  1. I will be the first to admit that I'm not a great NDSU football mind.

Judging by MplsBison's list, apparently I'm not either.

What may be most interesting about this thread is the way the two staffs grade rb's. Chappell (sp.) was not offerred by SU and has turned out great for you guys; Solum was not offerred by us but looks to a good player for you as well. Now Horner was apparently not offered by UND, but was high on NDSU's list. I guess you just have to recruit who you think best fits your system.

  2. Let's see. Last year NDSU didn't recruit Solum for runningback and this year they recruited Horner for runningback. Since Horner couldn't beat out Solum for runningback at Fargo South a year ago and the fact that they now need Horner for runningback at NDSU probably says more about the depth or quality of NDSU at that position now. He would have a lot better chance at making the field at NDSU then he would have had at UND with our runningback situation the way it is. It was a real long shot even if we had offered Horner that he would of come here anyway. Getting a kid from a Fargo South team coached by Feeney is slim.

Without knowing the details of the rb situation at UND, I would have to say he would have a much better chance at seeing the field earlier there than at NDSU. Horner will more than likely be 5th on the depth chart coming out of his redshirt freshman year, behind Paschall, Blincoe, McNorton, and Voigtlander.

  3. McNorton does have very good credentials. However, it seems as though NDSU has recruited a number of Texans the past few years, but most haven't seemed to pan out for whatever reason. It would seem that the odds of actually retaining a kid from Texas or Florida or California or wherever, with no previous connection to North Dakota and our climate, probably isn't the best.

I don't think attrition from the state of Texas has been any more pronounced than from any other state. The only one I can think of is Champ.

  4. I doubt that this transition will have any effect on their respective eligibility.

I don't remember the details, but NDSU OL Justin Monson lost a year of eligibility because of the transition, and SDSU had an OL that lost a year and ended up transferring to play for you guys; can't remember his name. Like I said, I don't know the details of those two cases but I would actually be surprised if Trenbreath did not lose his last year.

  5. Do you think Central Michigan just had a really bad day against NDSU, or was the MAC just that bad this year? It seems hard to believe that SDSU and Cal Poly may have been better than anyone in the MAC.

I think it's a combination of a few things. NDSU played really well that day, and I can only presume that CMU did not play well. Also, the Bison were 100% completely healthy, which was not the case at the end of the season. I know that sounds like an excuse and every football team is usually going thru the injury bug at the end of the season, but it seemed like the Bison avoided that in 06. Also, NDSU has seemingly struggled the two times we've played in SLO, and I don't think we've beaten the Jacks in Brooking this millenium (funny, huh).

  6. I guess what I am saying is why do they have to guarantee anyone anything?

The current system doesn't guarantee anything to anyone the way it is.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in IAA (FCS) postseason play conferences championships mean little. It is the top rated teams (some sort of poll - no real autobids) that get into the playoffs?

Why does there have to be this notion of "autobids." Because like you said earlier, a strong team could just transfer to that weak "autobid" conference and make the playoffs every year. (NSIC in D2 :) )

I think conferences are/should be just schedule alliances which gives its top member "bragging" / title rights: Conference Champs.

Actually, there are eight autobids in FCS. They go the champions of the following conferences:

    Southern

    Big Sky

    Southland

    CAA

    Gateway

    OVC

    MEAC

    Patriot

The eight at-large are selected by a committee and is supposedly based on the GPI, which (I think) is a BCS-style formula that takes into account polls and computer rankings.

  7. [i understand that to a point. I would hope we would follow similar path as NDSU and play up, schedule 1A teams and generate the revenue that way. I wonder how much Montana makes for home game vs a Div 2 compared to the exposure and 300,000 NDSU will make once again at Minnesota...?

I would think Montana is in the unique situation (for FCS schools) that they can probably make almost as much playing a DII at home as they can playing a guarantee game. They did play Iowa last year (don't know what the guarantee was) so they aren't totally immune to playing FBS teams.

