  1. NCAA to rename college football subdivisions Posted 8/3/2006 9:59 PM ET E-mail | Save | Print | Reprints & Permissions | Subscribe to stories like this By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY The NCAA is doing a little re-labeling, eliminating the Division I-A and I-AA tags that officially separate college football's major and more modest programs. Acknowledging frustration that the classification often brands an entire university as big-time or non-big-time, the association's Division I Board of Directors moved Thursday to rename the subdivisions. Beginning in December, they'll be known by their respective postseason formats. What now are I-A programs
  2. NIT's postseason field cut to 32 teams Posted 8/1/2006 7:14 PM ET E-mail | Save | Print | Reprints & Permissions | Subscribe to stories like this By Steve Wieberg and Thomas O'Toole, USA TODAY The NCAA continued its makeover of college basketball's National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday, trimming the postseason field from 40 teams to what it said is a more workable 32. "It is more logical in terms of structure, easier to follow for fans and participants, more workable in bracketing ... and it also eases the burden on travel," said C.M. Newton, a longtime basketball coach and athletics administrator who heads the six-man NIT committee that made the decision. Said Greg Shaheen, an NCAA vice president who has overseen the NIT since the association bought the event a year ago, "This just makes it a better fit." The new format
  3. I am very interested in what this topic is about, but I can't find what you're talking about in that article. Would you mind helping me out here. Where did I miss the rest of the article that talks about the coaches urging the NCAA. I find it particularly interesting especially since the NCAA just cut the NIT from 40 to 32 teams. I'll get you a link to that article.
  4. This is a great career move. He'll get good experience as the DC that he would have a chance at getting for many years at UND.

    Northern Iowa?

Bison Pride, After everything I've read about the UND-UNI game, there is only one guy that seems to think this could happen. And like tnt, I think UND has lost too much on defense to keep up with a high-octain offense like UNI's. The Panther defense has a few new guys and will have someting to prove to their Gateway mates that have put the target on their back this year. Plus, with a game at ISU two weeks later there is no way that the UNI coaching staff is going to let a former NCC member and current D2 team come into the UNI-Dome and get a win that would do major damage to the Panther play-off chances. Think about it, a loss to a D2 and a D1 team, they would have to run the table in the Gateway more than likely or not make the play-offs.

    Northern Iowa?

I swear to god I thought this thread was about the UND vs UNI game. Finally someone who wants to talk about that game. Thanks tnt! The only problem is that UND's team from last year is not play this year and UNI is better this year than last year. UNI's O-Line is huge and experienced. Their QB is wily and RB is coming back. Their defensive unit will have a few new starters, but will have an in-state road game against Drake to get the butterflies out. Good luck to the Sioux, but I think this is about a 56-17 game.

    Northern Iowa?

Finally, someone who understands what the Sioux are up against. Some of you guys may want to go over and read posts on Panter Nation to get a feel for what's going on over in Purpleville. There is a guy over there that has really tried to make some strong points for UND and for D2 teams in general and he has been pounded mercifully, and he's a Panther guy from what I can tell and makes some good points, but he effrots fall on deaf ears.

    Northern Iowa?

