  1. I was thinking the same thing and since the refs aren't calling the obstrution and hooking and holding I think the Sioux will and should check these guys relentless and hard. I would have Kaip or Fabian in Nodl's and gordon's kitchen all game long. It players like this that makes me miss Prpich.

At this point do we really have an effective checking line? (as in days of yore?)

  2. I love watching (or listening) to Duncan and Kozek score. They always seem to be such quick, lethal shots that the goalie never even sees. Great night for the boys. Bring on the SCSU

    You must have good ears.

  3. They filled both boxes in the Mad Town. Badgers still talkin' smack in the box. 3 in for BC, 2 for Badgers. It wasn't that good of a fight.

Dinks on the TV didn't replay the fight after I turned the TV on. I'm sure it's better for ratings for people to watch the refs trying to figure things out.

  4. PCM, Are you serious? I can't believe the WCHA League office thinks that it is the on ice Official's job to keep league parity. I don't ever remember a refs job being to keep league parity. How about have the coaches improve in their recruiting? I know they don't do that in the NHL.

I think that the officials are in a darned if you do, darned if you don't situation. Sheppard probably bitches at them if they call it consistent and if they call it situational. I'm guessing it probably matters who's complaining to the WCHA rather than if their complaint has merit.

  5. Miller has played 5/7 games this season. I think I think if I were the coach he might become a fixture in the line up. Oh course its easier to coach from the stand or in your livingroom.

I don't think you're going that far out on the limb there. Right now he's the team scoring leader when we really really needed someone to step up.

  6. If I had to guess, I'd say that Shep probably tells the officials to do one thing one week and when they do that he's ripping the ref because he got a complaint from The Don or someone.

  7. I'm offended! Pam Anderson is a classy woman...except for that PETA thing that she's involved with.

You're right about this group, though. Kickin' a** on the wild side!

Thread-related...I thought the students were outstanding this past weekend. The "suit up Hrkac" sign was ESPN classic!

    Don't ask don't tell, that's my philosophy.

  8. Toews didn't play up to his potential when he scored a hat trick?

Just because he has been held scoreless for a couple games shouldn't make people forget about his games previous to that.

    Wasn't that against Quinnipiac?

Speculating that the team might be better with different line combinations isn't an attack on the team.

  9. As much as I would love to see Johnny and TJ keep playing together, it may be time to split them up. They are both natural centers and their abilities are similar. It may be what is missing, TJ will make another line better rather than having one super line and three other so-so lines. I mean that with all due respect to the rest of the team.( You don't just get handed a scholarship to play hockey at one of the best programs in the country, so if you're on this team you've earned the right to be there.) Here is my line-up Porter-Toews-Duncan, they had some success last year. Watkins-Oshie-Kozek, I think Watkins' speed and skating ability would be better used out on the wing. TJ plays better in the center spot with his face-off skills and ability to distribute the puck. Kozek would benifit from this situation as well as I think he would have a few more scoring opportunities. Third line would be Fabian-Kaip-Zajac, already proven to be the gritty, hard nosed, hard working line, with Zajac giving them the option of scoring some hard fought goals down in front of the net. The fourth line has endless combinations. Use your imagination, but I think Bishop, Miller, and Martens have all showed they can work hard out there when they have a chance. There are six guys in the mix for playing time on that fourth line every weekend. It may be that we will see different combinations of players all year long on that fourth line (whether that is good or bad remains to be seen I guess). I still think Phil is the man between the pipes, however, I wouldn't have minded seeing Grieco in the net Friday late in the second, it really couldn't have hurt anything at that point. A couple more thoughts. I usually don't like to blame officials, however Don Adams should be cooking french fries at McDonalds, but I'm sure he'd find a way to _uck that up too. Lastly, if anyone thinks the clutching, tripping, spearing, and after-the-whistle crap is going to get any better this weekend in Mankato, they better wake up and smell the coffee now, cause it may be even worse.

