  1. It's pretty stunning that the UND Div II coach ends up going to a higher paying job with a school in the same conference NDSU is joining - where are the offers for Bohl? Why aren't falling all over themselves in IA to get Bohl?

    BobIwabuchiFan

As I Bison fan I hope he never leaves or never gets an offer. I'm glad they aren't falling over themselves to get Bohl. It's their loss and hopefully Bohl sticks around as long as Lennon did.

There was an article in the Forum 2 weeks ago that said Taylor wants to make the NDSU head coaching job one of the 3 highest paying in the FCS. Bohl already makes more than the head coach at Montana.

I think the Southern Illinois job is on the same level as NDSU. Lennon is a great coach too.

  2. As logical as it seems to promote from within... let me throw this at ya.

Right now your heading into the transition with a great team that will compete right away. It's exciting but the games are meaningless.

Wouldn't this be the perfect time to bring in the best qualified outside candidate and to work toward building a championship program by 2012? It's a case of taking a small step back to take a step forward.

If you promote from within, you run the risk of hiring a guy that is unproven and inexperienced and you don't want to find out he sucks in 2 years and start over in 2010.

NDSU went from a 3 win team under Babich to a 9 win team that beat Montana under Bohl in his first year. That was with a brand new coaching staff across the board.

  3. Why don't we go after Bohl? He has done well down at "MOO U" and why would anyone want to work there when they could be at UND?

He seems like the obvious choice and the way to get our program back on its feet.

Lennon made around 100K. He left for a 200K total pakage. Right now, Bohl makes a total package of 200K and according to the Forum, they want to make the NDSU coach one of the 3 highest paid in FCS football which means he should be getting a raise closer to 300K. I don't know if your being sarcastic but Bohl is out of your price range.

Now if we were talking about Hockey it would be a different story.

  4. I would be extremely disappointed if Lennon doesn't give at least an apology to his players. They deserved better than what they got from him regarding this.

Apologizing for moving up the food chain? I have never apologized for taking a promotion. I have never had a boss apologize to me for taking a promotion. He doubled his pay. THAT is a promotion!

  5. Well considering UND didn't offer Vetter an official visit or a scholarship, and offered a scholarship to Edem after his official visit, I would think the UND staff thought he was better. Add the fact that he had full ride offers from Ohio and Montana would lead me to believe Edem was more highly recruited. Whether or not that means he is better will be known in the next few years. Having said all that, it looks as though they offered the right kid IMO. Edem and Wisthoff should be a great combo for the next 4-5 years.

NDSU or Northern Iowa recruited Tracy but they didn't offer him a scholorship either. It was probably the same type of deal with Vetter where the player wasn't as receptive. There are usually other factors although kids in rurual ND are rarely offered by big schools like Montana. (although NDSU and UND are ab out the same as Montana in my eyes) I have a tough time believing UND would have no interest in a 6-foot-4, First Team All-State defensive end who is only 215 lbs with the frame to add another 30. He got letters fromHarvard and calls from Princeton so you know he has the brains. EIther way good signings by both teams.

  6. Horner couldn't beat out Solum in high school. Apparently he didn't think there was any point potentially subjecting himself to the same thing in college. In all seriousness, I would have liked to have gotten him, but really never expected to.

Not trying to create some smack but NDSU offered Solum a scholorship but only as a defensive back ....not a running back. NDSU felt he wasn't a D1 starter at running back. They feel Horner is. Of course Horner didn't have quite the O-line either but still managed 12 yards per carry. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?sectio...&id=2717948 So Solum isn't good enough to be backup at NDSU but he's good enough to be a starter at UND. I'M KIDDING!

  7. Hey I just wanted to let everyone know that you can for for college coach of the year here at <a href="http://www.coachoftheyear.com" target="_blank">http://www.coachoftheyear.com</a>

You can vote for Dale Lennon, and Craig Bohl, or any other local coaches. This has been going around the other message boards and it helps alot.

