  1. A quote from my article:

North Dakota will honor Connor Gaarder, Mark MacMillan, Nick Mattson, Brendan O'Donnell, Andrew Panzerella, Michael Parks, and Stephane Pattyn during Saturday’s Senior Night celebration. The 2015 senior class has amassed a combined record of 95-46-16 (.656) with three straight trips to the NCAA tournament. By comparison, the winningest class under Dave Hakstol was the 2011 class (forwards Matt Frattin, Evan Trupp, Brad Malone, and Brent Davidson and defensemen Chay Genoway, Jake Marto, and Derrick LaPoint), who went 109-48-16 (.676) during their time at UND.

Beginning with the incoming freshman class of 2002, every four-year player to wear the Green and White has collected 100 career victories.

This year's group needs five more wins to reach that milestone, and it starts this weekend.

    Dave

so 3/4 in the regular season; 4/4 in the NCHC playoffs and 4/4 in the NCAA's.  That comes to 106 wins.

  2. Perhaps Mr. Carlson phrased it wrongly or perhaps the University was actually going to take irrevocable action prior to any decision by the legislature.

I don't mind that he pointed out that it's still the law of the state and they need to comply with it. Certainly they can plan for things that seem likely but they can't take action. After all the horse may learn to sing.

  3. The Herald article has been updated to include quotes from Grant Shaft: http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/214094/group/homepage/

I'm kind of impressed with Shaft's candor.

Grant Shaft who was in charge of the committee to keep the name who had one organizational committee meeting. As soon as the petition effort on the Spirit Lake reservation took off he disbanded his committee and made a motion to terminate the Sioux name with a year and a half left in our settlement period. His stated purpose was that the Summit league was considering bringing us in, but that wasn't a good fit for us and we didn't even wind up completing the application process.

So please, don't mention "Shaft" and "candor" in the same sentence.

  4. I do understand that the SBoHE has to follow state law. My point, whether I am right of wrong, is that the legislature stepped over constitutional lines in making their law requiring UND be the Fighting Sioux.

Will they now pass a law saying that the presidents of the institutions now report to them? What other laws can they make taking power away from the SBoHE?

Al saw an avenue to grab power and he took it. The AG should have shut it down, the governor shouldn't have signed it, but we are now in this mess and now Al is mad because he got a pie in his face.

They can't pass a law requiring a state agency report to them. After all the constitution says other agencies report to the Governor.

If you look at the legislative history it makes a bit more sense. Wild Bill Langer wanted to interfere in the personnel process on NDSU. The people took the governor out of the equation except I suppose for his responsibilities in the legislative process.

  5. I don't agree that the SBoHE is a state agency. They are essentially an independent branch of the government. And I still contend that the legislature overstepped their bounds. From the ND constitution....

That doesn't mean that they don't have to follow state law. Suppose a University staff member gets caught stealing from one of the institution. Do they go to the state pen or to one that's run by the NDUS?

  6. The law says the name is "Fighting Sioux".

Planning for a transition to a different moniker isn't illegal. Actions to implement the plan are, specifically, actually changing the moniker probably. Then again, what's the punishment for breaking that law?

I believe they could be required to pay back any money spent illegally. I'm not sure on the specific mechanism.

Regarding the "constitutional crisis." While the Board of Higher Education undoubtedly has administrative control they do have to follow state law the same as any other state agency.

As to my own opinion I'm glad that the state legislature acted on respecting the wishes of the people of North Dakota as well as the wishes of the Spirit Lake tribe. I don't think there was a single issue that generated as much support this spring as that.

Undoubtedly it was too little too late, but it was worth a try.

  7. In another thread, I had suggested that if the management of the REA took over the Alerus, large cost savings would be possible.

Yesterday, from the Columbus Dispatch, there was a story on Schottenstein Center (OSU's arena) and Nationwide Arena (Columbus Blue Jacket's arena) were able to save $1 miilion annually by consolidating management:

OSU management of both Schottenstein and Nationwide saves $1 million annually

I think that would be a very beneficial move. The problem is that you would have to get the city leaders to butt out because they have been part of the problem.

The other thing is that the Alerus Gang has a big problem with the Ralph. They often complain that their poor results are because of the Ralph competing with them.

  8. Trying to get actual information is getting tougher all the time. These websites were offered on here to educate voters:

    speakupforyourlibrary.com

    or

    http://sayanythingbl.../tag/gflibrary/

Both are terrible sources of information. Bill O'Reilly or Rachel Maddow. All opinion. To get any information, you need to read between the lines. I guess this is why teachers were so disapproving of internet sources.

    Ouch. :0

  9. Thank you for your input and for proving my point. The signs were designed to create conversation anti and pro I believe, just as you and I are doing now. Sometimes you need to think outside the box to be creative and it's my opinion they did just that while still getting their point across in a unique way.

So the entire point of the campaign is to get the public to support a book by JRR Tolkien and the collected works of Theodore Geisel? Wouldn't that take about a foot of shelf space.

I have two copies of The Hobbit. I could donate one and help save the public 25 million dollars if it would help.

  10. Pretty sure it's a 30 year bond for the Alerus.

They had refinanced at one time. The new bonds are scheduled to be paid off at 2029, but according to figures the Herald Reporter put out the 3/4 percent tax would raise enough money to pay it off by 2019.

  11. I guess my question is when is the sunset on the Alerus Center sales tax? Wasn't that a 20-year deal? With the excess sales tax collected in many years, they should have been able to pay that off early, unless they are using those funds for some other reason that the voters didn't have a chance to approve. Nevertheless, why can't the City practice the same budgeting that it's citizens do, and wait until they pay off one thing before they take out a loan on another, especially when nothing is going to fall apart in the meantime. If you keep increasing the sales tax before any sunset happens, you run the risk of losing some business from outlying areas.

They said it would go away when the bonds were paid off. The Alerus gang seems to be spending every nickel that they can to delay that eventuality as long as possible.

Since the subject is the library though, maybe someone hear knows. In 1969 a bond issue was approved using property taxes to pay off the current library. Is it true that when the bonds were paid off the city council spent those mills on other projects meaning that we're still paying the old library tax?

  12. Also, if Kristo leaves it's not because he stopped attending classes. You put the cart in front of the horse. If Kristo has stopped attending classes, it's because he's already decided to leave.

OR maybe his convalescence got him so far behind in school that moving on looked more doable than getting those grades back up.

  13. I'm 10 minutes in so far, and there have already been two stupid and/or biased questions.

WTF was the question about regretting BC not being in. That was some guy from the Pipeline up in Canada.

    Dumbest question ever.

  14. Thank you!!! You just made me laugh out loud. My almost 15 yr old dog had to be put down today and I've been doing a lot of crying. A good laugh was sorely needed!!!

That really sucks. I hope this weekend helps take your mind off of losing your friend.

  15. Cool my I phone has a purpose now :D

Schlossman's instant chat works nicely as well. I'd also have a window on Sioux Sports because I think they limit the ability for the press box to see replays. It's nice to be able to look on SS and find out what happened on a disputed goal or penalty.

If I wasn't going to be at a viewing party I'd be on one or the other.