IMO Duncan's playing up to his level, but I haven't seen TJ or Toews up to their huge potential. Playing around with the lines couldn't hurt. Of course maybe Hak didn't want to play around with the lines against Maine and Wisco.

Would TJ add scoring punch to a checking line? Create some havoc? Just a discussion point.

  10. Because there is more to running the WCHA than officiating?

I can't claim to know what McLeod does in his job outside of overseeing Greg Shepherd and, by assumption, all others who work for the WCHA.

I wonder how busy a job being comic-star of the WCHA would be if you allowed someone else to worry about what happens on ice.

  11. What they should do to help fill more seats is to handle the season tickets the way they handle the upperbowl student tickets. This way Season ticket holders would be able to pick up their tickets 10-14 days before the game, and then if they do not pick up their tickets by the Thurday before the game people could then buy those tickets Friday before the game. This way you can help out those people you cant afford the season tickets, but would like better seats then those in the upper corners. This way you can get recent graduates who are still living in the area that will actually cheer and be loud for their team. And this will also benefit the damn REA managers that only care about money (because they sure dont give a hoot about the team or the students) since they can make more of it.

We love have students there, We were students our selves. But where do you think the money comes from to have a great program like that? (The season ticket holders).

The student line back when I went to school was that "we should ________ because part of the money for the Winter sports/Englestad arena was a student fee charge."

  12. The Sioux give up 5 second period goals in one of the ugliest 20:00 of hockey I've ever seen...and the refs were at fault? ???

I'm on record to say that the refs had a bad game but they sure didn't make the team quit skating and otherwise stop playing their game.

With all their faults IMO the refs didn't lose either game for us. And believe me, I'd tell you if I thought they did.

  13. Do we really need to have the same discussion about the difference in atmosphere between the new Ralph and the old Ralph? All of the arguments are in past threads. It will never be the same as the old Ralph. But if you have thoughts about ways to improve things, please bring them up.

When we moved into the old Englestad from the old Barn the atmosphere wasn't like it used to be. Plus I would say that the atmosphere in the 90's wasn't as good as it was in the early 80's. (May the Farce be with you).

If you want my suggestion, teach the guys running the PA (and the band) to shut the eff up when the crowd starts to get into it.

Case in point, Friday period 2 and the fans are getting on Adam. (For your information I bought my ticket so I could get on the refs (at appropriate times of course and in an appropriate manner)). Ding Dong on the PA went into some long-winded sales pitch that was absolutely worthless. Let the fans get into the game.

Now that I'm rolling I'm going to get on the one thing that's pissed me off for years. The last real game at the Ralph. The students, God Bless them, started a Hobey Baker chant for Jeff Panzer. After the cheer started the band got up and drowned it out. I still wished I went over and beat the band director to a pulp.

The PA and the band need to shut up when the fans start getting into the game.

Next time I'll tell you what I really think.

  14. I agree with RedWing: The reason why every referee is crappy is because that's how the guy at the top wants it called. By the way IMO Bruce McCloud is a lightweight and Greg Sheppard calls the shots in the WCHA. I don't have any inside info on that, just my impression from watching him speak.

  15. Hey, I don't post much here but, I read all the time. I'm from Williston and have gone to sioux games for the last five years and went to the regionals last year. And I thought that it would be a sell out easy since were playin Maine but I saw a lot of empty seats and the student section wasent evan full. The crowd was quiet for most of the game but the sioux play had to do a lot with that. And I know that since Grand Forks is not too big that we won't get a sell out every night but you would think there would be more people then they were. Is attendance a problem or is it not that big of a deal???

I would say that in general the tickets for sale are sold. (I think there's a few out there).

Generally except for the corners in the upper section it's pretty full. Are those student seats or are they general admission?

We've been #2 in attendance since the Ralph opened so I don't see a problem. Wisconsin generally beats us but they seat quite a few more.

Selling that many tickets in a town the size of GF is pretty good in my opinion.