"In 2007, we'll name a Coach of the Year in each NCAA Division: DI, DIAA, DII, and DIII. The winners will each receive $50,000 toward the charity(s) of his choice and $20,000 for his school

  8. While he is probably considered a project, like most all lineman at this level, McGurran has a TON of potential and upside. I think this is a great find for UND and I believe he will have a big impact on the o-line in the future. Some people are going to say that this was a "PR" recruit because of his dad being a former player and alum, but he is much more than that. Great start so far with the commitments. Taking care of our back yard first.

He's a good player. His dad was a UND guy so it's tough to compete with that. Good signing.

  9. \

Much more than 90% of this board.

It's the same at NDSU. Trust me I go there once a month for work and I have to go in the belly of this campus. And I grew up on a farm but the last thing I want in college is something to remind me of cleaning manure from the barns every second I walk to class. I've played at SDSU also and the campus is a mirror of NDSU. No disrespect but those two schools are Ag related and with that comes barns and the smell. Coach Lennon is heads above all three schools (NDSU.SDSU and USD) when it comes to a class act. And I know the Yellow lovers will bash me for this but it is the truth. Lennon with 63 full will be almost unfair!

NDSU does not smell like a barn. What are you two years old? I go to NDSU for engineering and the only Ag buildings are way out by the airport. Ag is a very small portion of the school now. That's why they changed the name to the Bison, oh 80 years ago.

BTW... I think you forget that most farmers make a s&!t load of money. My grand father farmed for 60 years and retired a multi millionaire. He made a hell of a lot more than air traffic controllers do.

  10. No smack intended but when I went down to USD for the game, I stopped at Brookings because I hadn't seen the campus or town. The first time I opened my door, a very foul stench hit me like a bag of bricks. And thats saying something for someone who grew up on a farm. As for the campus, my friends thought it looked like a bunch of army barracks. I don't think any reasonable player would choose SDSU over UND when the stakes are even.

SDSU is spending 15 million to overhaul the football stadium and it's going to be pretty nice from what I read. THey are building an athletic building overlooking the field too so it should feel more enclosed. Their outdoor stadium was decent before but I'll take it any day of the week over the Alerus Center after they overhaul it. I enjoyed outdoor football it had a great atmosphere. The Alerus Center aint too shabby. The Dakota Dome is a joke.

  11. When we played Southern Utah they got their 10 points in the last 4 minutes of the game against our 3rd or 4th stringers. The Bison game with Utah today was still very competitive at half time. Utah was basically never competitive with us the whole game. We were playing Utah on the road and the Bison had them at home too. On the post game of the Bison game today a couple people called in and were wondering why some of the #ones were still playing on the Bison defense at the end of the game. They said they were thin on defense at certain positions. I suppose they didn't trust some of the backups and were trying to keep the points scored by Utah to a minimum.

Yeah but the SUU game was a big deal for you guys because it was against a D1AA team so you guys were really jacked up. They didn't take you as seriously because of the D2 statues.

Today, SUU was facing the #1 team in D1AA so they were jacked and this was their Superbowl. When your the top dog everyone wants to beat you. Target on back.

Your coach was psyched that you guys won by 27. Bohl was extremely disapointed we only won by 35.

Like I said before, the division games are huge. SUU plays us every year and has tape and tendencies. Not that it mattered because we whooped ass but it's still a valid point! If you disagree than you simply don't understand football at an advanced level. I know you understand this but your just trying to piss me off

I think NDSU was annoyed to be playing these guys. They didn't play their 2 best players, started numerous backups, and had to get an ass chewin' from the coach at half time. They responded by putting up 28 points in the 3rd quarter alone with mostly backups.

The only legit starters we had in during the 4th were our cornerbacks. Why? Injuries. Because our starters are the nickel and dime starters to begin the season. They could start a freshaman but they don't want to lift the redshirt so they are thin.

