer, women's volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, etc. Those sports aren't even "events" at NDSU. Hockey would be an "event" and would have a "buzz". Most NDSU fans would have an interest in how NDSU hockey performed, even if they don't even "like" hockey, just because it would have an "NDSU" label.

The only sports I pay attention to are football and basketball. I have checked the scores of baseball. Wrestling is 2 guys in tights rolling around on a mat. If volleyball and softball were to be gone I wouldn't care and I didn't even know that softball is a college sport. I have never once checked the scores of these sports and if they were to win the national title I really wouldn't care. Same goes with track and all the other bogus sports. Hockey, in my level of interest, is below baseball and higher than wrestling, softball, volleyball, and track. I've probably paid more attention to Sioux Hockey than NDSU baseball but that's pretty easy considering I only check the scores of baseball and the SIoux Hockey team gets on ESPN when the playoffs come around.

  7. A lot of you do feel that way, but there are many others who would welcome with open arms a D1 hockey program in Fargo. Don't you think it's a little disturbing that there are a number of Bison football fans who also support Sioux hockey? NDSU is the most high profile school located in what is considered hockey territory not to have a D1 hockey program. It's a huge void in their athletic department. USC and Texas not having D1 hockey is understandable considering where they are located geographically. NDSU not having D1 hockey is a disgrace considering where they are located geographically.

People that love hockey love hockey and are fanatics. That's cool. I'm just not a fan of the sport. I couldn't name a more than 2 players on the Wild and I don't care to learn about them. I put hockey in the same category as soccer.... I don't have an opinion and I don't care. Actually, when the Wild were in the Playoffs a few years ago I checked the scores but didn't actually watch the games. If NDSU got hockey I wouldn't care

  8. Northern Colorado was the exception, not the rule. Of the four high profile D2 programs to make the jump to I-AA between 2002 and 2004 they're the only one that has really stunk it up. Just because NDSU has been successful in I-AA doesn't guarantee that UND will too, but it makes it appear to be very likely. And if you think otherwise then I think you're the one being ignorant.

It's not a lock that UND will be successful in the transition. I think it's very likely but I would have said the same thing about Northern Colorado. What's going on here?! Civil conversations between Bison and Sioux fans?! :glare:

  9. So why do Great DII schools fall all over themselves & others to become D1 ?

    I'm guessing $$$ :glare:

Dwindling scholorships is #2. More exciting competition and gate draw is #3. Getting a chance at the big dance in basketball is easily #1. Basketball has ten times the potential as football, especially with an auto bid conference.

  10. We'll just have to agree to disagree, but I will say that where I believe your logic is fundamentally flawed is your assumption that competing at one level has anything to do with competing at the next. Competing one year, for that matter, has little bearing on the next. The players and coaches we are winning with now were not present 3-4 years ago(other than Coach Bohl and maybe one other coach) so how does how we did during our D2 days have anything to do with our success now? This is where we disagree, you think that because UND is good/great now that they will be in the future at the next level, all I am saying is that it guarantees nothing, it barely even suggests that you will be. Just a difference of opinion between you and I.

Both teams were great D2 teams. Defining NDSU from 1991-2003 is not fair. It's like not calling the Packers a storied franchise since they haven't won the Superbowl since '95. Here's a fact. The entire NCC was PHENOMENAL during that run and Northern Colorado was arguably the most successful winning 2 Championships. That's how good the NCC was. THey haven't won a conference game in 2 years at the D1AA level, further proof that the transition is not that easy.

Here's a Bison slump... THe Bison won the NCC in '91, '92, and '94, made the playoffs in a tough league in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000. NDSU did beat UND in the playoffs during that run too. And every Bison Sioux game was a barnburner. Not great by NDSU standards but great by anyone else.

The NCC never got the respect it deserved. It's too bad that NOW it is recognized as one of the best conferences in football. You guys got it easy now. No NDSU. No Northern Colorado.

And the year that really ticks me off is one of our best teams, 2003 when we beat Montana and lost 3 games (1 against D1 team) by a total of 8 points and watched Concordia St Paul make the playoffs despite losing to NDSU by 50. Do I sound bitter? :)

  11. don't forget "they" couldn't take the pounding of having to play a BCS team week in and week out :(

It was the toughest conference last year. By the looks of everything, the Gateway seems to be the better conference this year but it's early. SDSU is much worse. Davis lost 15 starters and appear to suck. And like I said before, Southern Utah hasn't won a conference game in 3 years. Strange things happen early in the season

  12. Live in Fargo, but am a Sioux supporter. Saw the Bison play their opener in the UNDome and the Sioux last weekend. Again, I know it was against different levels of competition, but there is know question that UND has more team speed on the offensive side of the ball and that NDSU looked faster on the D side of the ball. Both team pass the "eye" test as far as similar size of athletes. Played next week on a neutral field, I'd say it's a flip of the coin.

