  1. I've followed some the youth levels and to see what those bantam teams are doing from Grand Forks is scary. Back when I played there was a North and a South Grand Forks in the youth levels. Guess I'm not sure why they got away from that? They played with the same group from 6th grade on up through high school. I guess the only time North and South kids played together was Stallions if they didn't make their respective high school teams.

In Fargo are they splitting up Davies and South kids on Bantam teams? How about the angels? Anybody got an idea if there is hope for a Shanley high school team again?

Now imagine if the 5 kids from Central played Bantams this year....2 forwards and 3 D added to those two teams.

I don't think they split up the Fargo kids..put them all together for bantams. Not sure about Shanley getting a team. And If you want to even go further down the pipeline the Fargo Squirt A teams cancelled all their games against GF Squirt A teams this year.

  2. Just wondering.

How many of those kids in Grand Forks go to schools *like* Shattuck...or into developmental junior league programs, thus bypassing HS hockey...as compared to kids from other parts of Nodak...Fargo, Bismarck, Minot?

I guess what I am wondering is...does GF hockey get depleted more from these kinds of programs than other towns/cities in Nodak?

I think Fargo has more kids than GF...at least 4 of the Davies or South kids are in Kansas City (think that's it) and another two are in Omaha..one on the major team and one on the minor team

GF has 3 from RR and 1 from Central.....this is just from memory but it gives you an idea. I don't know about Bismarck, Mandan, Minot Grafton Etc. Jade Miller could have gone to the USHL last year but chose to stay for his senior season.

  3. I wouldn't say dominating, but from the couple tourneys I've seen my little cousin in, West Fargo and Minot have been quite good.

Uh no their not...In the bantam level the 2 GF teams are hands down the best....one of them is even 5 times better than the other. And that's with 5 bantams that played for Central this year. Add them to the list and it's terrible.

On the Pee Wee level you can add in a Fargo team and that's it...again no competition.

Personal opinion only but GF should make one AA team for bantam and pee wee and head to MN and leave the other A team to play in ND...now fire away : )

  4. Didn't USA Hockey decide that they only wanted 1 affiliate in town? They didn't want to keep dealing with multiple groups in different towns. Being affiliated with USA Hockey is pretty important. I'm pretty sure that's why they put all of hockey under the Park Board.

It had nothing to do with the Blues/Supras...that just happened 2 years ago now. The reason they shut the doors was because of USA Hockey rules and couldn't get insurance. It's an ok thing though...the Blues had 1 team per age and the Supras had 2 teams, not enough for everyone.

RR is down this year and The west just has some players but like someone said if Christian and Benson were there it would have been different but that's all over....Fargo's missing Mari and at least 4-5 others. Bismarck will be hard to beat as they've got a Mandan kid and Dickinson kid they imported plus maybe 8 seniors. Kids are leaving. Hard to believe Johnson lasted until his senior year.

  5. NDSU has 22 kids from North Dakota and 5 from South Dakota

UND has 13 kids from North Dakota and 1 from South Dakota

It's funny to read about this as my son and I just had this conversation and also looked at the rosters on the website to see the ND kids. I'm curious though...how many of the ND kids actually play at each school?

  6. As for the "team full of criminals" I was disappointed with the petition crap. It was stupid, but only a misdemeanor. I got in more trouble than that when I was a senior in high school but my scholarship to a much bigger university than anything in the Dakota's wasn't pulled. That doesn't excuse the behavior by any means, and players were suspended depending on their role/involvement. Now, if you are going to try and talk about Travis Beck.... he did absolutely nothing other than defend himself and would have beaten the fleeing/resisting charge but would have had to go to trial and disrupt the season a bit so he pled guilty and moved on. Beck missed almost all of the summer workout as he was suspended for most of it and spent the time at home helping his dad farm. The rest of the team worked out every week except for the 4th of July week. So even though he didn't miss any game time he did miss a ton of valuable strength/training time....which is about the amount of punishment he deserved for what he did/admitted guilt of (resisting).

