  1. I think this is a great thing for the Summit League conference. Basketball attendance will spike with 4 rival games in a meaningful conference game setting.

The scheduling will be better with 4 possible travel partners.

The conference tournament in Sioux Falls is going to be bat !@#$ crazy.  It's already one of the best and with you guys join it's even better. 4 teams within driving distance plus Omaha.  And 4 fan bases that really don't  like each other. What's not to like?

The only negative is non conference games will be tougher to get.

Hope whoever ran into the kicker feels like crap, because now we all do....that completely turned the game. If he doesn't do that we likely win.

In all fairness,  the bad spot and replay official blew the play before.  Should have been a 1st down anyways

But either way impressed with the team

  3. I really like this class. Bubba is doing what he said he would. Heart and soul from the Midwest sprinkle in the rest. I also like the 3 toba kids. If UND can get the top 2-3 Winnipeg kids each year that would be awesome. It's a huge untapped football market that is getting better, and UND has a strong history there.

I do have a question for both UND and NDSU fans. As someone who follows local HS football it appears to me Bubba has the better crop of local kids (ND/Northern MN) than NDSU. I realize NDSU has a much better class on paper and from the Twin Cities but I'm just talking ND/Northern MN. In my opinion the HS football in this area is getting better and better and this year had a lot of talent. Curious from those in the know why they think that is?

    - NDSU going more national?

    - UND offering more money

    - Bubba/Schmidt/Rudolph all being from and putting more focus on ND

    - Kliman/Hedberg not as good in ND as Bohl/Vigen

Just curious because i watch enough football to know Lawrence, Heidelbaugh, Grady (was an NDSU offer), Blackwell, Hartness twins would probably all be NDSU scholarship offers most years. Ellefson is far and away the top local kid after Johanasson but I think I would take Jade Lawrence over both Robbins and Brooks. I also really like Blackwell and Tristan Hartness at WR. In his highlight video there is a clip or two of Hartness outrunning Ty brooks, impressive. Blackwell didn't have a QB otherwise his stats would've been better, Hartness had his bro.

Curious what some thoughts are? Whatever the reason NDSU's loss could be UNDs gain with the local talent.

Im a Bison fan. I think it's a byproduct of NDSU getting a higher than usual number of high profile players. Dont take this as a slam but UND is struggling vs all the Dakota and MVFC teams right now so it appears Bubba is taking the developmental approach. It's not as sexy as getting the bigger name guys but it works. You just need to be patient.

I also think that UND will see a benefit if NDSU keeps getting the higher profile guys. Not necessarily any better or worse for NDSU,  just a reality.  I personally hope we always stick to ND kids and I think we will. We have 2 or 3 which isn't that down

  4. I think UND is doing a solid job this year and I like the way Bubba is changing the program but to say NDSU is "declining" in recruiting is kind of silly.

NDSU has 9 players who have FBS offers.

Bruce Anderson, Demaris Purifoy, Ben Ellefson, Trenton Mooney, Bryan Carlton, Jack Darnell, Aaron Mercedal, Dominic Davis, and Jaxson Brown.

Most importantly we are doing exceptionally well in the traditional  midwest footprint - 15 out of 18 coming from that area.

Minnesota is doing as good as ever before with 3 KARE 11 Metro players Robbie Grimsley (Gatorade POY),  Marquise Bridges and Dimitri Williams and the aforementioned Carlton, Darnell, and Ellefson.  I read something that NDSU has something like 6 or 7 of the top 30 players in Minnesota.

And the rest of the players all have offers from the good midwest teams s like like SDSU, UNI, Montana, Montana State, and Illinois State plus teams like USD and UND.

  5. It would only be adding a trip to Grand Forks every other year. It also gets them an extra home game against a D-1 school who happens to fill their gym when they play every year instead of every other year. Seems to make sense to me.