  8. I sould have been more clear to make my point...

I would hope our future (UND) after the big move,we would not have to resort to playing any Div 2 oppents. I can understand during transition it will be difficult to schedule, however I would hope that we would eventually play a 12 game schedule with complete FCS (1AA) or a FBS (1A) games.

I find it alarming that Montana (est program / conference) could only schedule 11 games against some weak FCS (1AA), their conference oppents and then still have a need to fill with a sub par Div 2 oppentor 50,000......?

I am hoping this is not the future landscap for UND and it's Big Move.

The problem is not filling out a schedule with DI opponents. It's filling out a schedule with DI opponents and still maintaining a profitable athletic department. Montana apparently refuses to play anyone on the road, and a DII opponent will come to Montana cheaper than a FCS opponent would. They'll sell the place out no matter who they play, so I guess you can't really blame them.

  9. Just to let everyone know, there is going to be a huge announcement in the next couple of days dealing with our current administration. Be ready for some NDSU fans to come on this board and give a lot of grief on the state of UND. Might want to stay away for awhile unless you want to argue with some Bison fans. My opinion- what's happening is ultimately best for UND.

I seriously hope no NDSU fan would be stupid enough to comment on the abrupt departure of an AD.

  10. Dahl is the fourth-string, or backup-backup-backup, safety is he not?

Uh, no. Believe it or not, many football teams utilize 2 safeties on the field at the same time. The Giants kept 4 safeties (even though Dahl is listed as CB on their roster I'm pretty sure he'll play safety). So he's not a 4th string safety.

  11. Realizing that his departure from the BCS school wasn't by his own choice, this guy did it at a school transitioning to the (at that time) I-AA level. Maybe you're familiar with him?

I didn't click on the link but I presume you're talking about Craig Bohl, of course. But, IMO, that's a non-sequitur. The question isn't whether Tibesar would be successful in the transition, it's whether he would voluntarily leave KSU to become UND's head coach.

I didn't mean this to be smack, just looking for your guys' opinions.

  12. I've heard his name come up alot regarding the speculation that Lennon's gone. But I just don't see anybody leaving a DC position at a BCS school to become head coach at the FCS level. I assume he'd have to take a pay cut. I also think remaining at KSU would be a better career track to a good head coaching gig in FBS someday. Thoughts?

  13. About this whole matter. It says explicitly in the article the buildings were bought with private money at a cheaper price than if a building would have been built on campus. I personally think it is generally a good thing when government has limited power. This is a prime example. Thank God the legislature was stripped of some its powers in dealing with the NDUS. Running a large government entity is similar to running a business. Hire good people and let them make decisions.

  14. There has never been and is currently no ill will toward NDSU from any folks out west. I lived there the majority of my life and still have many friends and relatives back there. You hear the stupid anti-Fargo rhetoric very infrequently, but that never corellates into negative feelings toward NDSU.

  15. Wasn't sure where to post it, so I thought this was the best fitting thread. To good not to post though.

My nephew (a Sioux fan) who lives in Fargo gets invited over to a friends house to play for the first time. It was on a Friday night, so obviously, my nephew's wearing his Sioux gear. Turns out, the friend he's visiting is NDSU's Athletic Director, Gene Taylor's son. Nothing like supporting your team on enemy grounds!

    That's a pretty good story.

  16. The true reason why ndsu doesn't want this game lies in the fact that there is a strong possibility that the Sioux would win. NDSU's perceived rise in athletics over the last few years has come from claiming superiority over UND and without a game between the schools UND had no chance to refute those claims. If anything bison fans, coaches, and administrators should be thanking RT for choosing not to play as it no doubt saved a few of their careers by not having to endure a butt-kicking at the hands of the Sioux while they were transitioning (ex Amy Ruley). Not playing the bison aided their transition and robbed some excellent Sioux teams of the opportunity to beat the bison like so many teams before them. Taylor knows this and isn't too keen to put ndsu's faux success over the past few years to the test by playing the Sioux, even if it means looking like a whiny, chickensh*t little b**** in public.

That post, my friend, is pure comedic genius.