I would agree that both teams pass the eye test when your talking about the starters. UND's starters can play with most teams but if they had to start their 2nd team vs the NDSU 2nd team they would get smoked. Depth is the what makes NDSU better. If UND played NDSU in week 1 they would have a chance. If they played them 8 or 9 games into the season they would get smoked, unless they somehow stayed completely healthy. A good example is today. NDSU was down to 3 cornerbacks and none of them were the week 1 starters. How good would UND's defense been today if you were playing your #4-5-6 corners? For that reason I would say NDSU wins hands down if they play late in the season. If they play early in the season NDSU win 3 out of 4. All if they are at home.

Yeah I know your going to say that since UND wins so many blowouts their backups get more playing time. True. But the quality of athletes drop off big time when you go 2 or 3 deep on the depth chart. Consider this. When you make the move to D1, your not going to have a lot of cup cake games so your starters are going to have to play full games thus increasing their chances of getting hurt.

When UND makes the jump to the max in scholorships, only then will they have the depth to compete with NDSU over a full season.

The NDSU defense is faster. Dressler kind of obscures the speed test because he's blazing. The offensive styles are polar opposites so it's tough to say. The West Coast offense is more horizontal vs vertical. Each team kills the opponent in a different way.

  13. These Bison nuts are annoying. We all know we own the Bison and are twice as good. As I keep saying, we'd beat those idiots by 30. It is quite obvious that CMU is not as good as Southern Utah. What morons!

I really hope your being sarcastic because if you truely believe that, you should go back and get your GED. I can't figure out which part is the most silly. UND beating NDSU by 30 points or Southern Utah beating the MAC Champs CMU?

BTW, way to allow 42 points tonight to Western Washington.

  14. I think you hit the nail on the head. UND played the #4 team in a division above them and won a close game. NDSU played a bottom level teama division above them and blew them out. I would consider it a wash. Central was good last year because of their coach. Now that he has left, they are back to the same old crappy MAC teams that anybody can beat. There is a reason the Directional Michigans are a staple of the Bottom Ten poll on ESPN.com.

The MAC Champions and Motor City Bowl winners are not HORRIBLE teams. No, they are not in the same league of the big time teams but they would be among the best D1AA teams. Your school doesn't have 82 scholorships, have 7 current players in the NFL right now if your untalented. The Gophers are 1-1 against MAC teams and should have been 0-2. Yeah the Gophers suck but they are in the Big Ten. Lets see how they do tonight on ESPN. They'll probably get spanked. :) bad comparison.

  15. Well good for NDSU. Congratulations on smoking a crappy CMU team. They really aren't that good though so I don't see why you should be allowed to get excited about it. Get over it. It's not an accomplishment at all.

Well, if NDSU can beat the 2006 MAC Champions and Motor City Bowl winners by the same margin as UND beats Southern Utah and it's not an accomplishment....than I'm baffled. I must not know football at all. I'm not shocked that we beat them but I am shocked that we blew them out of the water on their own field and backup QB Nick Mertens got to finish out the game.

  16. What exactly do you want out of Sioux fans? You keep coming back here talking about how wonderful NDSU is and how nothing UND does is worth crap, so what do you want us to do? I'll certainly do it if it gets you to leave.

Here's what it will take for me to leave. Don't beat a crappy D1AA team and act like your way better than NDSU. I'm saying it right now. You guys will be a great D1AA team. Winning a game against a D1AA team is tough but winning every week, including games against D1A teams is even harder. Both teams rock.

  17. by the inference they're "not very good" and the fact you have them at home should be a +.5 rating...either beat them by a score of 55-15 or I guess we know where the nickel should STAY for a time TBD

Wow. Southern Utah lost to Southern Illinois 44-10. I'm telling you these guys are horrible.

    Southern Utah

  18. What poll are you looking at? The only poll that I find legitimately correct(as well as some meaning) on D2 ranking is the American Coaches Football Association and they had Tarleton State last ranked at #22 on September 4th of last week(before that they weren't even ranked). So please enlighten us on what poll your referring to cause in all of the polls that I've looked at I see Tarleton State being no where close to being ranked #7.