Do I need to remind you that it was UND that ran up the score on Western Washington! Who throws a risky TD pass when your up by 14 and in field goal range with less than 2 minutes left on the clock. Yeah, like that wasn't a losery thing to do. Maybe trying to cover up the fact that WW could move the ball at will on the defense to make the score look better. NDSU ran dive plays the entire 4th qtr today and didn't score. Of course when your up by 35 that's the classy thing to do.

  12. You mean the Sioux-SUU game (where the Sioux had like 5 turnovers) or the NDSU-SUU game?

    NDSU +35 over SUU - 3 pts for homefield = + 32 pt advantage

    UND + 27 over SUU + 3 pts for away game= + 30 pt advantage

Comparative score: NDSU by +2 on a neutral field.

Yeah but you forgot to throw in 3 points in NDSU's favor since it's a divisional game. These guys see each other every year. And be sure you START the game without Chapell and your best defensive player and let your 4th string wideout play in the 1st quarter. For the love of god can we not talk about SUU! THey suck! We both kicked their ass. We don't even run a flashy offense and we dropped 55 points on them!

  13. Hmmmmm... So Sioux hockey averages more fans per game than basketball at all three of these schools combined, and yet those delusional Bison fans still insist that basketball is more popular than hockey in our neck of the woods?

No. NDSU fans have been saying that baskeball has 100X the potential as hockey. The MidCon has an auto bid to the Final Four, which of course generates BIG TIME publicity and money if you can win a game or 2. Your talking the lead story if NDSU wins 1 or 2 games in the tournement. Hell, when NDSU beat Wisconsin it was lead story on ESPN. College hockey is just not a lead story type of sport. And that's not being disrespectful.

  14. In the same league? If you say NDSu's football program is in the same league as a 7 time NCAA Division 1 Champion and stepping stone to professional hockey for dozens and dozens of athletes, you need some help. Objective or not, your facts just don't add up.

You misunderstood what I was saying....

I'm saying the sport of hockey itself is not in the same league as football. For that reason, football has more upside than hockey. Yeah, between the 2 teams, there are 15 National Championships so we're all rock stars.

  15. I'm a Bison fan so I'll try to be as objective as possible. It's tough to say.

UND Hockey is huge and I think it's still a tad bit bigger than NDSU Football. Especially on a national level. The problem is, hockey is not in the same league as football for overall popularity and I think UND hockey has peaked. NDSU football can get way bigger in time and it's already in the same league as UND Hockey. NDSU Football has been on the rise for the last 3 years so I don't think it's fair to give the Gophers credit for the fact that we will probably sell out every game this year with most of them on TV.

I think I'm being objective. Anyone disagree?

  16. Not sure what you meant by the question. It may mean I have a role at a high school where kids are recruited by both guys and I think they both do a good job. Our HS coaches (who are very good and highly respected) speak highly of both of these guys. (My kids ACT score was over 30 so he was overqualified to go to the AC and he wasn't good enough in FB to play at either school). I did have the pleasure of telling Bohl he didn't belong on the sideline of our HS team during the game when he was recruiting and he was polite enough to leave without incident.

Some of you guys remind me of the 5 yr olds who keep having to compare their manhood and think if they stretch the hell out of their monkey that makes them better than someone else. They are both good coaches and recruiters and to say otherwise would lead me to believe that person has no clue as to what they are talking aobut . The records of both coaches speak louder than my or your observations.

I don't know why but for some reason I suspect you are full of s&!t. Your statement has zero credibility.

  17. I wish Sioux fans would take enormous pride in beating a 1-7 team. NDSU beating the Gophs is akin to the Sioux beating Southern Utah. The Bison won against a team that they are better than. Period.

Yeah if that's the case than where were the Sportscenter highlights of the Sioux beating Southern Utah in front of 3,000 people. Seriously man - that's the worst comparision ever.

SUU has never won a confernce game in 3 years and have been a bottom feeder since day one.

Minneota has gone to 5 straight bowl games. Yeah their record sucks but we're talking about a team that has one of the top offenses in all of College Football. While their record was 1-6 going into the game, they lost 3 games by a total of 5 points (2 in OT) and easily could have been 4-3 coming into the game. They played Purdue and Northwestern competitively. Bottom line is they are Big Ten and play teams with 90 scholorships every week.