Well now Tjamz...your personal story was a great read for a Monday morning!! Gave me a belly laugh for a while. Moral of the story for me....when you think you've got it bad....someone always has it worse. Good luck with your kid, career and maybe the wife.

  7. Hi. New here so I didn't want to start a new thread for this.

There's some rumors going around Buffalo that Dave Hakstol might be assistant coach under Rolston for the Sabres.

Any news here? Would he be a good fit?

Ohhh Boy....way to start a fire storm on yur first post. And who thought the summer rumors would be boring?

  8. There is going to be a lot more new home construction in Grand Forks in the next few years, and barring a big shift in the boundaries it will only make the disparity between the two high schools even more glaring. You can't continue to have the two mega-elementary schools in town (soon three) completely in the RR district, as that is a big part of the problem.

My kids go to Kelly. I completely understand that it wouldn't necessarily be popular at first to switch from a north-Central/south-RR split to an east-Central/west-RR split, but I don't see how else you can effect significant change. I'm sure the plan now is to simply shift the boundary a few blocks south in an attempt to compensate for all the new construction in the south end. As we've seen over the past few decades, that just doesn't work if fairness is the goal.

The big unknown to me is whether the large disparity in extra-curricular achievement is also seen in academic achievement. I suppose people can make the argument that if it's only sports where one sees a big achievement gap, it's not enough of a reason to make a radical change. But if a similar disparity is seen in test scores, college attendance, etc., that makes for a far more compelling argument, and "tradition" as a reason to keep the status quo no longer carries much weight.

True to form GF will do nothing. Unlike Fargo...GF can not make the hard decisions. Look at the $500,000 study on the elementary schools an then leave that the same. As much as I dislike Fargo I admire that they make the hard decision and let it be. GF is to worried about the neighbors and if they'll be re-elected to the board. RR will continue to dominate this town. In the next few years Central will make it interesting though but as this person said....they growth is going south and into RR district. GF should make boundries but won't because the mucky mucks want it left status quo.

  9. I don't have time to follow the local sports scene. I have a lot of stuff going on, plus work. I went to a couple ND High School Hockey games this season, I am tickled pink that we have some solid ND players coming this season

I was kidding...it's nice to see local kids playing a variety of sports at the collegiate level. Not just UND and not just hockey. Just look at Taylor Steen playing at Indiana St for baseball..perfect example.

  10. It's 11 days ago and if it was on NBCSN or on a NHL.COM web page it was easy to miss. But thanks for the heads up though. I appreciate it though thanks. To be honest with you, I rarely read the local newspaper unless it's during the college hockey season.

Come on Goon...gotta follow the local Grand Forks sports now that you're a part of the reporter profession. Lots of good local kids going to UND for a variety of sports.

  11. US History and Social Studies are generally taught in the 8th grade. Lack of knowledge is no excuse for three high school freshmen's poor choice of white out costumes. It's in the hands of their parents and the school now. It's too bad for for them and the community that the picture went viral. I hope with all my soul that their identities do not become public!!!

I agree with Siouxperfan7, Please take your out of context political bashing elsewhere. The majority of your discussion doesn't belong in this thread. Start another one if you want to continue your mutual bashing. Thanks.

My son is in the 8th grade and I had to explain what all of this means. Also to the person above every town has the haves and have nots...it doesn't matter where you live...in house..in an apt. or in a trailer court

  12. These kids are in 9th grade...they made a stupid mistake and it's being dealt with. If this is the worst thing these kids ever do then the parents have done a wonderful job. I know these three kids on a personal level and all three are good kids. They made a mistake just like all of us have done..maybe a bigger mistake but a mistake none the less.

  13. Great they put fan feast on the same weekend that is the ND duck opener.

And..not that it's a big deal but majority of the middle school kids will be at church group..Castaway...at least the attendance will be reasonable with these other things going on.