This means absolutely nothing. Nice try though.
  9. The roof has been repaired several time, but not replaced and is an air supported system. Their is no plan to change that. UNI has just finished a new basketball arena so the basketball team will only play in the UNI-Dome when teams like Iowa and ISU come to town.
  10. But you won't know unless you ask. It might be an ideology for the Native American Indians, but what is the motivation of the NCAA?
  11. Why is the use of American Indian people as mascots and symbols offensive? The continued use of American Indian people as mascots, logos, and symbols is wrong. It denies a race of people the basic right of respect. By tolerating the use of demeaning stereotypes, we desensitize and objectify people. When using a race of people as nothing more than mascots and symbols, we are teaching the next generation of non-Indian children that it is okay to participate in culturally abusive behavior. There is no such thing as a basic right of repect. Respest is earned. How do they see that UND is only using a race of people as nothing more than mascots and symbols when the University has a degree program based on Native American Studies, allows Native American students admission to the university with other non-native American students, that's called intergration I believe and promotes social interaction. When you take a look at the big picture of the answer given to the question above you see how really baseless it is. And it shows that Native Americans that support group think like this actually disrepectful of the non-Indian educational system that they use to better their own causes and have educated generations of non-Indian students to not participate in cultural abusive behavior, but to embrase and interact with those who are differant from us. My choices for names: #1 Fighting Sioux #2 University of North Dakota (no nickname) #3 Norsemen I think it is time that Myles Brand and the NCAA disclose how much money Native Americans have contributed to the NCAA coffers on behave of this endeavor. Actually, I think there may be basis for a reverse discrimination case here.
  12. Oh ye of little faith. You know it is going to happen and moves like Glas' is a tell tale sign.
  13. What about Chris Davis Assistant Coach at Drake University (No relationship to HC Dr. Tom Davis). I think He would be a great fit as UND moves to D1 status. He has recuited D1 players and coached at the D2 and D1 level with much success. Here is his Bio from the Drake website. Assistant Coach Chris Davis Chris Davis joined the Drake coaching staff in 2000 and has developed into a key figure in the success of Bulldog basketball. "Chris has done a good job for me in helping to ease my transition to Drake," said Drake head coach Tom Davis. "He is highly respected in the Missouri Valley Conference and I look forward to working with him. He is a proven recruiter and understands the mission of Drake University." Davis, 43, a native of Jackson, Mich., is a veteran collegiate assistant. Prior to his arrival at Drake, he served as assistant basketball coach at Western Michigan, coordinating recruiting for the Broncos. During his tenure there he helped the Broncos win the Mid-American Conference regular season championship in 1997-98 (21-7 record) and advance to the second round of the 1998 NCAA Tournament where the Broncos lost to eventual Final Four participant Stanford. In 1995-96, Davis helped guide Western Michigan to a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference. During his five seasons on the Western Michigan staff, the Broncos knocked off national powers Michigan (twice), Clemson and North Carolina-Charlotte. Davis also served as an assistant coach at Mid-American Conference rival Kent State from 1989-1995, helping Kent State finish runner-up in the Mid-American Conference in 1989-90 while participating in the 1990 NIT. He was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Grand Valley State University from 1987-89. While at Grand Valley State, the Lakers compiled a 40-18 record and twice finished second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. At Drake, Davis
  14. Waterloo Courier: SPORTS Friday, April 14, 2006 12:13 PM CDT Glas applies for UNI post GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) -- University of North Dakota men's basketball coach Rich Glas has formally applied for an assistant position at Northern Iowa. If he gets the job, it will reunite the 18-year Fighting Sioux coach with his former player and top assistant -- Northern Iowa head coach Ben Jacobson. "I feel I needed to look at this opportunity at this point and time in my career," Glas said. "If offered the job, I'll have to make a quick decision." The application deadline for the position is Tuesday. Jacobson recently became the Northern Iowa coach, replacing Greg McDermott -- another former Sioux assistant under Glas -- who last month accepted the Iowa State head coaching position. Glas is the winningest coach in UND history, with 335 wins.
  15. Saw this post on the D2Football Board. Sounds like the UND Fighting Sioux are going to announce their plans to go NCAA Division I in May. Coaches are trying, and have been asked to keep it quiet but it is tough when you are out recruiting players who have DI potential. It appears UND and NDSU will then go into the Big Sky Conference. UND has been hurt the worst by the rivalry split. Sounds like from UND coaches, what really forced UND's hand was NDSU beating Wisconsin in men's basketball. My question is, does this mean that the Big Sky has made an offer to UND and that is why there ready to disclose? I don't understand the attachment to NDSU, that puts 11 teams in the Big Sky, does this leave room for SDSU to be the 12th team in the BSC? Once UND commits, how long before USD and others from the NCC follow? Could you see the BSC look like this? WEST: Sacramento St., Portland St., Weber St., Eastern Wa., N. Arizona, S. Utah, Cal-Poly, UC-Davis EAST: Idaho St., Montana, Montana St., UNC, UND, NDSU, USD, SDSU 7 conference games, 2 cross over games, 2 non-cons plus a CC.