Honestly I think UND would be competitive against the Gophers too and that's a compliement.

Ask yourself this. Rewind back to 2002. The Bision were coming off a 3 win season. The Gophers were on the rise and were coming off the 2nd of 5 Bowl games. If I were had told you that 4 years later NDSU would almost beat the Gophers and in 5 years they would dominate them.... who would have thought I had been smoking crack?? This is a huge accomplishment no matter how bad the Gophers are.

I hope you guys get your shot because you will need it to keep your spirits up not going ot the playoffs.

  18. Probably the WORST TEAM EVER in the big 10 but okay - I'm giving you props! what's the problem? IDK(sic) you want to compare scores...I'd think ndsu hosting suu should result in at least TWICE the points UND piled on them on their homefield (after all - we're climbing the HUGE ladder to FCS!!) So next weeks results (especially after this weeks big10 win should be...)

    ndsu - 74

    suu - 20

(anything else would be open to debate! :D )

That's not really fair though because it's a division game and we've played them every year. Division games are always closer. WIth that being said, we should beat SUU by 50 points.

  19. I root for und in hockey and I'm a big time bison fan. you've got a lot of balls to tell me i'm not a real fan considering i haven't missed a home football game in 5 years. You've got a lot of ball to rip on fellow Sioux fans too. And to call BIson and Sioux fans supporters of the Taliban is so idiotic you should get your ass kicked by Bison and Siioux fans.

  20. Well, it looks like a repeat of last year's playoff setup for our squad. A first round game at home, then a trip to Allendale to end the season (unless Omaha or GVSU lose a game down the stretch). And if the season ended today, South Dakota would probably get bumped out in favor of Winona State because of that "earned access" crap. But a lot of things could happen between now and playoff selection time.

This is one of the reasons us Bison fans were glad to leave D2 behind. I remember, I think it was 2003, we had a kick ass team. That was the year we beat Montana. We had 3 losses by a total of 6 points. 2 were in OT and one was against a good D1AA team. (it was Davis)

Sure enough, Concordia St Paul ends up making the playoffs with the same record. Turns out the Montana game didn't really count for anything. We beat Concordia St Paul by 50 points while we didn't even make the playoffs. What a crap system.

  21. Wow, he must have read my mind:

Take a look at the entire schedule for the Bison this year and the records of their opponents. At this point the records of the opponents are 20-41! You certainly can't blame the players for this, but it does take away from that ranking with only two of the eleven teams they play with a winning record.

Man I just can't stop coming back.

He's twisting the facts and trying to manufacture something to take a jab at NDSU. He's taking the record of every team NDSU is going to play (even the one's we haven't played yet) and using that as a losing record.

It's not who you play... it's who and how you beat them.

    Fact:

NDSU easily beat Central Michigan by a larger margin than Purdue. We all assumed that CMU sucked? Well, they are currently in 1st place in the MAC with a perfect 3-0 conf record. How strong is the MAC? CMU beat Ball State by 20. Ball State almost beat #8 Michigan the week before. The Gophers almost lost both games to MAC teams but managed to squeak one out. CMU did win a bowl game too.

    Fact:

NDSU easily beat Western Illinois, a ranked Gateway team who's perfect in the conference and only other loss was to the Big Ten's Illinois, 21-0. Western Illinois, had a 10 year home winning streak of non conference games... until NDSU came to town.

    Fact:

NDSU pretty much dominated every other game, except the Sam Houston game.

Then he talks about how the Bison would be a solid NCC team and struggle against South Dakota and Western Washington.

Last time I checked NDSU smoked UC Davis and Western squeaked out a win in week 1, the week strange things happen like Appy beating Michigan. However, the writer didn't point out that McNeese state blew South Dakota out of the water by 30 points. McNeese is in the Southland Conference, home of Sam Houston and Stephen F Austin. NDSU would beat South Dakota by 50 right now. NDSU would beat McNeese right now. Infact, NDSU has never lost to a team from the Southland Confernce. (I think 5-0?)