    Tarleton State is currently #5

    Preseason poll: #17 http://collegesportsreport.com/Football%20...D2/D2_01_07.htm

    week 1: #17 http://collegesportsreport.com/Football%20...D2/D2_02_07.htm

    week 2: #8 http://collegesportsreport.com/Football%20...D2/D2_03_07.htm

    week 3: #5 http://collegesportsreport.com/Football%20...D2/D2_04_07.htm

I still think SFA is a weak team but it's not like they "got blown away by a bad unranked D2 team." They lost by 3 in a close game. The Bison beat them by 10 despite losing the turnover battle 5-0, put up 600 yards of offense, and ran for 8 ypc. Like I said before any other week they win by 40. They return 2 starters this week that were suspended. I expect NDSU to win this week by 4 TD's against a better team.

  19. It is ridiculous to try to compare NDSU and UND at this point in time. What is important to remember is current history not the glory days of the steriod 80's of the Bison. Lennon was 4 out of 5 against the Bison and the real reason the Bison went to D1 is they couldn't compete for the same athletes with UND anymore.

Yeah the Bison went D1 in ALL SPORTS because they couldn't compete with the Sioux in Football. :D Considering they lost the last game to UND back in 2003 in OT, I don't think that's a fair statement.

Even back when we were D2 with half the scholorships we always played each other tough. Every game was close. Last 5 meetings.

    2003 - Lost in OT

    2002 - Lost 6-12

    2001 - Lost 7-19

    2000 - Won 16-13

    1999 - Lost 10-13

UND has never played NDSU team with 63 scholorships.

So why is UND going D1 then? For the same reasons as NDSU... more scholorships, money, exposure, and competition. Plus a better chance of making the playoffs because the D2 system is a joke. Remember back in 2003 when NDSU missed the playoffs and Concordia St Paul made it depsite losing to NDSU 58-24.

  20. Tarleton State # 7 in lastest poll. But I have to agree SFA isn't a very good team.

So SFA lost to the #7 ranked team in D2 by 3 points and they suck?

By Sioux fans logic... #7 D2 Tarleton State should beat NDSU by 20 points.

And UND's backups will get a lot of playing time against Crookston. Problem is, Crookston sucks so when they play good teams the backups will get they ass whooped.

  21. Its funny that the bison fans talk about how easy D2 is, like they were never D2. I was just wondering where the nickel is? But i suppose it dosent matter any more, Since your a bigshot D1AA team now. I guess the sioux fans and players are bad people because we played a bad D1AA team.

Yeah we were in D2 once and we won 7 more NCAA Championships than you guys too. No I'm just messing' with ya. I know for a fact that the Sioux would be competitive with D1AA teams right now. At least they would early in the year. I'm convinced there is not a lot of differnce between the starters on a D1AA team and a top D2 team. But it's the depth that they can't match. Point is UND's starters are as good as most D1AA starters but their backups see a big time drop because they don't get scholorships and are generally walkons. If UND would play a team like Northern Iowa in the playoffs they would probably lose because UNI has superior depth and can field a solid team after the wear and tear of the regular season. You guys won a close game last time in week 2. How good would this team be if they lost 5 starters? Notice how UND has never played a D1AA team LATE in the year? Why? Because they know they could not match the depth. Of course the Bison played the Gophers after 7 games and still almost won even though the Gophers have nearly 90 scholorships.

Anyway.. wasn't trying to rip on ya'll for beating SUU. I was just annoyed that some of you think it's a big deal to beat a bottom feeder 1AA team. It's not.

predictions? if NDSU and UND played next week it would be a really good game. I'd of course give NDSU an edge and I'm confident they would win a close game. If UND played NDSU 7 or 8 weeks into the season, they would lose because they don't have the depth NDSU has with more scholorships and all. UND's 2nd stringers can't compete with our 2nd stringers across the board.

  22. Before everyone gets exited about the bison winning their game against SFA....remember this.

SFA is not a decent D1AA team. They lost to a D2 team pretty handly. They were on third stringers. SFA is a crappy football team. How many coaches consider beating a team like them at home a good victory? By saying this you are further proving that their isnt much difference in D2 and D1AA. So the bison can step down into the real world and realize that their schedule gets no harder than the UND's. So step off your high horses all you bison fans.

Oh and SFA didn't lose to a D2 team handily. They lost by 3 points and outgained them in pretty much every statistical category. It was also their first game with a new coach. They play that crappy D2 team a lot so they are familiar. So are you saying that D2 teams are not good? I didn't say it. You did.

  23. i do believe this is a measuring stick for whenever ndsu plays suu

Not true. Conference games are always close. The Bison have played SUU 3 times so they know each other. It's a reality of football. This is the first time the Sioux have played SUU.