Makes sense to play every year for a non revenue sport. It's not like we would lose out on some epic non conference game. It's volleyball. Both teams hate losing so getting a 2nd chance is a big deal for the teams

  6. Wow people's comments for both teams are pathetic. Let's all be happy a good game will be played. Seriously can we all not bicker about dick sizes and egos. It's a downer. I'm an NDSU fan and I am happy for the game. No further comments needed

  7. I'm not into fee_ing trolls but I just have to correct a couple things. Having traps like Walker an_ running like him are totally _ifferent things. Those three special I listed are re_shirting an_ have no impact on this years team.

Sorry I _I_n't realize those guys were re_shirting. As a Vikes fan, I'm sickene_ by the name Walker. We built the _allas _ynasty by ourselves. To a__ insult to injury, he resigne_ with _allas to en_ his career!!!

_own with the _allas Cowboys _ynasty!!!

  8. So let's say Mussman gets canned after the season. Obviously Faison can make a mean sales pitch with the facilities and the coming upgrades. But what caliber of pitch can be made in terms of talent on the team that will return?

    Offense.

-There appear to be a few fr hogs that could be special (Miller, Stockwell, and Bell). Anderson is a very good play and could slide out to tackle if he has to. Walker has been pretty inconsistent at center and had a rough game against Sac St but has been pretty solid at times.

-WR is obviously stocked full of talent and Carr and McGill will add to the depth next year in the absence of Hardin.

-At RB we will have Garmin Shaugs Sparks Varner and Sharp. None of these players has had enough carries for us to truly know what they have. Sharp, however, seems to be a different breed than the others. This young man has the look of a RB, he's got Hershal Walker type traps and very broad shoulders. He was close to getting his shirt pulled in fall camp but didn't more so because they had alot of backs without him than because he wasn't good enough. We still could use a 230lb power back to pound the rock though.

-At QB we have two highly recruited rfr and an athletic rather unknown fr. These guys need to be developed. It really hurt to lose Riddle, I thought he could have been something special.

-At FB we have a super athletic fr that can block run and catch.

-Who knows what we have at TE they don't see the ball. They can block but we don't spend a whole lot of time in jumbo sets unless we're at the goal line.

    Defense.

-The DL has a few really talented young players. Edwards is a monster who will get better and more consistent. Cheatom has been pretty good in spots but is still pretty green. Cary came into camp injured and from what I hear was the top candidate for getting his shirt pulled before his injury. Carrothers is a guy I really like, he has a great motor and attitude.

-At LB there are some promising young talents that need to get experience and be developed. Rich Labat Wharton Ratelle Norberg Idowu and Beard are all very athletic and big players that are legit D1 talents. This could form a very good LB corps if developed properly.

-The secondary has two young stud safeties in Kuksa and Reyes. CB is a huge weakness on this team Brown has digressed as the season has gone on and other than him maybe Konowalski can be a good player but the other CBs just aren't good.

So for an incoming coach it's not as if there is nothing to work with. There are weaknesses obviously, which would need to be addressed, but there is plenty of talent in the younger players. Enough to snag a really good coach? We'll see I guess.

By that description 3 of the 5 lineman are special and another really talented, the receivers are amazing, the running back is equal to Hershal Walker, the fullback is an athletic freak, and the qb are highly recruited. Sounds like the best offense ever

  9. He's doing a hell of a job and based in the incredible defensive turn around over the last 2 weeks, he must sign an extension before other schools try to steal him away.

  10. If you look at years past I think you can find plenty of examples of games where Big Sky teams had good and bad defensive performances.

As someone mentioned earlier, FU is kind of the defensive exception to the conference. There is nothing I have seen from a MVFC team other than FU that makes me think their defenses are any better than anything I have seen in the Big Sky.

No matter how you shake it, a different style of game is played in the Big Sky vs the Missouri Valley. Big Sky throws a lot. MVFC pounds the ball. The MVFC teams are used to physical play. I'm not saying it's right or wrong or better or worse - but it's just different. But late season games are typically won on the ground.