This guy should be titled, "Sioux Homer" instead of an objective writer. I'm suprised they allowed such unprofessional crap on a legit webite. It shows how ghetto D2 football really is. I've seen better reasoning skills here.

And yes, like I"ve said before, if the Bison/Sioux played right now it would be a good game. NDSU would probably win a close game if it was early in the year but win by more if it's late in the year. But strange things always happen at Bison/Sioux games so who knows.... (last 3 games decided by a few points)

  22. We don't care - you've moooved on remember - why do you keep coming here with your drival - get over us, we've gotten over you.

Uh, a Sioux Fan started this thread so I'm obligated to jump in. We've moved on. In case you haven't noticed, we're ranked #1 in D1AA and have sold out 4 consecutive games. We've moved into the elite Gateway Confernce too. I would consider that moving on in a big way. Depsite the success, I follow regional football too, especially the Sioux because it's good football and it's interesting talking Bison Sioux. We all know we will play again some day. Some want to see it others don't. Why avoid it. It's funny because any Bison/Sioux post is still the biggest thread. You can't erase a hundred year rivaly (or passion) in five.

I'll quit buggin you guys for a while. Like the other poster said, let's just agree that there is some damn good football being played in the state of ND.

  23. Offensively, they run a 50-50 run-pass offense. The passing portion is a vertical-style game and in no way resembles the West Coast offense. Lots of post patterns, flag routes, and quick outs. The strength of the offense is the O-line which is equally adept at pass protection and run blocking. They open big holes for a shifty and fast RB who reacts to defenders and makes amazing cuts.

Defensively, UND runs the 3-4 and is geared to stopping the run, and neutralizing the short passing game. They have fast athletic linebackers that are more suited to run containment and pass defense than rushing the QB. The secondary largely plays a man-on-man scheme rather than zone.

I won't speculate on who would win if we played this year, but my personal opinons on the two teams are as follows:

NDSU has a much better defense than UND.

UND has a much better offense than NDSU.

UND has better players at every skill-position than NDSU, except punter.

NDSU has a better defense, a slightly better offense, and better special teams. The only reason UND looks like they play so fast on offense is because the D2 defenses they play against are flat out slow and non athletic. They are not on the same level as D1 NDSU. NDSU players would look blazing fast against Manakato too.

NDSU is a good match for a vertical offense. They have a superior pass rush and would welcome the opportunity get after a non scrambling QB after weeks of chasing around scramblers.

  24. That grad has more money in the bank than you! :p

Yeah, the big time Vegas architect who's worth millions, just donated millions to NDSU to buildd a new center because he credited them with his development. I'm sure he makes a hell of a lot more than the schmuck on this message board.

  25. Ouch, that's gonna leave a mark. :silly:

Your using week 1 as the benchmark and we all know teams suck week 1. Appalation beat Michigan. Davis lost to Western Wash. NDSU barely beat a crappy SFA.

And UND ran up the score on WW, throwing a TD pass when they should have taken a knee and NDSU barely threw a pass in the 4th qtr of the UC Davis game so we can win with class.

I'll use that argument to our advantage.

Appalation beat Michigan. Michigan beat Notre Dame. NDSU is ranked higher than Appalation. Therefore, NDSU should beat Michigan and Notre Dame.

Purdue beat MAC Central Michigan by the same margin as NDSU beat them. Therefore, we should be able to beat Purdue.

Of course, if Purdue can put up a better fight against Ohio State, we could make the argument we could go out and win the Big Ten.

Central Michigan destroyed Ball State. NDSU beat Central Michigan. Ball State almost beat #10 Nebraska. Therefore, NDSU can play with Nebraska.

Don't forget, it was either UC Davis or Poly who beat Stanford a few years ago. Stanford beat #2 USC last night... Of course, NDSU has beat both of those teams.

This is silly. I'm going to fight for a Rose Bowl invitation. Maybe it could be NDSU and UND?