    2012 CONFERNCE STATS

    SCORING DEFENSE

    Big Sky - 246 (31 ppg)

    MVC - 171 (21 ppg)

2013 CONFERENCE STATS (Ok it's only 1 game)

    SCORING DEFENSE

    Big - 27.5

    MVC - 19.5

  11. Would the Bison fans quit reading the MVFC press notes about how much defense they play? You guys keep spreading that "group-think" crap around and it isn't supported by any facts. The MV defenses are no better than any other top conference (minus NDSU). Look at the OOC scores and past playoff scores and you will see the results. Many MV teams got lit up bigtime in the first three weeks of OOC play.

The difference is the offense's in the MV play run first, close to the vest type of style's which leads to lower scores. Therefore, the scores drop dramatically once conference play begins.

Their defenses are good solid defenses but no better on average than any other conference's, like Big Sky or CAA.

Ask Sam Houston about Big Sky defenses. The entire conference is built on winning during the regular season. When the playoffs come around, teams from other conferences run the ball with relative ease. I think Montana and Poly are built for the playoffs. Montana State gets the ball run down their throat and good defenses shut them down, especially when weather is a factor since they play outdoors

  12. As a Bison fan I can honestly say I'm surprised how far the team has fallen. As an observer, it all starts with defense and that seems to be the theme throughout the Big Sky. You need to figure out how to stop Big Sky offenses because its really really ugly.

I wouldn't blame Mussman entirely for the bad defense. How about the defensive coaches? You have some talent. They are not developing players

  13. I will congratulate them on something as soon as they acknowledge that hockey is a legitimate college sport. I think there is a better chance of that region below our feet reaching 32F.

Yes it's a legitimate college sport. Just one that ESPN.com has decided doesn't deserve it's own page. :) JK but in all seriousness I knew we would be competitive and I actually thought we were going to win yet I'm still in shock from the finish. Damn, we're the lead story on Sportscenter. Crazy.

  14. Fire Haskol, save UND

As an outside observer, UND is the most talented team on the planet. He recruits great players but the team can't get er done? Whose fault is that? Duluth recruiting isnt in the same league on paper but they win when it matters? How would the Duluth coach do with the same players and facilities?

  15. I thought the SL was 2.0 right now...I guess you add St. Cloud and Augy and its NCC 2.1

Hey the NCC was pretty darn good in it's heyday. Best D2 conference on the planet. It's basically a new and improved NCC with more scholarships minus the real !@#!$ teams. Good games and good times. It would stay together longer than we would live.

  16. Gabe,

We couldn't afford a move to DI at the time NDSU moved up. That is why Kuppy et. al. held their ground. I don't think we were quite ready to do it when we did but our back was finally against the proverbial wall with the complete and utter collapse of the NCC.

I didn't even know that. It's been so long I forgot.

  17. Wow this is certainly getting interesting. As a Bison Fan I dont know what to think. My gut says UMKC knows something. It defies all logic. The wac is basically a glorified great west without the good programs. And the Denver move is even more peculiar.

Missouri Valley? Yeah obviously even without a few teams that would be an insane upgrade.

So many options. This could open up USD to go to the Big Sky. You could see all the Dakota schools go to the Big Sky and form a mega conference. You could see all 3 teams go to the Missouri Valley or maybe 2? Heck how about UND to join us in all sports, including football?

Now if you guys would have moved up to the FCS at the same time, we may not even be having this discussion and we would have the 5 core NCC teams that stood for decades in the same conference!

  18. Excuses for losing Darrel? Reality check people. Back to back national champions vs sub 500

It would be a blowout. This isn't the 90s. Its closer to the 80s. It would be like the sdsu vs usd game. A blowout and anticlimactic game that was supposed to resume competitive. Within a decade you guys will build your program up but right now the balance is way off. I want to see epic games. So do you. My perfect scenario would be a playoff match up.

Other sports we are fairly evenly matched and its competitive. Makes sense.
